He was saying that he pretending to be somebody that he is not. So now he can't seem to find him true self

Rm wrote this when he got out the hospital. He wanted V to express the lyrics and when he first showed him it, he was worried that he wouldn’t like it but V did.

Hi Bris, my interpretation is that the song is about the BTS V vs Kim Taehyung . The ice represents the wall he is forced to put up seeing that he is a public figure. If you look back at the lyrics he speaks about him running to the lake (fame and BTS) and he sees his reflection in the lake. The reflection he sees is his real self. He mentions he reaches out to cover his reflection's mouth (the real Tae) and he says don't say anything. Then he goes on to ask himself if his voice is even real- I assume because he is a public figure he can't have freedom of speach because well you know how the ugly folks can be. He said he dumped himself into the lake (remember the real Tae is in the lake as the reflection) and he buried his 'voice' for him, he also questioned if that was the right thing to do. This means that he gave up being a normal person and having a normal life to be BTS V. he also mentions "what was I supposed to do back then?" He was very young when he joined the band and I am sure he doesn't regret it but really, a young person like that making that kind of decision, he probably didnt realise what he was giving up. I am sure with this concept you can re read the lyrics and understand exactly what I am saying bow but to add one last thing which I think was heart breaking, he said "have I lost myself or have I gained you?' Meaning he gave up being his real self but in turn he became V and with that he gained ARMY and I don't have to tell you how much all members love ARMY. This is just how I understood the lyrics I hope it helped..

I honestly think that RM was trying to say he changed a lot of himself to create this face of BTS. In the episode of 6 for Burn the Stage, he talked about how he’s only RM or Bts and that he isn’t Namjoon. It comes off very self reflecting.

With BTS, one should always assume the lyrics have a much deeper meaning. Based on what the whole LOVE Yourself series is about, I think it's about the two sides of oneself. One part of yourself who wants to be free from whatever it may be "being your complete self" vs the part everyone sees and that part of you that keeps you from completely being your honest about who your and your true self. It's the dichotomy of two sides of yourself that is at odds with each other.

Ok so i was on Twitter and ppl are saying the lyrics are talking about depression. I can see that. It relates to the coldness ex frozen lake. But it also talks about SPRING DAY will come again. I believe that the spring represents hope. Just my theory. Dont be too harsh on me fellow ARMY. 💜💜

To me based purely on these lyrics, there’s clearly an imagery of a frozen lake, where a part of V is trapped underneath it. I’m thinking he’s been asleep underneath the ice and then the ice starts to crack, making the unfamiliar sound that wakes him up. The part of V trapped is represented by his voicelessness, one one can hear this part of him because he buried it. To the self sacrifice part you speak of, to me it would make sense if something so painful happened that he needed to busy that part of himself and those memories, trap and numb them underneath the ice, but as the lyrics say, despite it all he can still feel the “phantom pain”, and the pain is still real despite how he’s buried it. This is why a part V/the narrator is still above the lake and he can go look at his own face, part of his self, that he buried underneath it. Finally the songs talks about how spring will come, which is a hopeful thing, it means the ice will crack and V can be reunited with this part of himself again, he can finally get his voice back. But it also mean he will have to face all this pain that he buried underneath the ice to escape from. The most puzzling lyric to me in this song is the “have I lost myself or have I gained you” line, because it’s the only only time he refers to someone else being involved in this. On one hand, V has definitely lost part of himself, the part he had to bury in the lake, but if he had to do that to save someone else, a self sacrifice, that is what could tie it more directly into the theories, where V’s character murders his father, a massive loss of innocence and a traumatic memory that he could have wanted to bury, in order to save his sister and mother from being abused by him, as far as I’ve understood. So this could be V having taken all the pain from that and buried it deep in the lake, letting ice freeze over it, but in doing so he loses part of himself. Hope this makes sense to whoever ends up reading it.

