Most of the time, Burbot do swallow it. Gobs of worms or chunks of cutbait, kinda like fishing for Channels...but I love them through the ice. Heavy glow jig(half to 3/4 ounce) and a chunk of sucker...bang the bottom fast at first, then slow jig one rod and dead stick another. In early February, they spawn in shallow rocky flats. We usually position ourselves on a shallow point, around 10-12 fow, on a deep shelf line. These fish generally swim in deep waters, so if you can find a transition, where that 12 fow goes to 20 rapidly, and that 20 goes to 40...and so on...you will be at a good starting point during their run. These fish are incredibly beautiful, strong, and tasty!!! They get the same rapp as Channel Cats...oh bottom feeders...but just like a Channel Cat, they are voracious predators. They strike like an eel...Out of nowhere!!! Sure, an easy meal of sucker meat is ideal, but I catch them with minnows and crawdads full in their bellies. Slimy as a pike, more delicious than a walleye, and a native staple of North America... Cool video.
Thank You! I had so much fun I am going back tomorrow! Great tips! They are awesome tasting for sure! I almost have the cook video done so it will be out soon! I hope to get a few and have some in the freezer. I ended up with that one and lost three in 2 hours! I know what i was doing wrong and plan on slaying them! Happy Fishing!
Hey Mark, what a cool looking fish. Burbot eh? Now we have bowfin a plenty around here. We once mistook one for a bass and my brother in law almost lipped it..NOT That was a pretty good one. My bucket list fish would be a flathead.
If you're ever up this way I might be able to help you get on that Flathead! I have the Burbot cook video almost done. It was DELICIOUS! Happy Fishing and Cooking!
my bucket list feesh are walleye, goliath grouper, tarpon, redtail catfish, peacock bass, snakeheads and big blue cats. I got a few bucket list fish this year a 36" northern pike, my first flatheads and a burbot
Congrats on the ones you caught! That's awesome! Flathead are probably my favorite fish to chase! You have an awesome list too! My next one is a 50+" sturgeon! I will be chasing Pike this winter on the ice! Happy Phishing!
Come up here for a week after Labor day! We can get you one from shore! Get ready to cast your arm off! Salmon are the best fight pound for pound from shore on med tackle! Happy Fishing buddy!
Congrats Mark. I have never caught a Burbot. Not sure they are anywhere near me. But growing up on the ocean I have caught a few Cusk. I caught a bowfin a while back that was about 10 lbs. He wrapped himself up in my net so bad that before I could untangle him he ate his way through the net. I was less than pleased. LOL I think my bucket list freshwater fish would be a Peacock Bass and a Clown Knifefish. And I loved the outro music.
Yea this Bowfin was mean! I had to have a death grip on it for that picture! Head on down to Florida I am sure you can get both fish down there! Thanks for watching my friend! Happy Fishing!
Very cool! Mark you have introduced me to fish I had no idea existed. Good luck with the rest of your Bucket List! I can't wait to see what you catch next!
