We all know Jimin can sing, so the autotune isn't to hide anything, it's just an artistic choice and it makes the song really interesting IMO. I loved it 💜

jimin till these days is the member who most get hate comments, received death threats during tours, was mocked A LOT especially with people saying that he was "too feminine", so when he said "fuck all your opps" and "i won't stop even if they mock me" I FELT THAT IN MY SOUL

This song has taken my respect and appreciation for Jimin as an artist to the next level, he took a massive risk with this song and it has paid off. Not everyone likes it but that's life, no matter what you do in life it's impossible to please everyone so in the end just do you. And am glad Jimin did him and am here for all of it. What a master piece, the more i listen to it the more i love it.

70 year old Army here. The artistic choice of autotune is there for a reason. It represents what is going on with him and what was going on with him during Covid. The dark feelings of anger and burden of the hate and death threats he has been receiving over the years are also probably in the mix. I love this song and will support Jimin in all of his endeavors because I am ARMY!!!

The hate makes no sense to me. This song is so powerful. Also, yes the moon tattoos are real (so is the Nevermind on his ribs and the little 13 you can see briefly).

This song blew my mind! What a masterpiece! Jimin's vocals and dancing was absolutely amazing! I also love how we got a glimpse of his Nevermind tattoo and his moon tattoo on his back. I don't think my heart is ready for this album but I'm so excited!!!

This song is so powerful. It's his breakthrough and it's so beautiful to see his growth in all aspects. He's an incredible entertainer and he really sold the intention and message of the song with that performance. His vocals were so good and I love how he used the autotune for an artistic direction to further tell the story. I can't tell you how happy I was when I saw him dancing cause I really wanted him to dance at least on one song on the album and ofc he ATE and those supporting dancers killed it too🔥 shout-out to Sienna Lalau and The Lab who are part of the creation of the choreography. They have worked with the Tannies on many occasions💜 lastly I will never forgive him for what he did to me when he took his shirt off😂💀 I'm still trying to recover 😭

I had the same reaction - also caught off guard by the voice distortion but knew that it was an intentional artistic choice (and it made me appreciate hearing his raw voice even more in the second section). I felt the same about the repetitive chorus; like you said, a song doesn't really hook me if it seems to have just one line (I don't mean this song has only one line because it obviously doesn't). But when I re-watched again and again and read a range of comments and reactions, especially notes on the choreo, it all came together for me. It's a concept piece - not trying to be a banger that appeals to the masses, but more of a vehicle for Jimin to express raw/accumulated/pent-up frustrations. And the choreo is amazing - love being able to see all the details in the dance practice. Jimin's dancing is perfection. I love how in-depth they are in fleshing out their concepts and giving us thought-provoking cues ("they" meaning the members and entire production and choreo and visual team).

the auto tune and distorted reverb was use to make the aggressive forceful statement for all the haters, ''shut up'', ''fuxx off'' was done beautifully. i loved everything about this song and the video. the dancers were amazing, this was pure performance art at it's best. jimin did a wonderful job, the angel has become ferocious.

as a Jimin utted I was also thrown off by the autotune since I have literally never heard his voice with such distortion but I understood quickly why it was used and I’ve learned to enjoy it now. the only people hating on this song are the ones who enjoy hating on him for shits & giggles and he’s clearly sick and tired of them so what’s why he released this (among other reasons) and I’m extremely proud of him for doing so. I’m glad you enjoyed it!

