The “nae” is “내” but the way that Koreans position their tongues when they pronounce the “n/ㄴ”, it sounds like “d” sometimes so that’s why “noona/누나” (male referring to an older female as sister) sounds like “doona”, your welcome to whoever needed this and read this comment :)

Peachyotaku5 Anime You don’t roll your tongue. When you’re pronouncing ‘ㄴ’ you don’t say it like you would in English yes, it’s pretty much the same sound as the letter ‘N’ but when you’re pronouncing ‘ㄴ’ you slightly bite your tongue, not roll it. :)

There is a similiar thing in japanese where they dont pronounce R sounds but they dont have the same L sounds as us. Try saying R and L and get a grasp of how those two sound differ and then try to find a sound in the middle of those two try doing the same with the N and D sound.

@@KayYisoo yes, it sounds like dae, not nae. D in English is pronounced by bringing the teeth together, and pushing the tip of the tongue against the roof of the mouth. Of course, I am from the western US, so it may vary based on region or nation. I would hear it more like Bris I think because I am from Utah which has a similar regional dialect.

It’s not rolling your tongue.. it’s just a quicker flap. It doesn’t sound like D at all when your ears are trained for quicker sounds. We just relate it to our native language at first and try to put the most recognizable sound to it. It’s a ㄴ no matter how quick it’s spoken.

One thing to keep in mind with romanisation of Korean is tht they are the closest approximate sound. The reason why "ㄴ" sounds more like a "d" sometimes is because its actually between an english "n" and "d" sound, not as clear as an "n" or as sharp as a "d". There are a few other sounds that have approximate english letters as well, like: ㄱ("k" or "g"), ㄷ("d" or "t"), ㅂ("b" or "p") and ㅅ(mostly "s" but sometimes can form a "t" sound). English isn't phonetic which can make stuff like romanisation of other, more phonetic languages harder but the way I try to learn is that the speaker is always more correct than the translated text so it's best to follow their lead.

To explain your question, the reason the Korean word 네 [nae] sounds more like dae is because the sound is pronounced more in the back of the mouth, kind of creating a sound that is simultaneously an N sound and a D sound. It's the way you say the word nae in the back of your mouth without opening your mouth much that defines the sound.
