A gig review in their heyday described Cheryl’s voice as sweet as honey, Bobby’s as rough and hard hitting, Mike’s as ranging from choral to raunchy, and Jay’s as biting and sexy!
This is incredible to say, but we never heard this incredible 80s version, it's like a lost diamond. WOW... RU-vid is amazing. Thanks Bucks Fizz SOUNDS GREAT!
Great sound, Bobby has a great voice & looks gorgeous (lovely eyes), in fact they all look gorgeous! So happy to have been a teenager/young adult in the eighties, such a huge variety of music to listen to. Wicked times 👍.
The Romantics did the original of this, and took it into the US top five in 1983. This version is completely different, just confirming what a great song it is.
I didn't know that Bucks Fizz covered this song, was just watching episode 1 of the new season of "Dynasty" (the remake), and this song was used near the end of the episode. I thought I was hearing things. As Bucks Fizz were unknown in America. I googled it and then found out about The Romantics original. It still felt great hearing the song on a tv show in October 2019 !!.
Ha ha same! Just watching season 2 episode 1 heard this in the background and my memories drifted.....ahh the 80s I loved them. A time when it was cool to roll the sleeves up on your jacket!
i was not the worlds biggest bucks fizz guy hats off they bagged eurovision for us like this song was a real change less poppy more guitars bobby g doing the lead vocals good stuff.
The sound of my childhood. Amazing group and everybody in my primary school loved them. Great songs with such variety, great singers and GORGEOUS Mike. Bobby not bad either but I can’t forgive him for throwing his toys out the pram, leaving the group and trying to get money plus the group name via court. Such a shame.
I've never ever heard of these people before. How can that be? I was even in the UK in the early 80s, lol, and oddly, I came home with the first Stray Cats' single which we hadn't heard in Canada yet. It just amazes me how different things are now with exposure. I also thought this was a Romantics' song, and I'm glad to see I at least had that much right. Amazing.
+jacquesjunk Bucks Fizz were originally formed to participate in the 1981 Eurovision Song Contest, which they subsequently won! The song they entered, "Making Your Mind Up", went to number 1 in the UK charts that same year. They then went on to have a string of hits in the UK in the early to mid 1980's. They even became more progressive with some of their later songs (or rather those writing the songs for them did), showing that they actually had a lot more depth than just that of a fluffy manufactured pop band. Quite an underrated group as a result of the 'pop' label that was stuck on them right from the start.
True. As a working radio DJ back then I don't think their labels (RCA and Polydor) knew how to market them in what was becoming a much more fractured music market. Our loss, at least until now. Their later records should have been hits over here.
Was shocked to find this was bucks fizz singing this.. Heard it on the radio 5 minutes ago, and the radio station have song and artist come up when songs are playing.. Its not a usual bucks fizz song
Lisa Piper I think this one was kind of make or break time for them, as their previous couple of singles flopped - London Town only made #34 and Rules of the game #57. Different vocal styles were used by Bobby and Cheryl on them, which may have been a factor. Bobby even said in Smash Hits his voice was treated and he sounded like a munchkin. Not a lot for Cheryl and Jay to do on this one, have you seen the tv performances with them writhing around on the floor? The b side Don’t Think You’re Fooling Me was written and sung by Bobby too. I think he might have been planning to go solo around this time, having had a bit of success with his Big Deal single, the tv show theme. Their 1985 single Magical, the first to feature Shelley Preston was very rocky like this too, but flopped, #57. It just wasn’t them I think, plus I guess it took the public a while to warm to Shelley until New Beginning.
Happy Very Special Anniversary of their professional Career in making the difference for the global music production that brings the key of being the best musical singers in the world of royalty. 1981 -2021 What they done over the year is totally amazing for the world to shine up the gear of insperational genearations which is confident enough for them to be in charge of their loyalty of trust. What a amazing celbration of their perfect career in the land of fanasty. These singers are the top mostdecent bands in the musical history of Europrofession of Royal Musical Arts. Blast from Old School to New School Generations.
I love Bucks Fizz, but I love The Romantic's version more. This version doesn't have that awesome driving guitar rift, which is the highlight in the original.
I had to check the OG for that "awesome driving guitar riff" and was surprised it DID have the main riff in it, but the only thing missing was the 2nd rhythm guitar, which was just strumming chords... The extra guitar didn't really add anything to the song, since the actual driving force was the main riff, which is emphasized more in BF version.
The opening guitar riff sounds like it was inspired by the Steve Miller Band's intro to their song 'Abracadabra'. But quite a good pop song regardless. Wasn't this the single that had just been released when they had their terrible bus accident and Mike Nolan was so badly injured he was given the last rites?
Nice version, well produced. And you've got to love the video. Not easy for the lead vocal to look edgy when he's drinking milk rather than Jack Daniels and he's sharing screen time with a bouncing dwarf dressed as a baby, and 3 group members wondering what the hell's going on. So bad it's good,in a glorious 80's type way.
It's true, it is a bit of a mess, they were obviously going for a harder sound, so why do this jokey video? Straightforward performance vid might have been better

The band's first show was on Valentine's Day at My Fair Lady Club, in Detroit Michigan, opening for the New MC5 in 1977. The Romantics achieved popularity in the United States, Canada, parts of Asia, Australia, Europe, and Hispanic America during the first half of the 1980s on the strength of the band's songs and music videos. They were influenced by 1950s American rock and roll and 1960s North American garage rock as well as British Invasion music Bucks Fizz is a British pop group which achieved success in the 1980s, most notably for winning the 1981 Eurovision Song Contest with the song "Making Your Mind Up". The group was formed in January 1981 specifically for the contest and comprised four vocalists: Bobby G, Cheryl Baker, Mike Nolan and Jay Aston. They achieved instant attention with the dance routine which accompanied the song, involving a skirt-rip. The group went on to have a successful career around the world (albeit ignored in the United States), while the UK remained their biggest market, where they had three No.1 singles with "Making Your Mind Up" (1981), "The Land of Make Believe" (1981) and "My Camera Never Lies" (1982) and became one of the top-selling groups of the 1980s. They also had UK Top 10 hits with "Now Those Days Are Gone", "If You Can't Stand the Heat", "When We Were Young" and "New Beginning (Mamba Seyra)". Their worldwide record sales have exceeded 15 million.
Nadal znakomity utwór muzyczny. Świetna sekcja rytmiczna i z fantazją poprowadzony udramatyzowany wokal. Still a great piece of music. Great rhythm section and vocals dramatized guided fantasy.
This was never a cool enough band for me, but I loved BF from day 1. There. it's so liberating to come out at last. That's a terrible burden I've carried for nearly 40 years.
A while back the girl who recited the rhyme at the end of Land of make believe, Abby Kimber was in the audience at a Fizz gig, Cheryl gave her a shoutout. Perhaps whoever played the bouncing alien will put in an appearance at a gig soon and get a shoutout too!
mabe in euro tele, but this is definetly the new mamas papas version of any song bucks fizz do from this point on, meaning id never listen to it the same in my head as the original...GOT MILK ??
The thing about talking in your sleep, it often means nothing. I have very involved, adventurous dreams, where I am rarely ever myself, it is just like watching or being a part of a movie. I am told that I talk in my sleep. If my husband actually listened to anything that I might say in my sleep, he would think all kinds of things, none of which would be true. Unless someone is saying the same name every night, nothing that is said in sleep means anything lol