RM wrote these lyrics. I heard that he wrote these lyrics right after he was discharged from a hospital. Knowing how much a deep thinker he is and how sensitive and melancholic he gets. ....i know for a fact these lyrics reflect what was going on in his mind back then. This is what I think this song is about and I am guessing strictly based on many interviews RM did in the past. RM said in many interviews that his biggest dilemmas are dealing with the gap between his public persona, RM of BTS, and his real self, Kim Namjoon. He said there were not enough times for him to live as Kim Namjoon ever since he became the leader of BTS. He normally spends most of his days as his public persona RM and is asked to behave accordingly. RM is still part of Kim Namjoon but RM is often not the same as his real self. He said in many interviews that there were many times he often has to act as the leader of a group but he is still young, vulnerable, inexperienced, not as wise and strong as most people think he is. There is a lot of inner struggles in his mind but he often has to wear a mask in front of camera and he doesnt know how much he can be honest in front of camera. He wants to communicate but he doesnt know how much he can open himself in front of cemamera and in front of the public. So he often feels like he is wearing a mask to become his public persona RM of BTS. He is just a young man who can be puzzled in many situations but always expected to act according to people's expectation. I think the person thrown away into the winter lake is his real self, Kim Namjoon. He gave up or had to throw away a lot of his real self to become his public persona, the leader BTS. The thick ice that has formed on the lake seems like a sort of wall or barricade that hides his true self, Kim Namjoon, preventing it from revealing. He gets confused whether he lost himself, Kim Namjoon, or gained himself, RM of BTS. He sometimes doesnt know who he is anymore bcz he has been trained many years to become and live as his public persona, RM. Him looking at the frozen lake with his face hidden underneath is him trying to reflect on who he is really. He knows one day when spring comes the ice will melt and flow away and then his hidden real self will surface.

I think it tells about dual identity of person as an Idol star and an average regular person. Being an famous idol star has to hide true feeling and struggles and pretend. I think in this song "I" mean true himself and "You" mean another identity as an idol star. and sing about the pain between two sides.

I suppose it's about the pain of separation, of breakups and such. How you want to cry out but you can't seem to find your voice. How you give so much of yourself in a relationship and receive nothing in return. How your significant other either destroys you and makes you feel like nothing or vice versa.... That's my theory. when he finally realizes what is going on he understands that the ice around his heart that was there due to the past relationship is slowly melting away.

I am glad i read some of the comments before posting as i would just be repeating what some have already said. The lyrics to me do tall about the masks we wear...and people seeing us the way they want to...and not what we are. The flower he holds is called a smeraldo (it goes way back to when BTS debuted- so this has been in the works for a LONG time)... But the smeraldo flower's meaning is the truth i couldn't tell. and was 'discovered' on June 12, 2013 by a peraon name TeStesso (in means yourself in Italian)... There are old theories about it...and many old armies will be bringing back the smeraldo theory I am sure...

In the beginning, he was in a dream where he heard the unfamiliar sound. He sacrificed himself for someone by throwing himself in the lake. The lake was frozen in winter, he was still in the ice frozen when he woke up. When he says, “I see my face in it.” He ran to the lake and saw himself frozen in the ice but it’ll melt away when spring comes. He’s asking if he made the right decision to make that sacrifice for the other person or not. RM wrote the lyrics, in my opinion, he’s talking about himself. How he’s always felt like he can’t really show who he really is in the public because he’s an idol and he doesn’t want anyone to judge him for who he is. That’s why at the end it asked if he made the right decisions because he feels that his voice is not there anymore. This is just my opinion but it’s a very sad song about sacrificing ones real self for the benefit of others. RM is my bias as well so I definitely relate more to him and I can see what he’s trying to tell us here. No matter how big the sacrifice, if you’re doing it for the right reasons than it’s okay but always put yourself first and make sure you’re happy! Hope this makes sense 😅

I associated the story told in the lyrics with the myth of narcissus. all the boys have talked about dealing with themselves while having to show a "perfect" image. like in the myth, tae sees his perfect self reflected in the lake and the voice of the reflection can be the voice in his mind telling him bad things like how he is so vain and cares so much about money etc etc. as he reach his hand to cover the mouth of the reflection (cause he feels attacked by those thoughts), he ends up falling into the lake and can't get out. since it's winter, an ice layer is formed above him, trapping him in the frozen lake where his own twisted self is, which can be a sign of giving in and accepting that he really changed. finally, the song ends on an optimistic note saying that spring will come, the ice will melt and he'll be able to get out of the lake aka change himself for the better and be less vain.

This song kind of reminded me of PTSD in a way. The pain in his throat could be the pain you get when you're trying to hold back tears, Also the recurring sound that seems to frighten him and prevent him from going to sleep could be different memories or sounds that remind him of a past experience/s and that could be another reason he's trying to cover his ears from it. Another way I thought about it would be not coming to terms with the truth. Deep down he knows the truth, but he's unwilling to admit it, the pain in his throat could be from guilt or stress, and the recurring sound could be all the clues pointing to said truth, or different people unintentionally talking about it(basically anytime something remotely close to the truth comes up) he is trying to shield himself from these sounds to protect whatever it is he is trying to protect by not admitting the truth(ie: himself, friendships, people hurt by 'the truth').