For me, “Set Me Free pt2” is Jimin’s anthem. Right away the musical score made me think of a battle raging to represent Jimin’s internal battles with himself, the voice distortions represents his negative thoughts, all the haters, and those who used their words to diminish him. I remember in an interview (I forget which one) Jimin said he used to hate being alone because of all the thoughts in his head and they scared him. I presume these were negative thoughts, the demons that come at you when you’re alone and whisper in your ear that you’re not good enough, not handsome enough, you cant sing, you cant dance. I kept thinking of Jimin’s solo “Lie” where he sings “Caught in a lie, take me out of this hell, I can’t free myself from this pain, save the me who’s being punished” and they raise him over their heads and put down at about the middle of the song. In “Set Me Free pt2,” he is raised but at the end of the song and he emerges dressed in white; a new Jimin reborn. There were so many symbolisms and what appeared to be references to past BTS songs. I knew Jimin was creative but I had no idea how creative. This is a masterpiece and I think this is going to turn K-pop on it’s head. I saw many negative comments about the use of autotune and I have to admit I wasn’t keen on it at first but when it was explained to me that autotune is a common tool that artists use when they want to add layers and interest to a song, it clicked and I totally understood what Jimin was doing and I love it. He used the autotune for emphasis in certain places, it was a creative choice and he used it brilliantly to get his message across. I see this MV as a performance art masterpiece, simply stunning. I am in total awe of Jimin; he was the only member who debuted without having had vocal training. Jimin would tag along with Taehyung and Jungkook when they went for their lessons, sit outside the room near the door so that he could listen, then practice at home when he was alone so Jimin was self-taught. Later on, the company provided him with a vocal coach but still he sang so beautifully with no vocal training. Jimin was born to sing; his vocals are exquisite. I love hearing his lows, mid-range and highs in this MV. This was a long hard battle to self love for Jimin and he defeated the monster lies that were consuming him and he give the finger to all those who doubted him, who put obstacles in his way, who boxed him in and wouldn’t let him fly. “Fly away, butterfly, finally free.” I’m so excited for Jimin’s new chapter, he kicked it off with a bang and it’s already drawing out the haters but Jimin can handle it. Jimin said “I won’t hide anymore, even if it hurts” so he knows the hate will continue but he’s coming out of the shadows. He has so many engagements now. Before, there were fashion houses, producers, writers, other celebrities who wanted to work with him but the company said no and most of the time, he didn’t even know about it because they didn’t tell him. But now, he can pick and choose whatever offers come his way. I’m so damn proud of Jimin.

This is a masterpiece! Everything about it is impressive, Jimin is creative, fearless and a genius performer.

honestly the more i listen to it the more i love it. lots of people who are not bts fans were saying he can't sing because he used autotune. some army was not expecting the autotune, so they have to warm up to it. I personally liked it from the start and like it the more i hear it.

Personally think this is a masterpiece. It’s easily made it up to the top of my ultimate fav song list I don’t know much about the aave, so if I can comment on the other noises that are autotune and repetition of one phrase…,they were both every bit intentional and Jimin was involved in every part of the creative process. Autotune, as a lot are saying, is a choice to add angst and frustration to struggles with an inner voice. Heavy autotune was added only to the rap part, not throughout the entire song, unlike some people are mis-spreading. It’s a conversation between multiple inner thoughts. Other members of BTS have used autotune to make a strong point as well, and the whole industry does it. I hate overused autotune myself, but once i realized why it was used, I can really grow to appreciate it. It’s autotune used tastefully, cleverly, and artistically in this case. Also this is meant as a theatrical performance piece, the key message to this is obviously to set oneself free. The instrument, choir, and vocal adlibs build upon each repetition to add to the determination and strong desire towards wanting to be set free, but the major pull is the choreography with the dance crew which adds so much to make you immersed in the storyline of one’s struggles… you feel it!!! So it’s to be watched and listened to as a package. Jimin has given out a couple of interviews describing the thought process behind his first solo album which he was intimately involved. One thing for sure, he said this album follows a storyline (struggles especially during covid period and how he overcame to start anew as an own individual artist apart from the group that is BTS). This is the last track of the 5 (excluding the English version of like crazy), so Jimin shared the last page of the book to us first. I’m nervously looking forward to the prequels of this song in the upcoming album. Jimin never disappoints and always exceeds my expectations, and I’ve been a fan of him for 6 years. This was a masterpiece in my book.

Jimin is totally fearless. He didn't play it safe and the discourse this song is generating is making people take notice. I've seen reactors who never seen KPOP or BTS jump on the band wagon. There is method to the madness.

I absolutely love the song. He went deep and dark yet hopeful. I can't wait to hear the main album track. Rainer Maria Rilke's german 1899 poem "I Live In Ever-widening Circles" (choreography-hint?) painted on Jimin's body: "I live my life in ever-widening circles that reach out across the world. I love this mv, Jimin’s dance and dancers tell you the story with their body movements, I just feel more in love with everything music, lyrics, instrumental, visuals every time I watch it.. All I could notice in this video the first few times I watched it was how incredible Jimin is and how impactful the song is. His singing, the choreography, the choir, and the aesthetics are impeccably done. It wasn't until hours later after reading responses in social media that I realized there was hate towards this song. Thank you for reminding people to be respectful. Jimin is such a beautiful person and so is the message of this song.

This song is a contemporary masterpiece. The dancing, the expressions, I everything. It reminded me of why I felt drawn to Jimin since the beginning of my journey. You just feel his soul even with his head tilts. To me, autotune added a sense of inner conflict of trying to batte his demons to set himself free. The distortion was like an echo in a maze. This song is a masterpiece and to me even the repetition felt more like a mantra. It was like a conclusion to his song Lie. I feel like I can write an essay about this.

