BTS definitely changed the way Asians are viewed, especially with the Korean wave that followed - to this day - they changed the stereotypes, I mean Asians are portrayed in popular culture as nerds who have no sex appeal, and sometimes they are portrayed the same way as the Russians, they always have the role of bad antagonists. People don't realize it but it has a strong unconscious impact on how we perceive Asians, I'm proof of that. I live in Europe, in a culture that is relatively opposed to those coming from Asia, in Europe even if racism exists as everywhere, being neighbors with so many countries and the continent of Africa, Europeans are more exposed to other cultures than the people who live in the United States and Canada, but also in Latin America. Above all, like me, I have origins from two European countries so culturally I have a lot, then very young I was curious about Anglo-Saxon cultures, so I learned English very quickly, I also traveled and strangely, although I lived abroad, I had never been attracted by Asia (other than for the landscapes). The thing is that in Europe, there is not a large demography coming from Asia, we can only say that there is a community of Indians in the UK, but in the rest of Europe, we cannot say that there are many Asians. So despite the fact that Europe is quite open and has always been somehow connected to Asian cultures, we have a real lack in terms of demography, so it's hard to feel connected. So many Europeans are like I was, they have a real lack of curiosity towards Asian people, but less towards their cultures. I've never been in the style to adore an actor or a singer, to be a fan of them, that's why I was really surprised in 2019, when I discovered out of boredom BTS, I'm came across “Boy with Luv”, very catchy - what I expected from a boy band - but it was really the visuals (sets and members) but also the fact that they were dancing that impressed me, I've never seen that before. Then it made me curious and slowly but surely I fell into the spiral - and I'm delighted - and I discovered the feeling of being proud and emotionally attached to celebrities, which I did not understand before. BTS then, after that opened me to their culture, I'm still slowly learning their culture (history, customs) but also I devour everything that comes out of the Korean wave, whether it's k-food, k-beauty, k- dramas. And besides, I don't limit myself, I discover with pleasure what comes from China, Taiwan, Thailand, Japan. BTS really opened my eyes to a part of the world that was unknown to me. In addition to opening me up to the world of Asian cinematic art, I came to discover incredible productions and talented actors. And I'm happy that Asians are more on the scene since Parasite received an Oscar, they are featured in big Netflix productions but also blockbusters such as Marvel recently. Really it pleases me to see this expansion in our popular culture. I know that you make musical reactions, but maybe one day you will be tempted if you like films or series to discover some - according to your tastes - from Asia. Without forgetting that they really changed people's perception of Asian men. Now people see that they are attractive, sexy. And BTS are changing the standards, nowadays in the west people think it's ridiculous to call a man pretty or cute, but that's not the case in Korea, and this culture has spread to international fans, and I don't see the problem of saying that Jimin is very pretty, that RM is cute, or seeing them wear pink clothing or make-up. They had an unprecedented positive impact. I'm linking you to a pretty accurate video to react one day, from Asian Theory that talks a bit about these changes. "How BTS Made Asians SEXY Again" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vxH6qAwBHmQ.html Also, in this episode we talk about the racism that BTS has received from Americans, but let's not forget the media and the industry itself. Until today, BTS still suffers weekly attacks because of their ethnicity. Recently, it was Jimmy Kimmel, a show host, who allowed himself to compare BTS to Covid-19 twice in one week, without ever apologizing or being called out by people in the industry. He always had "jokes" about Asians who are ignored by people, and as a European, I see a lot of Americans putting forward non-racism towards African-Americans but almost never Asians when there are Asian communities in the US. The number of headlines and newspapers coming out criticizing BTS is mind-blowing. An Army said something very accurate a few days ago on Twitter, I never thought that by becoming a fan of a music group that I would fight against journalists, companies, media. Because no disrespect to other fandoms, but only Army is organized and willing to go against these institutions, I mean we did boycott campaigns, raids on problematic twitter accounts, trends to call out those who deserve it like journalists, media or celebrities themselves, we even have political raids and we spend our time highlighting BTS and their work (whether it's their fight against racism, violence, climate change). We have become an entity in ourselves, and we know that we hold power, and we follow the example of BTS. Honestly, I'm stressed for April, BTS sold out the Allegiant stadium four times in just a few hours in Las Vegas, plus they have 4 live-viewing at the same time at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. They will see more than 300k Armys in total during these four days, not even counting the fans like me who see them via online streaming (it was more than 500k Armys during the Los Angeles concerts last time). That's big numbers, selling out a stadium four times in the same city in such a short time, like we were told about these shows just a week before the online ticket sales started, people in general need more time for a notice. Not to mention that these tickets were sold out during membership pre-sales ONLY, so no tickets were available to the general public. All that to say that the Grammys this year, which have been disrespectful to BTS on more than one occasion, are going to be held at the same arena where BTS's live viewing will be held (MGM Grand Garden Arena), which is a flex. Either way, and even though I know they probably won't give BTS the Grammy (Lady Gaga is the favorite, again), at least they'll show the ridiculousness of this action of snubbing the biggest musical act in the world, because nowadays, no artists even Americans can sell four stadiums in the same city, I think the only act that will sell multiple times - twice - at Allegiant stadium is Bad Bunny, and again, it's for this summer (months in advance) and that's two concerts. In short, there is really a problem with how the media and the industry treats BTS. But, hey, I won't bore you more if you've read this far, I hope things will change, 2022 is very promising towards BTS, so I can't wait. Much love as always. 💜

