the lady at the beginning that owns the restaurant and always fed them during rehearsals still supports them to this day, and holds small events for each member's birthday to cheer them on, it's just so sweet 😭 the whole place is decorated with their posters and merch now and armys always make sure to go to her restaurant when they travel to korea to thank her for always being there for them 💜

They had fans before debut because they started uploading covers and all AAAAAALL the vlogs (6 months prior), giving us a glimpse of what a trainee, an idol goes through, as normal people they are. It wasn't common at all, since idols as they mentioned in the video, are these untouchable, perfect people ;) But they weren't, they were silly, tired, frustrated... and those human emotions create connections. Not just adoration about someone who seems to be "up there" ;)

"How could they have fun with all the stress"... Because unlike other agencies, this stress was not imposed, it was their choice and a deal between them and their agency... BTS always had a say in the organization of their schedule (even more so today of course) and as they often said themselves they had the rage to win, and even before they started they were very keen to have this intimate contact with their fans through the diary's log, then the live talk, their weverse platform where they write and answer their fans, and then twitter and instagram. You didn't pay attention to everything their CEO said, that's where the difference with other bands and even some artists in the world lies. I take it back for you "I didn't force a mandatory amount of practice or dictate how they live their lives. They were given freedom to it all and the members participated accordingly. I only asked one thing from them, thet BTS's music must contain the stories of their inner selves." In this episode, it is underlined the difference between the beginnings of BTS and the other groups, of course there is common, but the 1st members were recruited differently through hiphop battles in order to form a hiphop crew, but given the disastrous situation of BigHit at the time and its weak power with the media, they redirected thereafter towards a kpop group but with the Hiphop spirit, which gave them more chance to attract the attention... And keep in mind that when you start out with no financial means, with committed messages and in a dominated culture, you have to be motivated and work 100x harder... Let's be honest even in the dominant culture, US and Europe, POC have a hard time breaking through and have to work much harder than white people just to get the recognition... Just look at the Grammys, since their inception in 1958 I believe, only 10 black artists have won the Grammy for best album, and otherwise they are often confined to the secondary or worse urban categories, and this is just one example. One of the wonders that BTS has achieved is that they have succeeded without going through the system, mediaplay and corruption... They went and got the fan themselves and gave themselves up sincerely.

Bang PD (ceo of Big Hit) is such a passionate producer too that's why he's not as strict as other agencies. As he said, they (BTS) all have freedom and is willing to train and learn, but their music must contain their inner stories. This is also what sets BTS and Big Hit apart from the big 3 (SM, JYP, YG) or any other idol groups/companies- is that *they have freedom to be creative.* BTS creates whatever their hearts wants and Big Hit supports them. They let their feelings, thoughts, troubles- pour into their music and they were able to share it to the world. They don't have to pretend or fake it, because Bang PD isn't strict upon giving a certain concept, everyone in the company shares their love for music. Like if Jin wants to sing about tuna, then he's more than free to make a song (Supertuna is genuinely a great song) Just like at 2015 when Rap Mon released his mixtape "Rap Monster" and it's about his identity as an idol, rapper, and his (BTS') credibility in hip-hop. Bang PD asked him "is this really what you want to do?" and Rap Mon said he just gotta do this, so he can move forward. He gotta let it out. His mixtape is a reflection from the prejudice they received, since they're underground rappers turned into "idols" and they were discriminated by their own peers. Saying they were on the right path but strayed. So the fact that Bang PD approved, must meant a lot to RM, Suga, and the boys at the time. It's sad that Bang PD stepped down being the ceo (at 2020/2021 I think?) to focus on what he's truly passionate about- producing. Bang PD is not the ceo anymore but atleast he's a full time producer now ^^ There's so much that has happened and we gotta give credit to Big Hit, BTS, and ARMY for being at the top with our own system. I'm grateful that they, and we, have come so far.

I agree with everything you wrote, except for one thing. I think it’s great that Bang PD has stepped down - he can now concentrate on something he really loves (producing music) while still being involved with the company and BTS. As CEO his days were probably full of endless meetings!

