Coolio's delivery was horrible but he had a point. They were a rap group, but very few of them had knowledge of black history and rap. Production did ask him to play it up a bit, but the boys had to learn a lesson many other kpop groups haven't learned to this day. Hiphop is not just an aesthetic, black people are not an aesthetic, we are real human beings with stories and our culture deserves the same respect you would show your own. Coolio was a great teacher and important to teaching them the respect for hiphop they have today.

Coolio was also deliberately hard on them for the cameras. There are a lot of takes where you see them having to quickly cut away and stuff because he was a second away from laughter, and stuff from behind the scenes footage where he was actually very excited to help the guys and trying to figure out what to assign them to really teach them stuff. And he was still supportive of the guys years after this show too. Honestly a lot of the people who were rude on AHL were directed to be that way by staff. (The kid who was being nitpicky with Jimin at the airport recently spoke out about this.) I'm more annoyed at the staff than anyone else in this lol

This!! I know it's hard to watch him "bully" but believe me if Coolio didn't care he wouldn't have agreed to take his time to do this. He did it because like he said, hip hop saved his life and he wants to make sure these kids who want to do hip hop know the roots and context and its importance in black history and culture. While I agree he went harder than was necessary, it's pretty clear it was played up a bit for the production. He has always been so supportive of our boys and believed in them from the beginning and continued to cheer them on long after they met (his Twitter posts celebrating their wins). May he rest in peace. 💜

This experience is one of the reasons why our boys are so much different from other idols. Instead of imitating what they see or hear, they actually dove deep into the culture and learned for themselves. They not only learned about the technical aspects of hip-hop, but they also learned the sense of community, the value of hard work and new found passion for their craft. It truly shaped them into the incredibly humble artists that they are today!!! And that’s why they’re so successful.

I agree now if we can only get the haters, solos, antis and shippers to do a deep dive into Korean Culture! It's a very Beautiful Culture and not singular when thinking or doing something. Using Bts as an example: they think collectively not selfishly...✌💜

True, the whole series had been quite difficult to watch. But it helped our boys with a lot of things - they've developed relationships with some authentic and genuine people - up to now they still work with them or are friends with them. They've also learned the importance of giving back, they developed more hiphop skills and even confidence. Our boys have learned a lot and I'm thankful this has been part of their journey. 💜 Also, think about American reality shows - they're about conflicts or the likes to make the show interesting. Very different from what we're used to with Korean reality shows that are just fun and wholesome. So maybe little of these are mostly scripted, and it made us feel very protective of them coz they're not used to this kind of treatment 🥹🤧 Thank you for sharing this vid with us! Borahae CCW 💜

Coolio was the only one that was rude towards them but he still offered them words of wisdom. Not everyone in life is going to be nice and some will fake their kindness, so there was a lesson to be learned there. The people who say they hate AHL ( American Hustle Life) are people that are out of touch with black/hip hop culture. BTS said themselves that they learned alot and do not regret the show but as you saw from the previous episode of Rise of Bangtan, Suga and RM are very in touch with hip hop culture . I believe that AHL helped give BTS a genuine understanding of soulfulness, hip hop culture, hip hop history, and rap music. I am greatful that Bang PD gave them that experience.

American Hustle Life was definitely an interesting experience for the boys and yes in the beginning Coolio was definitely hard on them but in my opinion, he wanted them to take this seriously and so as the show progressed he began to ease up on the boys for sure. It's just an interesting show but the part that I loved the most was their relationship with Tony and Nate🥺 (ps. ARMY, we need a Chimchim and Tony reunion ASAP🥺). I think the show really helped them respect the craft of hip hop more and gave them the necessary tools to be able to make authentic hip hop music so I respect it. Also one of if not my absolute favourite BTS albums, Dark & Wild was made during this trip and I just think it's so cool seeing their work ethic. Coolio came off as rude in the eyes of other people but what he did was open the eyes of bts, you see in Korea, a lot of people think of hip hop as an aesthetic, for example I’ve seen many Korean rappers do CA because they believe that’s looking “hip hop”, what coolio did was educate bts and that education that they received help bts get a better understanding of hip hop, bts took what they learned and applied it to their music and their outlook on hip hop changed, RM now has a better understanding of hip hop, the artists in that scene, the history, etc. This can be seen in the interviews he does nowadays. I’m sure some parts be of the show was acting but bts ended up learning many things.