You must know, though, the repetitive “Set me free” is so purposeful because it is a powerful representation of his emotional begging/pleading to finally be able to be himself. The auto tune is obviously stylistic and it’s strategically placed where his anger/aggression lies, especially because he’s addressing his haters - who, for no SANE reason whatsoever, have bullied, mocked and threatened him (to kill him) for years! I believe he’s also telling himself to get out of his head, end the self-negativity and insecurities he’s had for years (also mainly stemming from the years of hate and criticism); so, It’s his second voice, if you will. The effect is that it gives him two voices, I think, to create a back and forth type of conversation…that’s my interpretation anyway. It’s a masterpiece in every way imaginable, as is Jiminie! He’s a genius…he’s King!!💜👑👏🔥💜

I will start by stating that people CAN have their opinions. That's perfectly fine. You can dislike a song and simply move on after listening to it but to put energy into writing hateful comments and labelling it as the 'worst Kpop song' ... THAT is malicious. Even before people have heard the song for themselves... before they can form their own opinion, antis have dragged it through the mud. These people who are claiming to simply defend their opinion would never give this same energy if they didn't like a J-hope, JK, V, Suga, Jin or RM song. They would write the usual, 'who will support the boys forever?' comments. If someone else had performed this exact song, executed the choreo THAT flawlessly and expressed that much crippling emotion... they'd be hailed as one of Kpop's greats. Keep nitpicking with comments about how Jimin can't sing because he used autotune...stylistically... in a song. Bold of you to assume that after 10 years in the industry, he has to prove that he can actually sing😂 Some of y'all make it seem like it's the end of the world if the idols don't perform as you expect them to. I know you're reading these comments. You're literally everywhere...obsessed with bringing Jimin down. This level of hostility has not been experienced with the other members. What heinous crime did Jimin commit to deserve such malign? Can't you allow him and his fans to enjoy this album before his enlistment? You've literally deprived him of everything. Peace. Rest. Love this! Love your honest reaction. I think your reaction was majority of ARMY too when this MV dropped but then it grows on you and you then understand why the things you pointed out - the auto tune, the repetition of Set Me Free in the latter part... it all makes sense eventually. ❣️Jimin’s “Set Me Free Pt.2’, it’s everything & more then I could hope for, Jimin’s amazing artistry, his so beyond spectacular,, so mesmerizing, phenomenal performance! The song, Jimin’s vocals, his dancing, the amazing choreography, also the amazing backup dancers, the lyrics he wrote, the music he composed as well as being involved in the production! Jimin was hands on, involved with every facet! No wonder the in-house legendary producer for BigHit Pdogg, who worked with Jimin throughout the whole album, stated that “in 2023 K-pop will be ended by Park Jimin”! Seeing this makes me that much more excited, waiting in anticipation for release of the full album, Jimin’s “FACE” on March 24, along with his other, main song ‘Like Crazy’ MV. Though Jimin’s song ‘Set Me Free Pt.2’, blew me away , meeting all my expectations & then some, I was also not totally surprised, because indeed Jimin is now ‘set free’ from the confines of being part of a group, to now be able to open up full throttle and ‘finally’ be able to release all that he held back for so many yrs! Jimin has been involved in every facet of creating this album! Hands on all the way, perfectionist that he is, including writing lyrics, composing, as well as being heavily involved in production! Jimin’s true, real, inner self will be finally seen in all its raw, authentic, amazing, heartfelt, passionate, emotional, sincere glory! This is aside from Jimin’s full range, hardly ever being shown, aside from high notes, but being finally able to show his full registry, mid range as well as lower registry as well! I’ve always been so frustrated not being able to see as well as hear Jimin’s full capacity of talent. I was also unsure the first watch. I only knew I had to watch it again. And again, and again. Then, I got it and now it is one of my favorite Jimin solos.

Just when you think you’re as impressed as you can be about the choreo you watch the dance practice and are in awe again witnessing the finer details, the synchronisation and that ground shake. WOW.

The other dancers keep forming a box around him, pushing him back into it when he briefly escapes, try to claw him down when he finally rises to freedom. The choreo makes them look jealous and angry about his escape... just like the haters (antis and stans for other groups) who've been trying to tear him down since debut. So original, artistic and evocative. Masterpiece.

look at 12:27 how quick the background dancers get in formation!! The whole choreo is such a masterpiece with lots of meaning, just like the song! Also the formation at 12:27 is not just a swirl, at least imo, he talking about an dead end in a maze in the lyrics!