@@mydogblowsbubbles oh yeah totally. I'm just sad he's not the ceo anymore. there's a lot of _issues_ that has been happening, and I just feel more at ease knowing it's Bang PD whose controlling Big Hit and stuff- not to say it's a bad thing he stepped down. I just trust him more basically, but as I've said, atleast he got the role he loves and able to pass the torch to somebody else. I respect that ^^ am still kinda sad though.

Bang PD hired a professional and worked him in for 1 year or something. The new CEO also dances on the left in PTD (as does Mr. Bang). The company is big now with 100s of people depending on it. Someone who does it as his first workway/an expert SHOULD do the CEO position (not that Bang PD can't fire him: he still has the majority of stocks and is head chairman). And quiet a few Idols write and are creative: Ravi for example or G-Dragon or IU. Just because it is rarer does not mean it doesn't happen. You can look up writing credits of Idols from the KOMCA. I just yesterday looked onto a list from january of this year that was posted on allkpop. I had googled it. Little freedom does not mean no freedom. 💜

19:02 I hope you get now how different Bang PD (Bang Si-hyuk) and Big Hit was/is and how differently they treated BTS than what other companies treated their trainees and you saw how others like Black Pink was treated. This first episode points out and shows how horrible other companies and trainees at other companies had it compared to BTS. And how BTS was producing themselves because they wanted and they talk about working all night because they wanted to finish stuff (btw they are often up at night now too, you notice that on Instagram and weverse, especially Jimin, JK and Hobi and Suga too so it's not just for work), as Bang says here 19:02. He talks of freedom and no mandatory practice, the girls and boys at the other companies talked about all the practice they were forced to do and even having to lose a certain amount of weight to get to go home etc. really different from Bang's philosophy and leadership as ceo of Big Hit. I've seen some people watch this and totally miss the point and think Big Hit was the same and that BTS was treated like the others and missing that the other trainees at other companies tell horror stories and BTS says how they work hard and care for eachother and Bang wants them to be their true self and tell their own stories. And as Bang says they weren't a mainstream company like Black Pink's companie etc. Don't get me wrong they worked hard they still work really hard but that is not the same thing. 20:24 yes it was before their debut, their debut was in June 2013. 27:30 no they did not do that every day. we do not have logs from every day. Also in the beginning of the video someone says something like that kpop idols aren't born but made and that kpop idols seem so high above and untouchable, larger than life and that is kpop idols and that is the opposite of BTS from before debut to now. yes they are amazing and crazy talented all of them but they worked hard for it and they are down to earth and humble and Koreans and international fans all say that they feel more like friends and not high above celebrities. So do not think all said in these episodes is meant about BTS and how they are and had it, sometimes like in this it shows others opinions of things others experiences and differences between BTS and others. 44:27 no not like the big companies. Big Hit was small, didn't have the money but BTS were on You Tube and vlogged and had a blog so they got some followers before debut. But then when they debuted and showed their insane talent too not only great personalities and when people got to hear their lyrics that were real and different from normal kpop, that's when fans rolled in. 45:29 yes if you follow along you will.

In kpop, it is very common to have fans BEFORE debut especially if it's from a big company. For example, if a big company announced that they will have a new boygroup, they would post pictures of them, and the fans of the company would highly anticipate their debut. But since Bighit wasn't a big label at that time, they had another strategy in mind and it was the blog, website as well as their youtube content that attracted some fans. It was VERY different from what other companies would do, so I guess some people loved this unusual stuff.

They werent forced to do video logs, they did them if they wanted, that was the beauty. What they did was not normal for groups, they were allowed to do video logs and express themselves however they wanted whereas as the rest of the industry is tight controlled to give off the image of perfection. The aim of the video is to show you the difference in how kpop operated as oppose to Big hit - as the CEO Bang said he didnt give them any specific amount of hours to practice the only thing he asked from them was to put their personal stories into it :)

Bighit didn't have the finances to promote Bangtan in the early years. You know how they reached international fans? By letting them post logs on RU-vid and giving them all access to twitter. Before BTS, other bands were not allowed full access to social media. Everything had to go through their companies. Other bands were promoted as idols, godlike beings etc to be worshipped. BTS were portrayed as human beings like you and me, highly relatable! And why they are always having fun? They had Bighit, who actually treated them like humans.