They actually had translators in the room with Coolio. Coolio was impressed with them in fact. I think what he did was "okay" in terms of his questions to them and correcting them with their stereotypes. He doesn't hate V he was teasing (in a harsh way but still teasing). Some moments were pretty cringe and some of the treatment they got was horrible. I think that's why some armys hate the show but I think it was a great learning process for them in the Hihop journey its why they have so much respect for the black culture too. RIP Coolio

Coolio to BTS after AHL : "Boys, I already told you, the most important thing, keep on pumpin' your heart. Stay dedicated to your crafts, stay dedicated to your life." RIP Coolio. He may have looked harsh, but part of it was producers telling him to amp it up a bit, & the other reason was that he gave them tough love as a stern teacher, which to this day has made BTS what they are now, knowing a bunch more about hiphop culture than most in K-Pop & maybe also even a bit more than in K-Hiphop, partly because of people like Coolio, who was both a mentor & hype-up man. I don't have the numbers, but this is also why BTS probably has the most collabs with western hiphop artists as well, if not just total cumulative collabs with any western artists, not just only in hiphop. And BTS likely is the most prolific when it comes to global charities & donations, not that that's a flex necessarily, because of seeing the homeless in LA & grandmother alley in South Korea & also all the charities made in BTS' name by proxy as created by ARMY around the world. As sort of said in this reaction, AHL wasn't summer vacation, it was summer school. Perhaps you can react to the entire AHL later on.

They knew Tupac, Snoop Dogg, etc but they didn't know the background and history behind these artists, that is very very important. And Bts learning that is what makes them so different, most kpop artists don't know any of that shit, they say hip-hop is black and that's actually the first thing Jungkook said when they asked him what hip-hop is. I think Coolio was harsh and I definitely feel like he could have gone easier on V in the beginning, but I think he was coming from a place of feeling like they were joking around with his culture. A lot of people want to rap or wear "hip hop" styles, but don't even bother learning about the people, history, and culture behind it. If you're going to present yourself as a hip hop group, you should at least be able to answer a few questions about its history, and I think that's the point Coolio was supposed to make. If you watch the whole series he softens up a bit as it goes on and they seem to build mutual respect. I've always felt that BTS has had a strong connection to and respect for hip hop and its roots and that's one of the things that sets them, and specifically the rap line apart from other groups. I think the producers asked Coolio to play it up a bit, but I think his lesson was an important one.

You should also know some things are set up for tv. Gladly the one guy who was disrespectful with Jin and Suga got sacked. But if you saw Coolio's reality tv show at the time you would see that he filmed excerpts were he had the translator and other bts staff with him where they consulted about tasks, punishments etc to do for the show. So perhaps the staff hand more of a hand in it. AHL had some real good gems into the thoughts of the guys and it was great to see how they handled themselves in foreign waters but mostly that the promises they made on that show each of them actually fulfilled in future. Jin told us he gained more confidence and turned from being shy into WWH. Namjoon began to care less of what people thought about him and followed his heart. Our JK even said there that the moment he turns 18 he is going to he tattoos.😅 Not to mention that they even grew more in generosity than they already were.

Did you ever WATCH all of AHL?? Just so you know, V loved the experience. On their last day, V was the last one to pack up his things to go home. He was too busy writing in his journal about his time and esp his affection for one of the mentors, Nate. V said he would never forget his experience, even when he is a grandpa he will talk about it.

@@e0n555 Like you, we watched all the episodes, but his behavior was not right with V in the first place, he was a confident and happy boy, and Collio's behavior with V was terrible from the beginning, the kids were right, V was not a rap part at all, there was no reason to say so. Overhead of a group? V was able to be strong and strong because of his innate self-confidence, otherwise losing someone who has a good voice and his acts will hurt a lot and V is very kind and has a beautiful heart that does not say anything bad to Jane and Jimin and Jungkook didn't say that his behavior was completely predetermined, and at least if he humiliated him, he could tell about the goodness of his voice in the future. Just because bts raps in korean doesnt make it a completely different genre from hip hop in america lol. The genre originated from over here, and bts know that. They have alot of respect for the great Ogs from America .(korean rappers too of course). But they have alot of knowledge on the genre and culture in general. Yes BTS rappers were underground but the whole point of this show was for them to experience the culture a bit and learn more than what they already know. Yes they were a bit harsh it was hard to watch at times but the outcome was really great. This process was a great learning experience for them. Also, yes they didnt understand majority but they still knew a few english words and phrases at that time. So they weren't completely oblivious to what was being said.

Oof, gotta disagree with you on this one. Coolio--as a black artist who helped establish hip hop--has every right to ask a bunch of boys from another country if they understand what hip hop is. And I'm glad he did and they're glad he did because kpop is full of idols appropriating the aesthetic without giving credit or respect to its origin. BTS did it in the early days too. I am so proud of them for taking the steps to have these conversations, learn about where hiphop comes from and the culture that created it, and finding their own way to do hip hop authentically. It was totally fair for a hip hop OG like Coolio to come in, see these boys in their chains and baggy pants, and say "hip hop is serious to me and you have to know it's history." Like I'll never be nothing but grateful for the education Coolio gave them.