To me, when he sang that he threw himself into the lake, I think he threw his 'real' self, and locked his self away beneath the ice. So when he looks into the lake he sees his own face. Which means right at that moment he's not wearing his 'real' face. Then he silences his 'true' voice because he doesn't want to know. "In the end spring will come." It's inevitable that in any relationship his 'true' self will emerge and be revealed to the other. It's the dilemma we all face. When we love someone else we try to become someone the other will love back... We hide our flaws and pretend to be someone we're not. This makes us anxious in our relationship. There's always the underlying fear that the other person will leave when they find out who you truly are. Thus, we/you don't deserve love. Yes, to me, this is a very sad song. I'm not sure the lyrics connect, but the visuals really do. Everyone keeps looking at only one definition of singularity. Singularity is also a term in physics which describes a black hole. (Remember V's solo in DNA where he's standing over the universe? There's a black hole in that scene.)

It’s a song about sacrifice and self reflection. Having a dream and then living in the reality of achieving that dream is realizing it’s a life that comes with trade offs where you have to give up being your true self in order to stay there. It becomes a struggle between pleasing yourself or pleasing others. The new dream becomes not letting yourself drown in those sacrifices and finding a way to balance the choices you make to live without losing sight of who you really are.

What I took from it was that when he looks back into the lake he actually sees his body frozen in it, and when spring comes it’ll melt and he’ll be free again

I like the idea of this being about self reflection and losing yourself (possibly the members having their true self and stage self). RM reflecting on himself etc. On the other hand it also fits into the story continuing from Hyyh. V’s “dream” he is recalling is his past life that Jin fixed, and hes realizing that something was sacrificed either way. Himself or Jin. The title singularity also fits this as the two realities are starting to blur and come together. The "lake" referenced V jumping off the scaffolding/balcony sacrificing himself in the previous reality. In this new reality where Jin seems to be taking his place, V realizes this isn't right. He sees his own face in the lake and realizes that this reality isn't the original. In the end I think the tear on his mask is like a counterpart to when Jin started to crack in BST. The line "did I lose myself or gain you" may also give some insight into this. That's about all I can think of off the top of my head. I absolutely love the song and video, and an engrossed by the story for ages.

I think it's after he thrown himself in lake in the prologue. He is expressing his feelings at that time that ice frozen over the lake and as he is died now he ran to the lake to look and see himself buried in water. Mask at the end with black tear represents death

To me it's like the lake symbolizes the relationship between two people, and with him using phrases like "I dumped myself into the lake", "I threw myself away"", and I buried my voice for you", it's almost as if he's regretting a failed relationship (not necessarily romantic). This also goes well with the MV, how it looks like he's trying to get away from the mannequin he's dancing with and such.

The lake is a beautiful metaphor. He buried himself in the lake which froze with a thick layer of ice in the winter. Thus in the hard times, he held his opinions or even himself back. But he heard the sound of the ice cracking, meaning that he is trying to break out of that shell and that he is trying to accept his own opinions and sharing them. In the spring, warmer times, the ice will finally melt away and his personality can finally bloom. He won't be tied down by the harshness of the (winter) world anymore. -> Love yourself (=accept yourself, appreciate and respect your opinions)

He’s also talking about how his emotions are frozen over and how maybe someday he’ll find another love the might melt his frozen heart or emotions.......... it really is just a metaphor of comparing an emotional romance to a cold winter lake.

"Love is giving something you don't have to someone who doesn't want it"- Lacan. I think this quote explain the whole lyrics. It's not about love in a romantic way but idealize someone or something and in the end, loose ourselves.

This song is meant to be about how people hide themselves and put on disguises that aren't themselves. This can be represented by the several use of masks in the music video, and the lyrics referring to his voice as true self, and throwing it deep under the lake, and having a thick layer of ice form over it. The lyrics "I run to the lake, I see my face in it," show that he's looking at himself which he buried and sealed away. There's many interpretations, but they all have one thing in common which is to love yourself. The albums Love Yourself: Tear shows all the bad things that happen with love, and is portrayed through the songs. In this video it shows how Taehyung hides his real self and puts on a mask which is not his to please a certain person, or maybe many other people. RM said for this album, "If you love someone, and you can't love yourself, the love isn't real." something like that.

my analysis: Tae in this video shows a lot of symbolism from the Greek story of Narcissus, as the Billboard article says, just to point out. He talks about falling into this cold lake which then freezes over, its a metaphor of being consumed by loneliness and depression. He said in the beginning he 'woke up', hence he began to realize his singularity. When he was talking about running to the lake and seeing his face in the cold, frozen lake after, he realized and understood his pain, loneliness, and ‘Singularity”. “But in the end, spring will come someday” is a reference line to Spring Day, which was about friendship and what comes after the ‘winter’, a metaphor for depression. To summarize, the song is about realizing his loneliness, hence the title, and it paints the picture of a man who is ‘loved’ like in the beginning, it shows, yet that is what makes him question if he is detached from others. The end of the song provides reassurance he will make it through because if became self aware. sorry if this is scattered.