I'm ready myself for Grammy disappointment too, i don't think BTS will win ( hopefully i'm wrong ), make me sad because they deserve it, i don't like seeing them sad and get hurt. I personally don't care about Grammy, BTS is perfect with or without Grammy but i know the boys want it so i want them to have it

@@bts_is7 I hope I'm wrong about the Grammys too, but I'd be surprised coming from them, they don't reward the most deserving but those who have contacts in the industry. In reality, all ARMYs don't care about the Grammys, we don't feel the need to see BTS win it, but it's something else for BTS, they want recognition from their peers, which I understand in their line of work. It's just that, unfortunately, their peers in America are racist. It just annoys me that in addition to proving that they are the best by flexing with the four concerts, still, it's not enough and we're still going to have to see them be disappointed in a room full of people who are not their friends. Fortunately, Army will be there in the audience to support them.

Whew. This was a long read and this is how I know BTS paved the way for mostly Asian cultures and not just exclusively to K-pop/content. I agree 100% my exposure had always been western music but after I got into BTS, it too expanded not only to K-culture but other asian cultures as well mostly Japanese and Chinese/Taiwanese content. BTS helped a lot of people expand their mindsets on what is out there in the world in terms of culture and with it comes understanding and appreciation for other countries' culture even if does not amount to total acceptance.

@@m.m.9175 When I meant their American peers, I meant the ones who are judges in Grammys. We know that the Grammys aren't fair but in the industry it's considered the highest praise when you are awarded by the judge's academy. So, what BTS truly wants it's to be recognized by them so - their Americans peers - in this situation. As for their next album, they never disappointed me, their albums always contains a large variety of genre, so I'm not worried, I don't think three English songs would really worry true Armys. Thanks for replying and sharing your thoughts. 💜

Their concert in Seoul may have no profit due to limitation seat (rule in Korea during pandemic), but both of BTS & Big Hit dont mind cz they will happy to meet K-ARMY ... Or the fact that they still use ARMY's gift even after several years (clothes, rice cooker, shoes, etc), it says a lot : "ARMY is part of our group!"

It's great to see Yoongi in in his happy place, the Genius Lab. It must be very gratifying to know that he has proved those who said that his determination to follow a career in music would bankrupt his family totally wrong. SUGA is a well respected producer who works with other artists as well as BTS. How many other artists write songs specifically for and about their fans? This is the key to their success. They genuinely love their fans as people not just the way they make their money. They're concerned about our health and well being as you can see through Magic Shop. The company arranges ARMY Time surprises for the boys at their concerts.

I can't believe how condescending people were to them. Every single question was about their social media presence. Like all they did was sit on twitter all day and have this online fandom and didn't work on the music at all. As if all their success accrued to that. It never felt to me like BTS were doing some special social media marketing to promote them, on the contrary they were using internet because tv shows were not accessible to them easily. Heck, they didn't even have instagram up until now.

When the argument was always "they're only famous because they post lot's of selfies", it still makes me so mad. Even now: "You can't even understand what they say", "It's foreign so it can't have any special meaning so why even look it up", "You must have some weird fetish to like them", "So you're into _asians??"_ Just how hard is it to belive that they can actually create good and meaningful music?? It makes my blood boil, because not only are they insulting BTS, they're also insulting us, when they assume like this without even considering actual quality.

MY DUDE LET ME TELL U. I was still on twitter when we were up for Top Social Artist the first 2 times and it was insane bc of how organised everyone was. I created a separate account to vote just so I wouldn't spam my friends who followed me on my personal account. I had a reminder to go into the BBMAs site and cast my 100 votes daily. We tweeted the hashtag so much the moment the votes opened that twitter removed the tag on the "Worldwide Trends" list. And I kinda believe that contributed to their complete overhaul of the "Worldwide Trends" section lmao (I believe it used to be automatically detected, but it doesn't seem like that anymore. It's way more controlled) Also, yeah. It was so incredibly sucky to go through the experience of other people undermining their success YET AGAIN. Armys were so pissed bc it felt like the boys never got to enjoy their successful moments fully before some idiots began bursting their bubble -- first in korea and now even here, and it has continued. I think it was these kinds of negative events that led to the organisation of ARMYs -- we wanted to come together to overcome the negativity and as much as possible, shield the boys from seeing such vile comments. So we began trending our own hashtags to drown them out and spammed with twice the positivity for every negative comment we saw. We had streaming parties to show off their music to the world. That's really what has always made me love ARMY. We know that it's a better use of our time to bring our boys up rather than bring the haters down. There are exceptions of course, like really immature or newer armys who don't understand how we support the boys in our own way. There is also a time and place to stand up for ourselves and tell the mean people that what they're doing is NOT OK. But most of the time, it's such a wholesome community and I love it :')