The thing is, the different between Big Hit Ent n other companies, the Big Hit staffs treat their artists (which is BTS) as human, that’s why bangtan members still be able to having fun by goofing around each other in between and or during packed schedules. Not to names name, but other companies treat their artists as products, that’s why they’re miserable. Ofc there’s a lot of downs in the process of BTS, but not from the big hit staffs, but from other fandoms, other labels, the media, the government in charge at that time, etc. I’m not a company stan but i really appriciate what Big Hit has done n stand for bangtan. Bangtan members themselves have spoken so many times about this matter.

@wendydubbelyou
@wendydubbelyou 2 года назад
All k-pop groups are formed, there are some bands (k-pop groups that play insturments) that formed themselves, but the groups are all formed through training and companies, street casting is very normal in Korea not all idols that make it where casted, but a lot are, out of BTS Jin is the only one that was casted on the street. All the video diary's that you see in this video are before debut they debut on June 13, 2013. They were working on there first album during this period. The 8 hours dancing and record is not what they did for 3 years straight (they still trained hard though), but when debut days was coming closer they increased the trainging. Still very exhausting none the less. That's why during that period certain members didn't get back until 6 am in the morning. Jimin was known as the hardest working trainee, he would train until 4 am and woke up at 6 am to go to school. The restaurant the spend their trainee days still exist it is now full of BTS merchandise and they have the BTS menu, which is the menu BTS ate as trainees, as the menu didn't exist before, but due to BTS it was created. Yes RM did not have any dance experience as he was supose to debut in a hip hop group but the group fell apart and the project changed so he suddently had to dance to be able to debut. hey didn't do video logs every night, some nights and only some members not always everyone. Fun fact the reason why J- hope at 43.10 writes to bangtan fan instead of ARMY is because the fandom name didn't exist back then. The reason that they were still able to have some fun was that they are young, they genuinely like and respect each other, and the company wasn't as strict on them as other k-pop companies, and they have passion for there careers. But they fought and had tuff times J-hope left the group even for a little bit, jimin was almost cut from the team a few times, suga got into a car accident when he was a part time delivery guy. So they definitly weren't happy and positive all the time. The promotion they did before debut where the video diarys, vlogs, and cover posted by the members themselves on there fan cafe and blogs. That's the promotion they did. The fans then got to see who the members where and how they where working on debuting, but there where no subtitles so fans translated everything back than. Those fans are incredible!! It is a lot that I worte, but these are all the answers to your questions you had. Hope it is informing

it's impossible that they weren't tired or stressed with all of those activities and pressure, but because they have a great passion for what they do (they love their job) and especially among the BTS trainees who were there at that time they were very supportive of each other (sc: ex-BTS trainee) which made them have a great time. we can also see that the BTS members have been very comfortable with each other from the beginning of their career. from what I see Bang pd (ceo) takes good care of BTS members, this is quite rarely seen in the Korean ent world where the CEO/companies really cares about their artists and also give freedom to their creativity as an artist.

Hitman Bang did not want him to be snatched away by other agencies (it is usual that agencies snatch trainees from other companies as they are still not contracted). So poor V mostly stayed off camera when the whole band was vlogging, or he sat on the floor near the trash can. He was revealed when the countdown on Big Hit website started for Bangtan Sonyeondan. RM hid his eyes behind glasses because he did not meet the 'Korean beauty standards' and a lot of antis and haters let him know :s Good thing he lost the sunglasses and the mohawk :)

WHY would he have to hide (and Jimin and the others all said he had to hide) if your narrative is the correct one? Do you want to imply the members are lying? He wouldn't have been chosen as the SIXTH member - as you well know Jimin was the last member to be chosen for Bangtan - why would he had to hide if not for fear of him being snatched by other companies. You know that trainees are free to chose and the big3 are well known for snatching trainees from their competitors.