What my intepretation is this song is about inner pain of self. If you look the lyrics and make it a story you can see when the lyrics said i wake up because of that unknown sounds. Its like he had a dream. He always have that dream everyday. We could see repetation again and again abou that sound. "Today that sound ringing again". I interpret that sound is temptation to him to become another person, that sound give him chance like lyrics said in methapor way.. its crack sound of frozen lake.. like you can see a hole in the crack frozen lake. My theory of this song is because of the new album "Love Yourself 'Tear'" that at the start he puts his *Own* hand in the clothing or mannequin and how he pushes away from his *own* hand so hes pushing away from himself and because of all the masks those are different versions of himself. and in one part of the video he hands out a flower to the masks and they turn away. or its talking about a death. a black tear represents death and at the end hes wearing a mask and a black tear is running down the cheek, representing 'Love yourself *"Tear"*. So i think its about accepting yourself and loving yourself.

BTS lyrics are always deeper than what you may think and can be interpreted different ways. In most cases they seem to not only fit in with the Bangtan Universe but also with the songwriter’s and singers personal story. In this case, the narcissus/fallen angel narratives can be seen. But also I think this song express RM’s (and idols in general) need to hide and suppress who they really are. One scene I think is particularly moving is when Tae pushes all the masks, or different parts of his personality “down”, and they disappear. Being an idol one must put on a facade and hide their true thoughts feelings and voice in order to be “loved”.

I understood it like he was inside the water, like the winter lake he was literally thrown in then froze, so one part of him is inside the water, and when the other part of him runs to the lake, he sees his face, because his other side is looking at him from inside the water, under the ice. he says in the end the ice will melt so he will manage to get all of himself back, but for now he just doubts everything and hurts.

heres my little insight: "have i lost myself or have i gained you." this song is about the pain and sacrifices of a relationship, or becoming famous. perhaps in this relationship/fame that namjoon wrote about, he(I, me, myself) changed so much for a person, the fans, fame(you) that he doesn't even recognize himself. a "thick ice" formed over his past self/true self and when he looks back, or tries to go back to being his past self, he cannot reach it; or in the case of it being fame, they hide away their true selves and put on a "mask" of charm, of good looks in order to keep that fame, keep an image the they created. "if i shouldn't have thrown myself away," really speaks out to me. it's like, should these boys at such young ages have shown their true selves since the beginning, so that when the fame and fortune over took them, the world would truly know and accept them for them? or should they have locked away these feelings/emotions they hold, form a barrier "thick ice" around their true selves that would suit the image that the media and companies would prefer. the mask is a very big symbol, and at the end of the music video, we see the "tear" drip down on the mask but if you look hard enough, you'll notice that taehyung himself sheds a tear. don't know if they did that on purpose for the album "Tear" or for more symbolism. overall, this song was verrrrry well written and fitted towards taehyungs voice and style and i hope singularity gets all the love it deserves :)

When i listen to this song on my ipod i imagine Narcissus singing this to himself in pain and regret, i know that narcissus was probably too infatuated with himself to realize his mistake but if he were to ever regret loving himself too much i would imagine him crying & singing this while staring at himself in the lake unable to even move. would make a great scene in broad way. edit: i know the lyrics don't really describe this, just the emotions he has while singing really feels like he's crying to death. And the phantom pain lyric really gets me it's so deep!

