N.O. Means “No Offense” like one would usually say when what we are going to say is going to sound rude or offensive. But they are not trying to be rude, it’s more of a wake up call for youths and motivate you to live your dreams, live for yourself and not be caught on someone else’s dreams.

This was raising their voices against harsh, strict Korean educational system. It's one of the hardest in the world. SKY stands for 3 top most S.Korean universities.

The explanation you've read for the song is essentially accurate. But without knowing the Korean education system (and Japanese for that matter) it's hard to catch the complete meaning. Korean kids doesn't just go to school, after they finish their classes they go to cram school as well, every single day. They basically get up at 6AM and go to school until 10PM, go home to do their homework and study until 2-3AM to fall in bed and start all over again the next day. The pressure on them is so enormous that South Korea has the highest level of teenage suicide in the world, many kids simply don't see any other way out of their situation. Especially if they don't manage to get into a good school after their exams, the whole society tells them that their life is over, they screwed up, it's the end. So for many it literally means the end. So the song is not just the simple, Western "oh don't let anybody tell you what to do with your life", it's way more serious than that.

This song is a criticism of the Korean educational system that often leads young people to despair and suicide BTS also encourages young people to follow their dreams and not something that has been set for them..🇧🇷💜

Hope that you're able to watch the documentary series (21 chapters) "The Rise of Bangtan". This series was about BTS background and also touched on the topic of how Kpop started in South Korea.

Not necessary just SK. The Asian culture as a whole is strict about education. I grew up in the USA. I have to have good grades all the time.

Right from the begining BTS were not afraid to be controversial. Attacking the study culture was really controversial. They also spoke to their own fan base SPINEBREAKER, about young people's demand for expensive designer brands was breaking their parents spines who bought them items they could not afford for fear of their children being bullied. This came to head with their MV of SPRING DAY and its imagery and symbolism about the outrageous Sewol Ferry tragedy that caused governmental clamp down on all media but eventually brought down a government.

Yeah study culture is no joke in Asia... never in the West do you hear of kids that'd unalive themselves from pressure to study yet it was their main cause of death in youth. Surprised that no one has commented this yet, but their later song ON was also a direct reference to the flipping around of this song N.O 🙂

Jimin’s butterfly kick is 🔥🔥🔥 i love this song and the meaning. Jimin wrote his songs on chapter 2 so i can relate to him more and the rapline.

You got it right. And it wasn't common for K-pop to go on 'rebelious' messages back then. They have been consistent with societal crticism and it Is exactly why it bothers me tremendously that they went into military service 😢😢 I don't think they actually believe in that system ...but reponsibilities and so😢😢😢

Middle and high schoolers in South Korea are in school, other academic classes, and study halls an average of 14 hours per day. The pressure to succeed and get into one of the three big universities is immense! The suicide rate among 12 to 20 year olds is very high. Speaking out against an educational system that causes this kind of pressure is just one of BTS' missions. I'm sure you're familiar with some of their other socially conscious messages. Not only is the music great, but the message keeps us going back! Thank you for your reactions. 💜
