Those Northerns were beautiful, especially the lead. It's ashame the Challenger couldn't make a run, but it, too, was very beautiful to see.

I see in the Auto market now with the EV cars just around the corner we have the same situation when diesel and electric replaced steam , when you look at all the incredible engineering and maintenance and energy and water supplies needed to run these one can understand why they switched , and the day will come when we look at ICE cars and say , man they certainly put a lot of effort and engineering into those old auto's .

What beautiful engines. I would love to know a bit more of the phenomenons that occur in railroad fire-tube boilers. In this video I clearly saw pressure reliefs lift when the operators reduced throttle, but I'd love to know what else happens. Do you see water level change with steam demand, due to the increased boiling? What sorts of boiler water treatments (if any) do you use? What sorts of thermal limits are there, ie max temperatures, heat-up/cool-down rate limits, etc?

@759Highiron
@759Highiron 4 года назад
The Lackawanna Northern and the Georgetown in Western Northern are both locomotive kits produced by Little Engines when I owned Little Engines I took on the Monumental task of redesigning the locomotives and redoing all the original patterns from 1947 so they would produce the fine models that they do today bringing once again the glory back to This Magnificent machine do a RU-vid search for Lackawanna 1637 and you will find more magnificent short clip videos of that engine in action pulling 35 and 37 car trains

tim sering in this scale- all the rods are made of steel. It would be foolish to make them out of anything else. With enough force you can break pretty much anything

What are the speed limits on most live steam railways? (7&1/4"-7&1/2" gauge) Thinking of designing my own 0-4-0 diesel shunter and wanted an idea for hydraulic pump ratios. Also can anyone tell me what the axle load limit usually is? I was wanting to build it from 3/8" or 1/4" steel plate for really good traction.
@jordanmrivera
@jordanmrivera 4 года назад
My club generally runs at 5-7 mph. Your axel load limit depends on the material/thickness you make it out of. For an 0-4-0 you shouldn't really run into the limit, but it also depends on what scale you make it.

The farmed out construction of even a modest 4-6-0 locomotive will cost at least $12,000-$15,000. With larger engines pushing or surpassing $60,000-$100,000+. 7-10 of these engines are built by the owner and they could take 5-10 years to complete. Assuming one has the machining skills for the work.

The locomotives are works of art, and I enjoy seeing them run very much. But the people riding and operating them ruin the whole thing. Can't these locomotives be operated by radio control in order to provide a more realistic sight.
@TheSteamChannel
@TheSteamChannel 6 лет назад
nemo zilch if you spent ten years and $20,000-$30,000+ to build one...you’d better believe the builder will be with his creation. Operating it is the entire point in this scale.

I think a lot would be lost if these magnificent engines were merely remotely operated. People made them, and people are at the heart of these wonderful miniature railways.

how much money was it to get the G&W Northern? like how much was it to make it? and how do i buy it on the little engines site?
@TheSteamChannel
@TheSteamChannel 5 лет назад
You don’t...you buy the parts and drawings and build it. It would cost over $80,000-$100,000 to have a shop do all the labor plus the $15,000 for the kit and $9,500 for the boiler...and about $5,000 in fittings/valves.

No, it’s not open to the general public. It’s also not a club. Some clubs have specific public run days, but they are the exception not the rule. Many that do are generally located on public land or in a public park.