I really love this song and I think it’s just so powerful. I get goosebumps everytime I hear, “Raise your hand for the past me”. Just knowing all the hate Jimin gets which I don’t understand why that is it’s just so impactful. I agree with u on the part towards the end when they all are surrounding him and bouncing their bodies, it did feel so liberating. I was hoping we'd hear him using his voice in new ways and wow was I not disappointed. 😊 This thing is such a work of art. The digital effects on his voice to create several voices in conversation with each other... The twangier sharp voice in his lower register we've never heard... A few spots with his cry and a hint of his familiar growl. He has so many voices in this, even without the autotune emphasizing the differences. I could talk about the choreography for hours. The symbolism, the lyricism, even the fact that the dancers are half women. The visual callbacks to On and Lie and Butterfly. He really made something that continues his story into the future without rejecting his past. Raise a hand to his past self. 💜 I have so many feelings about this song and I can't believe we get five more!

Just like the heavy auto tune, the repetitive SET ME FREE is deliberate choice to put emphasis on the mood of the song, especially if you're watching the choreo and specifically Jimin. The repetitive set me free is like a cry of help or desperation or sense of helplessness. You know when you're in a situation that seems so hopeless and you feel so powerless and you want to just cry. It feels like that to me. This song is very dark, especially with how he's always dragged back inside the formation and he doesn't resist much but he obviously wants to be set free. Then the ending, ugh, so good.

I'll say just one thing. Whoever doesn't like and hate Jimin's song doesn't understand music, talent and art!!!

Those who don't like the song are Jimin's second fandom, which I dont mind it adds to the publicity, he is still winning and shining, its breaking records already, the song and performance is a masterpiece. I can feel Jimin's emotion there's anger and sadness but liberating at the end.😊

I Can understand having to listen to songs twice! My first reaction of this song, even as a ult Jimin fan, was “eh. Uhm. Idk” but now I literally cannot get it out of my head. Choreo is top notch, production is top notch, vocals out of this world, of course, our Jimin. I’m proud of jimin s hard work on this song. 💜

I think the spiral was more like the sacred geometry of a seashell. The repetition gives people time to apply the words Set Me Free to themselves as well as him. The use of excessive auto tune makes me hear the voice more like a musical instrument than a vocal. I loved that. I heard he went on person for the recording of the choir. Also, just so hot. 😅💜

the use of autotune is intentional to signal his inner turmoil. in the 1st verse, we also hear 2 quotes and its also in autotune. but when jimin sings in his natural voice, he sings mostly in korean and in his truth. like you actually have to breakdown the lyrics to really understand of why he's using autotune in some part. and when these hard & soft voices cross, there seems to be a conflict. a conflict that powerfully resolves after several cycles of the pulsing chorus-“set me free”. this song subverts traditional kpop by using its fundamentals (synthesized music, sharp dance routines & fashionable outfits) to not to please & distract, but to honestly narrate jimin’s liberation story. this is a true masterpiece

People might say he needed the auto tone but it’s for the style and also it adds to the meaning of the song like his past self who wanted to be free and his thoughts after he was set free.

It's an Anthem and I am here for it! A lot of people can relate to these lyrics at least at one point in their life. This song came at a perfect time for me.

the "set me free" chant over and over is supposed to represent a literal "plea" to "set him free". and the autotune is there purely to indicate the contrast between his mindsets and attitudes(same thing happened in interlude Shadow, a yoongi song, where the second verse had autotune over aggressive rapping to show that his shadow was now talking) so yeah, the two things people are nitpicking on are totally for artistic purposes. and its not like he used autotune to make him sing better ...cuz have you HEARD Jimin???

I think the dance practice is much more dramatic than the mv, because you can see a lot more detail of the choreo. Both are truly amazing, congratulations to Jimin and his team 💜

But they missed the whole message here it was on purpose he is literally saying that he can sing and dance the way he likes regardless of what ppl think. The writing on jimin is a german poem which relates to the meaning of the song. I have heard several descriptions of the shape and one is it represents life. Jimin said that this song was his realizing that he was the only one that could set himself free. Perhaps from all the hate he gets from stans and others . Maybe from the things he does that stops him being his true self as an artist. I do believe the old jimin as far as music and caring about what others say is gone. And I say good for him he is a grown man and no ones expectations should matter. All that should matter is what he wants and makes him happy.