I feel like, basically its about losing yourself in love. Giving up your own identity to gain the love you wanted. The sound he hears and the phantom pain that won't go away is his true self and his subconscious reminding him he is living a lie. When he looks at his reflection in the water its like he falls in love with his own image he has created. He wants to force that unfamiliar voice away. But like the spring that melts the ice away, it can't last forever because he can't live a lie and any love based on his false self is fake love. That's my take on it in a nutshell. My first attempt at a fan theory😂: The song is an intro to the single that's dropping soon called "Fake Love". So just like "Serendipity" introduced the theme of "DNA" (the euphoric, all consuming, and maybe a little naive idea of their love being fated/serendipitous), "Singularity" talks about a relationship where he's trapped (frozen) in a facscade in order to continue to be loved and is wondering how long he can keep it up as well as fearful of when it all melts away ("the sound of something breaking"... the sound of the ice cracking as it melts and his mask falls apart) and shows the real him, will he still be loved? (Remember at the end of the video where he's wearing the mask and his earring says "loved", it symbolizes that he feels he can only be loved if he hides his true self). There were overtones of this concept in the "Outro: Her" from the last full length album where the lyrics basically talk about trying to be whatever they need to be so they can be loved by Her because she makes them feel a version of what they perceive as "happy".

For some reason the beginning of this song seems like the Stigma story to me. It seems like when he's talking about his troubled home life (in the storyline ofc) in the first few lines with things breaking and having trouble sleeping. I feel like once it gets to the chorus he finally manages to fall asleep and is dreaming.

I love listening to Serendipity and than Singularity knowing that RM wrote both of them and listening to how different they are

(LONG PARAGRAPH AHEAD) Rember at the end of the BS&T music video when the colors started coming from Jin's face? The same thing happened to Taehyung at the end of singularity but in his case masks were often seen in Taehyung's scenes. Masks are often used to cover something you don't want people to see, and Taehyung has a lot, this could mean he has different sides or "faces". As for Jin's scenes, we often see Lillies. Lillies are a symbol of Death, in addition, Jin will often be alone in a room with lilies. This may indicate that Jin is no longer alive. Now, looking back at the BS&T MV. Apples are a symbol of temptation. In one of the scenes in the MV Jin is seen at the head of the table, the rest of the members are seen with apples on their plates as if about to consume the apples, or follow after Jin. At this point, Jin starts looking around and realizes what he's done, but it's too late. So, to save the members, he has to give up something such as his happiness life or freedom. At this point Jin? lets go of a balloon. Balloons often stand for happiness or freedom while RM says " He too was a tempter." as inreferring to Jin.

it feels like it's about depression. I don't know why I get that feeling, but he sang about that spring will come someday and the ice will disappear. I don't know but that is what I think.

The ice is the “mask” Taehyung is wearing to hide his true self. So he’s pretending to be someone else for this person he loves. When he’s looking over the frozen lake, there’s a connection between him and the story of Narcissus who fell into the lake and died for loving (himself) too much. Taehyung reaches out his own hand to cover his reflection’s mouth, to hide his voice. The unfamiliar sound Taehyung hears in the beginning of the song is singularity or loneliness.

RM was really sick in the hospital when he wrote this. He might've been writing about how he felt, and with this lyrical genius self was able to create yet another masterpiece.

Namjoon writes amazing songs. This fit V so well.

the sene with flowers are similler to ophelia paintings. so i assume he is singing about the pain which comes from kind of blind love which made him not being himself(mask, not having a voice,seeng himself under the ice.. ect). thus it is about love yourself.

Maybe this song is about how BTS had to give up alot of themselves once they reached fame. The frozen lake is where the real versions of themselves is buried, I get that from the visuals in the mv. YES RELATES TO SOME OF THEIR OLD SCHOOL STUFF!!!

i saw on twitter someone said it reminded them of the myth of narcissus. basically this guy was cursed to fall in love with the first person he saw but the first person he saw was his reflection so he fell in love with himself. since the theme of this album and the last is love yourself this could be the extreme negative side of loving yourself?

It’s about how he has to put on a different persona in his life due to his idol status. He is RM, the reflection and the person thrown in the lake is Namjoon. He is looking at his “alter ego”. He is covering the mouth of his other side therefore loosing his voice as he has to be this person now. But he is questioning has he actually lost himself (Namjoon) or has he gained himself (RM) he is saying the feeling that he is having currently won’t last forever, that a new (spring) day will come and he will understand. He ends with he wishes he knew about this back then (in the beginning when he was starting out as an idol) The frozen lake represents an entrapment of himself - Namjoon has been put “on ice” so he cannot speak. I believe that V was chosen to sing this as I think he understands the whole meaning of the song. His upbringing was very simple with his grandparents on a farm. You see in real life videos Taehyung is a complete goon and is always being extra but when V comes out he is completely different. Also only Taes voice can really do this song justice. This is in no way bashing the others, they could have all sang this beautifully of course but the sound and Taes voice match and you can feel the emotion and it makes you hurt - he was meant to sing this.
