The theory going around is that the bird that was killed and is brought back to life represents jungkook. when jin saves the bird from the arrow, jungkook escapes. when jin releases the bird, jungkook’s restraints disappear and return with the conch shell. and then at the end when he’s watching the birds flying :) there’s also a lot of biblical references such as jesus’ baptism in the river, noah’s ark etc.!
The part where jk walks into the river reminds me of when Jesus was being tortured with the spiky crown and he called to his father and all of a sudden the clouds got really dark and it was a bad storm ! Just like in this my when jk blew the pipe the clouds suddenly got dark ! Idek just an idea
It all is connected and you are right about the biblical references but it also ties back to the Jungian Theory that they have as a theme in the album. After rewatching and comparing notes to old materials and all the clues they have been leaving, it makes complete sense both in the context of the storyline and the concept of Jung. Here is my understanding of it. In the MAMA 2019 VCR, They had this whole title Journey to myself in there and how future meets past (*J-hope wearing modern clothes, the broken down car in jimin's scene, the modern/futuristic looking wall, remember in ego how j-hope drove towards the past instead of the future), Past meets present and present meets future to make this whole eternal journey. The hero's journey. The Hero is one of the main archetypes in Carl Jung's theory. Here I think the Hero is Jungkook who I think is also a representation of John the baptist (associated with the announcing of the coming of Jesus, peep the thorns in the handcuffs and him being in the river blowing the conch which is basically a symbol of call for freedom and renewal, also reminds me of the scene about Jesus baptism and how the word baptism literally means being born again, and also in the bible, there is the mention of a dove who came down during the baptism which represents the holy spirit and the holy spirit is basically the spirit of renewal and purification). John was a prophet who was later imprisoned for his beliefs, literally a hero who later became a martyr which ties to the theory of sacrifice ( in the Omelas book bout the child living in misery for everyone to be happy). Also the bound hands I think are a direct reference to Matthew 14 there is a whole paragraph where it talks about John the Baptist being imprisoned by King Herod. John was the forerunner/announcer of the messiah who represents a wind of change, death of the old beliefs and birth of the new. This whole mv depicts the Hero's journey, and so it flips through many archetypal events like death, separation, birth and it keeps repeating itself like a loop. That connects to the storyline where Jin keeps going back in time to fix things, if you notice how all the people who died in the beginning, and the dove who was dead as well seemed to come back to life at the end and show up at the wall. And then there are the archetypal motifs by Jung like the apocalypse, the deluge/flood (Noah's ark), creation (the whole scene at the end where everything is born again all green). But in order to give birth/to create, one must basically destroy (remember the whole quote from the demian book from the wings era) so when jungkook blows the conch he is basically calling for that renewal/revolution. To free themselves from the old in order to have the new, so that's why right after you see the whole dance sequence where it is all dark and crazy (looks like a whole battle scene really. And then everything gets set on fire before being born again/ created again. And then other Jungian archetypes are the wise old man (RM in Noah’s role), The child (this is pretty self-explanatory and it makes sense that V would be the one to be with the child, he has a whole solo in his album called “Inner Child” and it also makes sense that the child is a girl, Carl Jung concept of Anima/animus). The john the baptist thing could totally be tied to the Noah (wise old man,jungian archetype)/ Noah's ark thing. Both John and Noah were prophets and they were both ridiculed for their beliefs and the messages that they preached (like BTS in the beginning when they were made fun of for their name and their concept, and the way they dressed or did things), both John and Noah were announcers of a new world/ a new change, John announced the coming of Jesus (a new wind of change) and the abolishment of the olden beliefs of the time while Noah announced the Flood which basically destroyed the whole world and as a result a new world was born again (Just like BTS basically paved the way for a whole industry and also they are the forerunners of a new type of art, they are innovative in everything they do and also try to help change their generation, and the world with their music). Also, the dove thing is present in both Noah and John the baptist stories, Noah I believe released a dove to find out whether or not it was safe to go outside which I think happened when Jin released the dove first before they entered the wall. The dove is also a representation of love and peace and freedom which is why Jin was mourning its death so much in the beginning. Another Jungian archetype is the wise old woman/caretaker (Jin taking the bird home with him, and suffering at seeing the pain around him, in the storyline Jin is also the one who always tries to go back to save everyone and in BTS Jin also happens to be one of the caretakers, taking jungkook to school, cooking on birthdays etc..). There is also the God archetype which is all-knowing/idolized and tends to lead and be followed (Peep Suga in the church, in an almost sect-like setting with all his followers, who happen to be young people) which is attached to the trickster archetype (in this case may be J-hope because of his whole Munchausen syndrome thing in the storyline and how Loki the trickster god carries a bow and arrow, like J-hope in blood sweat and tears). But Like I said the two archetypes are closely attached because the trickster archetype can be a god/ a spirit/ a human who has secret knowledge or intellect and uses it to disobey conventions which would explain why his followers are dressed in red and yellow, the colors in that scene I believe references the 18th-century Scandinavian depiction of the trickster God Loki. {side note: BTS has always taken the role of spokespeople for the youth, and they have always gone against convention, against the system and they always had the expertise and the skills/knowledge on how to deliver their message and their whole name basically takes that into account. And I also thought it interesting that Suga take one the God archetype closely attached to the Trickster archetype considering how there is a running joke in the fandom and the group about how much random information and knowledge he has stored in his brain lol and how close he is to J-hope, they had/have a whole sub-unit/ship name called SOPE} The robe (red robes to symbolize energy, passion, and action in this case) thing ties to their Fake love era. How? Well back during that time they had to destroy their masks in order to face themselves aka their inner selves. In this map of the soul era, they did confront their shadows but remember that confronting the shadow doesn't mean getting rid of it, it is more like trying to achieve balance, in order to reach individuation, so by accepting and understanding their shadow they have basically broken down the wall between their outer selves and their inner selves which you see dressed in the cloaks like in fake love and by doing that they have basically shattered/destroyed/set on fire their old world and basically made a whole new one (all the green at the end) where everything is balanced persona/shadow/ego. so that is why you see the destruction right after they show up in the red cloaks with jungkook (the announcer) holding the conch signaling the end of the old and the beginning of the new. And that is why instead of the fireballs going towards the shadow figures, they are shot towards us, the viewers and towards the world around them. I mean it is pretty fucking insane how much detail and care went into this. There is a connection with their project Connect BTS (global art project) with all the paintings and the setting references and choice of clothing during the mv. Like the bindings on jungkook’s wrists do remind me of the Gormley exhibit in New York, The whole dance scene with the bonfires, and the whole set there remind me of the ritual of care thing, and I believe some people were talking about that on twitter, the whole greenery, the trees, the rivers remind me of Catharsis. There is also all the references to tracks on the album, like UGH (J-hope being indifferent and singing in front of the corpse being eaten by the raven/crow), Black swan (the abandoned and broken drums in Jimin's scene, signaling abandonment of music/the death of their art), we are bulletproof the eternal (coming together at the end of all the trials crossing the wall together), Ego (Journey to the past) etc... RM did say that this album was all about rebooting, and rebirth so it makes sense that the mvs main focus would be the journey to that rebirth/reboot. And this is just one of the main things in this mv, there is just so much detail and so many more Easter eggs and clues related to the storyline and the album. They even paid attention to the choices of bird and animals they put in the mv. I would be here all day if I went into all the details. This whole thing is genius.