Same! The first time the autotune caught me by surprise but the more I listen to it the more I like it! It is such a nice contrast with his voice and it actually makes sense because it differentiates his real voice from his ‘internal’ voice

This song is a powerful statement, and the MV is performative art, as you suggested RJ! The MV , in my opinion, represents death and rebirth; the symbolic death of the old Jimin, and the birth of Jimin’s new self. It’s so profoundly deep, and there’s a beauty to its darkness. Even the haunting sound the choir’s “Glory!” in the beginning and end of the song lend beauty and more insight into what the song represents… As far as criticism, people are entitled to their opinions. I think much of it stems from it being so unpegged, and people fearing things that are different or dark. Art is progressive, it’s meant to be fluid and to change. True artists never follow the same formula, and to expect that is to dimish their gift. You don’t have to like this song, but you do have to allow Jimin, and all of the members, to grow and find themselves as artists. This is what creates legends, stop being afraid of change…💜

Jimin has let all the haters know he has grown as a person and artist. It is ok to have your own likes and dislikes BUT hatred and negativity toward anyone only hurts the haters. Please people BE KIND AND BE RESPECTFUL. And the MV is great and the energy of Jimin is fun to see and his voice- is awesome!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

When I watched this during the premiere, I liked it, but was just shocked because it was unexpected. I immediately watched it again and went from like to love. I found it to be really powerful from the choreo to the lyrics. He's not the first artist to use auto tune and won't be the last. We all know his talent and he sounded great! Honestly, BTS never disappoints whether they're together or doing their solo thing. I'll always support.💜

Nice use of auto tune in an artistic fashion. It reminded me of how GDragon used it in Heartbreaker. The choreo was sensational and the execution was terrific, too. It looked to me to have been filmed at the same studio at which Jimin did Vibe with TAEYANG - although clearly at a different time.

I had the same thought about the chorus repeating but I think the point is that he’s just desperately screaming to be set free and the repetition represents that turmoil of being stuck and going insane wanting to be free. That’s how interpret it anyway.

the spiral they make with the dancers is actually fibonacci. it is very used in art. It basically is the "perfect spiral", mathematically perfect and pleasing to the eyes (there is more to it but take it as "perfection of nature")

JIMIN!!!!!!! I've watched the MV at least 50 times since its release. The more I listen, the more I love. His soft ad libs are easy to miss at first. And of course he is BEAUTIFUL....

The autotune is a stylistic choice for the dark aesthetic he's conveying in this song. It also adds the call and response feel in the song. I love the fact that it's different from what most expected from him. Love the song.

So you think of the auto tuned as his internal voices. That he felt he was battling during the pandemic. The 3 lined choreo could be looked at as 3 stages of an artist career. First line is working hard and has the stone to the grindstone. 2nd line still working hard but is not as intense. 3rd line still dancing but is fully standing upright (no longer needing to beg for their progress). The writing on his body is a famous German poem in the 1890's called "Living My Life in Ever Widening Circles "💜🇺🇲

I had the same reaction as you the first time through. But it made me really think about why they structured the song this way. The instrumentation is pretty simple, mostly the beat and the brass. Most of the work is done by the vocals whether it's the choir or Jimin's main vocals and ad libs. So I think the voice manipulation is partly used as instrumentation like guitar riffs or drum fills to fill out the soundscape. But since he's also singing about the doubts and insecurities he's dealt with, the voice manipulation seems to represent different voices in his head. I also found his first line jarring the first time. But he's used that nasally tone when speaking in English (e.g., "I'm sweet guy.") so the autotune isn't changing his voice. This takes what we heard in Tony Montana and just ups the artistry tenfold.

The autotuned part was one of my favorite parts of the song. It highlights the emotion to tell the enemies to stfo. Haters gonna hate so those lines are for you! Saranghae Jiminah💜💜💜🔥🔥🔥

I have been waiting for you to check this out. I wanted to see your face through this and you delivered! The golden ratio (or Fibonacci) spiral has a lot of meaning, not the least of which is serving as a map for spiritual growth. The conversation he is having with himself through the auto tune (internal dialog) and his verbal response is so powerful. References to his previous solos (Lie) and BTS songs (On) are in there as are some other references. The poem on Jimin's chest is by a German Author by Rainer Maria Rilke is so powerful. The last sentence of that poem reads, "I've been circling for thousands of year and I still don't know: am I a falcon, a storm, or a great song?" It completely ties to the concept of the album FACE and the art for the cover of that album.

Pay attention. I am BY FAR not a K-pop fan. This is not K-pop. This is in a class all its own. This was absolutely SPECTACULAR! Forget, forgotten, gone concerning all the haters complaining about the auto tuning used. Even if you've never heard Jimin sing before, there are plenty of times throughout the video (where there's no auto tuning) when you can hear his obvious vocal talent and range, so auto tuning OBVIOUSLY isn't being used to compensate for lack of talent but rather for strategic and artistic purposes. But haters gonna hate, right? Be prepared. This is Jimin's Billie Jean album! I bet. Truly looking forward to following Jimin's solo career. Do I hear the roar of #JiminArmy maybe? ;) Peace.