@@sc0ttishlass yes I’m aware that the big3 tends to take and offer trainees at other companies to join theirs and I’m also aware that all of the members have said he was a hidden member but none of them nor the company have stated the reason why it’s just an assumption made by ARMY. Here is a quote from the Rolling Stone interview: [V] was a “hidden member,” who didn’t appear on camera in the endless vlogs and other ingenious online promotion that preceded BTS’ debut in June 2013. “I actually can’t understand it whatsoever,” he says now, with a laugh. “Why did they do that? Why was that the concept? I really had no idea!” (Bang belatedly offers an answer: “We needed momentum to announce that the team called BTS was finally complete. V had great charms in terms of appearance and personality, so I thought it would be impactful when he was revealed last. It was an effective strategy in forming the team’s overall image, as well as leaving an impression of each member.”)

I think the fact that Big Hit allowed for them to be so involved in the process really gave them empowerment. And with empowerment comes a lot more drive, investment and passion with what you are doing. I think it’s hard to pinpoint the exact reason for their great success as they have so many key factors and qualities. Whatever the reasons, they have the perfect recipe. 💜

I love this documentary, it's a great way to know them and feel that you're part of the process still. I don't know if you have noticed, but this documentary is going to show how the other companies treat their artists, how they do things and then, how Big Hit/Hybe does with the boys. Explaining your last question, even before debuting, the boys had online presence by posting covers, those logs that you saw, small clips and we're present on social media too, that's why they already had people who knew their work even before debuting. This logs and covers are still on their channels and SoundCloud account.

Someone who trained together with BTS once mentioned in an interview that the relationship of the trainees at Big Hit was more of brotherhood which was something unheard of from other companies, where competition was a common mindset among trainees. He specifically mentioned RM being a very responsible and thoughtful leader even then, telling them to look after each other and help each other out when a trainee needed help with anything, and be happy for whoever makes it to the final lineup. I guess that friendship helped them combat stress and difficulties.

You asked how they could be happy all the time and have fun with all the stress but honestly I feel that it's the fact that they could have fun and enjoy their work that made the stress manageable. There have been moments where members thought of leaving the group before debuting like JHope and Jungkook but it is because they have each other and their trust in each other that they stayed. Suga too dealt with depression and I'm sure all the members had times when the stress caught up to them physically and mentally but they are a family. I believe they were able to overcome all that because of the strong emotional support and trust system they have with each other and because of their drive. In their early years, BTS was looked down upon a lot be it for the size of BigHit, their looks or their style of music. They had the drive and passion to prove everyone who said they wouldn't make it wrong.

I remember reading that trainees who didn't make the cut have explained that the trainee period for BTS was very different from most such situations - because RM (who was there from the start) set the tone; he reminded everyone that they might end up working together with these people in the future, so they should look out for each other and foster a positive and supportive environment. Cutthroat competition, backstabbing and "every man for himself" would be detrimental when you're suddenly stuck working and living together through really high-stress periods, so this was probably the foundation of the friendship and brotherhood that the boys built over time.

This series is seriously good so I am glad you have come here. Yay! Yes, their work schedules were and still are unimaginable, especially for such young people! They would practice just DANCE for 16 hours a day in prep for a new release, and also have to record - so when DID they sleep?. BUT in Korea it is not at all unusual for high school students to study for 16-18 or 20 hours a day - they have normal school, then go to "academies" or private tuition into the evening - and someone is selling a special "booth" for your teen - which is a box the size of a desk and a chair space, with a door, so it can be closed on the child so there are no possible distractions from their study - I find it a bit scary and awful. In terms of comparing idol training with sports training - few sports academies place quite the same pressure on young people as idol companies do - any regime requiring a specific weight loss EACH DAY from anyone is most likely impairing their health not to mention their mental health. There have been major scandals even in Korea about the failure of companies to provide adequate care - and mental health issues are common and often ignored, though that's changing a bit now (following several suicides). It's possible the most vulnerable to abuse are the girls several of whom have reportedly been basically pimped out by their management in the past. Any regime where that is even possible is pretty corrupt and you can be sure there are much more widespread issues we never hear about. Don't get me wrong - I have huge respect for idols, even if they don't meet BTS' standards in my eyes. They are very skilled and hugely talented. They are usually strong personalities and very resilient - because they have had to learn to be - and that can be brutal. But I am frankly concerned by any blase statement about "well, we do that with sports, don't we" - because no, I don't think you do - there is a lot more to it. Idols are leaving home as young as 13 years - JK was 14 - and he was lucky - competition within trainee groups is fierce and some kids are bullied - bullying in Korean schools seems to be endemic and unregulated by adults in any way! JK says he is lucky his hyungs were good to him - this is what he means. Bullying is common from teachers/trainers too - one clip of BTS raised a lot of conceern, when one "manager" was spotted in just a couple of seconds of film, apparently hitting JK and telling him to get a move on (clip now removed) - he was never seen again after the outcry. Many kids fail, and I feel so bad for them - but I have to respect that they tried. I think it is somewhat sad that the demand for training remains so high - when realistic chance of ANY success is so slight, and huge debts can arise for the trainees. Suicide rate for teens in Korea is the highest in the world. Idol training is not the cause for that, but the pressures that adults seem to feel it's OK to put on teens IS. That's why BTS had the mission statement they did - and it's still needed, and still there, though it has now matured to take a different form.