This is just me though, the message of the MV is "Freedom". They've stayed within the walls long enough, and now with an ARMY charging with them, they are ready to go outside and embrace/battle all the negativity that comes their way. It is ON!

The best theory I've read so far, says that the MV doesn't represent their journey here, but the journey to DEBUT. each of them represents their individual struggles. Jk_ running from what he considered a prison, lost and alone. RM_ as Noah, discredited, because many made fun of him, and that this dream would be impossible. JH_ It shows the difficulties of staying in this industry that benefits from Idols, while appearing in front of Jungkook who clearly needs help, showing that while some shine others fall into oblivion. SG_ It represents the faith that they had in themselves but at the same time knowing that this path was lonely. JIN_ as an older man he feels responsible for taking care of them and maintaining hope, and yet having to deal with his own insecurities. JIMIM_ represents the desire that they had to be recognized, when the general public and media called them. V_ everything changes when Taehyung joins this little girl, who represents the Armys, making an allusion to the music video with LUV. I also read that they said that the little girl is not Korean to represent the fact that the Armys have crossed the language barrier. hence JK runs that business that I don’t know the name the boys join together to become BTS. So in the end NO MORE DREAM BECOMES DREAM "(THAT IS DEBUT'S MUSIC). I found this theory sensational, for me it was the best, I saw on insta and all the credits for Army who managed to think about all of this. 😍😄

The religious reference in the MV was something I also thought about when I saw it. Like, you know how there's quite a few mentions of the number 7 in the Bible? Yeah.

