There are two definitions of ego. This song is talking about ego as defined by Carl Jung's philosophy. The other definition is based on Freudian psychology. In short, Jung's uses "ego" to mean "the way we see ourselves". Ego is only one part of the Self. The other two are the Persona (the "face" we show other people) and the Shadow (the part of ourselves we hide from others. It's not necessarily our "bad" side, just our hidden side). Jungian theory states that all three parts must be in balance to have a healthy sense of self, especially the Shadow, which many people have a hard time embracing. BTS's rap line took turns tackling each aspect. RM did Persona, and Suga did Shadow. When you see the lyrics to those two songs it will help to know this theory.

EGO is the Outro by JHOPE, RM has the INTRO and SUGA interlude (solos). *This is from 'MAP OF THE SOUL: 7', the best-selling album IN THE WORLD in 2020* and the most acclaimed by critics, not only for the songs, for the concept and lyricism of the album. This album is based on the famous book by Psychoanalyst Carl Jung. He postulated about the archetypes called PERSONA (rm) EGO (jhope) SHADOW (suga) each one has their own solo that is part of the journey that this album is, to the unconscious and human conscious. I love that you reacted to this but I kinda wish you had watched the MV. There aren't as many solo outros in BTS albums, but it's pretty common for the intro of a BTS album to be a solo: V - "Singularity" Jimin - "Serendipity" Jungkook -"Euphoria" Jin - "Epiphany" J-Hope - "Boy Meets Evil" RM - "Persona" "What Am I to You?" "2 cool 4 Skool" Suga - "The Most Beautiful Moment in Life" "Nevermind" Map of the Soul: 7 is much like the Wings album in that all of the members have solos, but there are also many Unit songs too: RM/Suga, J-Hope/Jin/Jungkook, V/Jimin, The rap Line, The Vocal Line.

Dude you’re so right on how bts has different genres and make it good with meaningful lyrics. I can listen to only bts because no matter what music I’m in the mood for, they’ve got it. This whole idea of a musical group who all 7 members got their own things that’s different from another, makes bts so “holistic”.

Map of the Soul: 7 is their album from last year and it continues on with their Speak Yourself concept I believe. It starts with Persona, Shadow, and then Ego as they all relate to each other in terms of their theme when it comes to their lyrics for this album. RM has a song called "Persona" which started off their Map of the Soul: Persona album that came out before this one in 2019 (but it's also included in the MOTS 7 album). Suga's solo "Interlude: Shadow" started off MOTS 7 and you guys just watched Jhope's "Outro: Ego" which finished off this album. Each has an MV and if you went you could watch the lyric videos then watch the MVs so you guys won't have to worry about missing things because there's usually a lot of hidden messages within the sets. In my opinion, the whole album is a masterpiece! 💜

You want some more j-hope? If I tell you that a concert MARATHON will be streamed on their youtube channel (BANGTANTV) from the 17th... around 4 concerts back to back, and the one I was able to attend at the end which was the Speak Yourself Tour in São Paulo (Brazil). J-Hope OWNS Brazil!!!!

The beat is awesome but the lyrics has such a deep meaning i love j-hope i think he is amazing and still has not reached his full potential. BTS songs are on another level, they have something for everybody and they make you think and evoke emotions from you. 7 talented men who make great music and are always kind and humble.

I hope you can watch the BTS On Commentary Film: Dialogue so you can see how Map of the Soul: 7 album was recorded. An all black-choir helped record the background vocals for Ego and they worked on many of the tracks from the album along with UCLA marching band.

It is funny how when it came out i was "Do i even like this?" But one time it ended up playing while i was walking and listening to my general playlist on spotify. And i was blown away how good it made me feel. So now it is on my all walking playlists multiple times over cause everytime is on, my steps get faster and i it gives me such a burst of energy and good emotions. Now i love this song. ☺️

So when it comes to BTS albums it's like a full course meal. You get solo songs that fit the member that sings it. You get rap line songs which are the rappers only. You get vocal line songs, vocalist only. You get sub unit songs which could be just 2 or 3 members only. You get so much diversity be it genre, the vocal tones and the rap style. So listening to a BTS album is an experience. Especially Love Yourself: TEAR and MOTS 7.

Map of the soul concept is based on Jungian psychology. I don't know if you guys play games, but one easy way to help yourself understand the persona-shadow-ego concept is to play Shin megami tensei: Persona 4. Or watch the anime. In simple terms though: Persona is the outer self, the self you show the world, the one you want others to see. One person can have multiple personas. Even one for every person they meet. Getting too caught up in the front you're holding, can become an impostor syndrome, where you feel like you aren't really you, and are unable to identify with what you feel you should be. Shadow is the self you hide away, deny yourself being, don't want to identify with. It can be things other people tell you is bad, embarrassing, wrong. It doesn't have to be anything major, but it can be debilitating to learn of yourself, if you let yourself wallow in it. Ego is the self that doesn't know shadow, the one making every conscious decision. The one you know you are. Ego can get clouded and grow too big, and be your down-fall, if it's all you live by. Carl Jung's theory is, that Self, is a combination of all three, and to be of a healthy mind, is to become aware and accept everything about yourself. There's more to it, but this is the part i've understood. And BTS made three songs about it. :D