Sigh... you sound like one of the "The Dark Side of Kpop"-vids... Try to watch for example *bby* *gang* *mag* s videos/ essays. A little bit more nuances would help. And Modern dance was invented because ballett is so not good for the mind. Sports in general are at the highest level not exactly healthy. What Russia puts classical musican kids through is also not nice. And what happens in the West with musicians? Demi overdosed, Britney Spears just got free, Nick Carter sued his brother to stay away from his family, there are Justin Biebers "scandals"... if I wanted I could go on and on. Life is not fair. But eating trouble can exist also with the boy groups. One of the bigger problems was a group that lived of drips during the night during promotions. The other women in the video gasp because they weren't under this pressure to lose weight like that. In other words: anecdotal evidence and a problem of how Western media sees that new Asian culture (and yes that is a quote). Because the entertainment industry is like that (and sports, too). Thank you! 💜

Past those years were not smooth for them. They had, have precise and packed schedule for each of them. They also had, have pressure but the company always takes care of their mental health and to cope up with their mental health, 'Run BTS' is one of the stress relievers. They also go on staycations such as 'Bon Voyage' and 'In the soop'. They were on limited budget and could not even eat properly. They stated " we were literally starving back then". Even jin talked about their bon voyage series that they were provided limited food and he wanted more and was mad at the company for that. But the fact is they overcome all that by not give up hope, staying together and becoming supportive for each other while having hard work. Another good thing is they were given freedom for their work. So that they can work freely beyond boundaries which other companies were not allowing their groups. Their CEO is really genius. BTS are always allowed to talk about their problems towards company, which is cool. 💜

This series very often tells themes through comparison, showing how BTS originated in the Kpop structure and then diverged while also having unique characteristics from the beginning. I not only love it for the window into the rise of BTS but also for the cultural, social, and musical context. I have learned more about Kpop in general and am grateful since so much is said about Kpop (usually by people who are deriding Kpop). Also, you asked how groups are formed. Yes, idol groups are all formed, but Korean music is diverse and broad and outside the idol trainee system there are many other artists. Yet even some non-idol groups are formed through survival music competitions--think American Idol or AGT--like Kband LUCY.

One thing to know, is that the people in these interviews about the kpop industry. They all those who have made it. They show you and talk about the hardships, but these are the ones who debuted. And the majority of them are the ones whose groups were successful after debut. It's rare that they talk to the millions of kids that leave or get cut during trainee years. Or the groups that debut and are unsuccessful. Overall, these are usually the ones that thrive and/or enjoy what they are doing so much and have something the company and fans like enough to get through the hard times. Even the ones that come from well off families still have to put in the work. Even the ones that have no say in the music they do have so much work.

They didn’t have to do vlogs every night. They did it whenever they wanted to but since they were a smaller company without the funds to properly advertise themselves, they did that so that possible fans would see how the process was from their side of things and support them going forward. It was a rare thing to do back then but is now relatively popular (usually through pre-debut TV shows nowadays)