Theory about Jungkook from a Christian's standpoint: Jungkook is represented as the "Jesus" figure. Jesus came into this world as a prisoner to save the world. He sacrificed Himself for all of us. During the end of Jesus' life ... He was captured for no reason and taken as a prisoner even though He was innocent throughout His entire lifetime. Jesus was rejected by the world. "He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief" (Isaiah 53:3). The part where Jungkook was running reminded me of this verse: "... He [Jesus] was cut off from the land of the living" (Isaiah 53:8). The thorns holding Jungkook's hands together made me think back to Jesus' imprisonment. Throughout the time of trial, Jesus was ridiculed, mocked, and hated on ... the Roman soldiers put on Him a "crown of thorns" to mock Jesus because He called Himself the Son of God. Comparison of the MV and the Bible #1: The thorns holding together the hands of Jungkook and exposed as a prisoner represents the crown of thorns that Jesus had on him as well during the time of His trial and death. "And after twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His head, and a reed in His right hand; and they knelt down before Him, saying, 'Hail, King of the Jews!' (Mathew 27:29). Comparison of the MV and the Bible #2: Look at Jungkook's hands at 1:17 ... there are lots of deep cuts and marks going up his arms. This represented the time when Jesus was flogged by the Roman soldiers. "He ordered Jesus flogged with a lead-tipped whip, then turned Him over to the Roman soldiers to be crucified" (Matthew 27:26). ".. But He [Jesus] was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins. He was beaten so we could be whole. He was whipped so we could be healed" (Isaiah 53:5). Jesus had wounds all over His body before his death. Comparison of the MV and the Bible #3: Then, while Jungkook was running away he suddenly stops and starts looking upwards intently with deep sorrow, pain, desperation, and agony. Additionally, right after that Jungkook fell down onto the ground and "died." This reminded me of the last moments of Jesus on the cross. Even during the time of Jesus' agony, Jesus prayed for the people who were killing Him, "Father, forgive them, for they know now what they do" (Luke 23:34). Right before Jesus died, He looked upwards to His Heavenly Father and stated "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit" (Luke 23:46). Right after these words came out of the mouth of Jesus, He died on the cross. Additional notes: - I know that Jungkook died because during Jhope's verse at 2:06 ... you can definitely see Jungkook with a crow pecking at him on top of him. That represents death. Crows normally eat dead carcasses.) - Also, I think the people inside the wall represents the people who have already died. Comparison of the MV and the Bible #4: Suddenly, Jungkook opens his eyes at 2:59 and right after that the wall opens. Jesus also rose again on the third day. After Jesus rose up back to life ... the grave opened, some of the dead came back to life. "and tombs opened. The bodies of many godly men and women who had died were raised from the dead. They left the cemetery after Jesus' resurrection (came back to life), went into the holy city of Jerusalem, and appeared to many people" (Matthew 27:52,53). The wall might represent the tomb/grave that was opened during the resurrection of Jesus. The dead who rose up walked out into the city ... it reminded me of the people walking outside of the wall inside the MV. This is what I theorize from that small section of the MV. It can be connected to a lot more things but as a Christian I was so shocked with the amount of biblical illustrations they put forth throughout the MV. More conclusions can be drawn from the next parts but I would have to do more research and thinking. That’s my personal perspective 😿😻

Is Jin really a Time Traveler ?? The one who goes to save the birds goes back to the past so that no war occurs which causes the bird to die ... (the bird symbolizes JK) while 2. Did you realize that Jungkook's part from the beginning is kinda painful? Cuz I felt that a lot when I watched the MV. I cried a lot especially on JK's part. Like he's struggling to be free from his pain. But I think Jin, the dove and Jungkook have related story. Cuz we all know Jin's role in BTS story line is the most important one. 2:27 - At the end of the flood a dove was sent out to find vegetation as a proof of dry land and a sign of peace with God, the dove finds and brings back an olive branch showing that there was peace. This is why the dove is the symbol of peace and why "extending an olive branch" is an idiom for trying to find peace. In the beginning of the video Jin is in a battlefield, with a wounded (apparently dead) dove. He takes it and puts it in a covered birdcage, and we see this isn't the first one. This war has been going on a long time. The twitch of the cage shows that first stirring of the possibility of peace... but how do we get there?
A disclaimer: This is only my theory but there is lots of biblical references in this!! The Noah's Ark with the animals in Namjoon's part, Jin checking with the doves if there is sign of life just like Noah did after the flood that wiped out everything in Earth, the crown of thorns on Jungkook's hand and him in the river reminded me of the baptism at the Jordan river. There is something called the seven trumpets in the book of Revelation and Jungkook blowing the horn signifies the start of apocalyptic events and you can actually see shots of dark skies and the volcano erupting after that. Years of Catholic school drilling the bible into my head was actually useful lol 😂

It's a visual masterpiece that portrays through the iconography of the Bible and the color palette of Alchemy the Jungian Map of the Soul and the path of individuation. * - In Suga's part later you see he's in the Tabernacle surrounded by a color palette of Black, White, Red (and Yellow.) * - The Philosopher's Stone in Alchemy comes from taking a piece of the void (Nigredo, Black) -> Purifying it (Albedo, White) -> and finally arriving at the finalized form of the Philosopher's Stone (yes, the one from FMA and Harry Potter) (Rubedo, Red.) * - To Jung, this was a handy symbol for - taking the Shadow (all of the rejected parts of Self not acceptable to society and purged off of the Persona [the compromise with the Outer World, the mask we show. On MotS:7 this is RM's song Intro: Persona]), - bringing it to consciousness (the Albedo phase, raising it from the unconscious darkness to the light of consciousness), - and finally completing the journey of integration and Individuation becoming a complete person in that ultimate goal (Rubedo, the Philosopher's Stone, the Individuated Self). This is just one set of references from the color scheme of one scene.