I think because I was like a part of the army, like in the community. I never felt shocked to see the amounts of votes they had during the bbmas. I wasn’t that active on twitter during the bbmas. I literally just made twitter that time to just vote for them. To see people question where the votes come from, I’m a bit shocked. Hahahaha. It’s really interesting how different being a kpop stan compared to a western artist’s fan, I’ve never been that involved or had a connection I have with the Kpop groups I love with these American artists. Of course there are downsides being a part of a toxic community, but honestly all the good people I’ve met and good memories we built outweighs all of that. So to all kpop fans out here, I love u all may we make more awesome memories and reach new goals for all the groups we stan, no matter how small or big they are.

1:05:07 When you were talking about how since BTS are are genuily good guys, so if one doesn't like their music they can just say that and move on, but strangely, it's such a weird phenomenon with BTS. It's either one gets to know them instantly go down the rabbit hole or the other extreme, instant racism and/or misogyny. There's barely an in between, it's so weird. Maybe it really has something to do with that subconcious belief of "asian's can't be successful" due to the lack of such representation literally everywhere, that when someone who as "learned" this through society sees an asian person in a successful position it clashes with what they "learned" so they think something must be foul there. That they couldn't have made it organically because it's not possible in their subconcious mind and that causes them to become so hateful without even knowing a single thing about BTS. Even my coworker, when I told her I like BTS, she didn't know who they were so I told them they're an korean music group. And she immediately made a face and questioned why I would even like them. She genuinely didn't even know they existed 5 seconds ago but she already took the "An asian artist being liked? That can't be"-route, and soley attributed it to me being attracted to asians, as if their music couldn't be of any actual quality and I couldn't actually have enough brain cells to identify good music, like the classic misogynistic "crazy, brainwashed fangirl" stereotype whose horniness for "hot guys" overpowers critical thinking. (Though with BTS it wasn't even "you must only like them because they're hot", that came later, in the beginning it was "you must have a fetish", again playing into the "an asian person can't be successful" thing.) If jumping to conclusions was an olympic sport, the world's elite would be made up of only people like that.

41:33 RM saying he was the most nervous he had ever been hits home. As the leader and the one with the pressure to not only respond to questions but translate them, so many first impressions of their group would be based on him and what he said. He did so well and made ARMY and his members proud. I can only imagine the shock he was in as he gave that speech and it was touching. I also just admire any time he seamlessly switches between languages. He does it in songs all the time but I think it’s even an amazing when he does it in normal speech too

And all stereotypes are harmful because it takes away the humanity of the person, you first think of them as that stereotype and based your opinion on that person before even getting to know them. Jim, You need some k dramas and k movies in your life lol. Obviously all Korean leads and it’s cool to get insights in to the Korean culture. Helps us to understand BTS more as well because they are so so proud of their culture. Parasite, Squid Game, All of us are Dead, Sweet Home, (OK I like the dark gory dramas), then there’s Navillera, Hwarang (Taehyung was in this), Itaewon Class…and many more. Racism gives me the shits….and while, yes, people can see the world and understand other cultures better IF they look for those things online…most people are fed by their algorithms which makes the attitude and diversity of mainstream media so important… the stuff that corporates feed the public… like news, chat shows, award shows, magazines, radio, movies and TV shows. ARMY has a constant uphill battle calling out both conscious and unconscious bias on those platforms. Loving your work, and the dream team!! as always!!! Have a great rest of the week!

You should definitely watch/read a bit about how perceiving asians as the model minority is also actually harmful. I'm far from being an expert in the subject, but the "smart" stereotype you've mentioned as a positive thing is kind of connected to it, too. Enjoying the content BTS creates is nice, but you kind of have to dig into more complex things like social studies, history, etc. from language, cultural references in the songs to the racism the group faces in the west.

Kpop fans and ARMY even until now and ARMY do not forget all the hate bts got during their careers especially when they were just starting, so most of the time u'll see ARMYs clapback in twt to other fandoms lol. Abt the racism it happens until now, a lot of western people connect them to covid, treated them as if they're covid itself just bcos they're asian.

It's just ARMY, it's an acronym. Not the army.