10:56 the entire reason they’re there is “to learn the hip hop culture in America.” The rapline are exceptional… but they were fans of hip hop music… they have no clue about the hip hop culture in the US and kinda the fact that a lot of hip hop artists come up with similar stories as coolio back when he was getting popular or whatever. He’s not wrong for asking them these hip hop questions bc that’s his job lol hip hop mentor. He’s not only asking the rapline… and they didn’t know the answers to the questions he asked them either…. Bc he’s talking about the history of hip hop. It’s basically like us army asking for older reactions so you could see the journey from the beginning and the big highlight moments that were crucial to it becoming what it is today. With his background and him literally talking about the history of something that changed his life… I can see why he was thrown off by v saying turn up lol he made him do push ups which is just like in sports you have to do push ups if you’re late or something… he showed them he was serious by having v do push ups… but have to remember that he didn’t know them at all before this or who they were… so they don’t know these are the most kind, sweet, silly, loving and goofy boys ever. Like you have to look from his side too.. v was hard to understand at first so Coolio may have thought he was mocking him and the. The rest of the boys were laughing.. he could have felt defensive not understanding how they are too. Doesn’t excuse kinda lashing out towards little tae tae … but he’s human too.. or was before he died . tae said turn up the whole rest of the trip all the time lol he clearly was not remotely phased by it. Taes the most confident person I’ve ever seen… he wasn’t effected by the push-ups lol Also remember this is a reality show guys… typical Korean reality shows like this have a lot of scripted parts but a lot that’s not scripted also… but they had two mentors .. main mentors… coolio and warren g… coolio was first and the serious , tough love approach…. And warren g was second and definitely a more patient and kind mentor for the boys to end the show in a good place which it did.

Hi 👋🏾 I don’t think Coolio (RIP) treated them well, but hip hop is FROM American culture. Korea very much liked to deny this fact but also tried for a very long time to emulate hip hop culture by copying BLACK culture which is not ok in the slightest (wearing braids because “that’s hip hop!” even though my grandma wears braids, etc.). Coolio was used to tough love and I can completely understand why he may not have had a lot of respect for them in the beginning. He probably thought they didn’t actually care about the culture they were participating in. (I don’t exactly blame him since their fashion style on stage was extremely cringey at the time 😅.) He learned as time went on that this wasn’t true. A lot of people have this same revelation when it comes to BTS. Unfortunately, a lot of Kpop artists still do this mockery of hip hop that Coolio assumed they were doing.

Guys Hip Hop is very important to a LOT of people, especially Black Americans because it describes a lot of our stories and it was an outlet for our pain for such a long time, so if BTS came to America to learn about this culture, then it was very important to be respectful. I understand that Coolio came off as harsh but that’s how a lot moments of Hip Hop really are. I really suggest watching this whole series because while it is HIGHLY cringey, BTS learned so much more than any of their peers or hip hop artists outside of America would ever learn. They carry that respect and humbleness with them until this day. Another side note is that BTS was only really known amongst kpop stans at that time so no, Coolio probably didn’t know their full story, he just knew they wanted to learn about Hip Hop. Also, Coolio actually passed away last year and BTS sent their condolences.

This episode of Rise of Bangtan is just a snippet of what the show covered, and it left out some REALLY important stuff. You honestly need to watch all the episodes to really understand their experiences on the show. For example, this does don't reference Dante (with good reason). Or their " work experience" and you really need to see that. Or shy little Jungkook running away from one of the women at the music video shoot - my heart still goes out to him. He didn't want to participate in anything and was negative thru their assignment. Even the other mentors didn't know what was going on with him (when fans asked them on their sm later). For me, that guy and the ep1 prank were the worst parts of the show and the only parts I wouldn't mind being cut out out. As much as I dislike American Hustle Life, it was probably the most beneficial thing that their company could've put them through early in their career. One of my main issues with a lot of Kpop/hip-hop is that many idols are willing to walk the walk, but not talk the talk. They'll wear chains and rap and sing without acknowledging or knowing about the rich history and culture behind hip hop. In a way, I sort of agreed with Coolio in how he takes hip hop seriously (NOT in his methods though, still kinda rude). Hip hop was started as a way for Black folks to vocalize and unite in their struggles with the system and their personal problems. It's evolved since then, but that's still a core value of the genre. That's why I respect BTS so much, because they took this [very cringey] experience and applied it to their work ethic. They all constantly acknowledge the Black artists and other artists of color that influence their various styles. It's a complete 180 from what most of the Korean music industry does.
