I made my first kayak fishing trip into the Florida Everglades and had a blast fishing bucktails over channel structure. I'll definitely be doing this trip again! I just released my new bucktailing and blackfish jigging online course. You can learn more at www.saltstrong.....

John - Didn't you have a Maverick flats boat when you were fishing Blind Pass? That boat is what you need out of Everglades City to get out past Choko and Sand Fly passes. There is so much more down there to explore. Jew Fish are like 125 lbs Tarpon, they are fun to catch but, after awhile they are just work. A 25" Red Fish is much more rewarding and makes for a better dinner guest.

Something I noticed a lot of people do is holding the fish grips (boga) at a 90* angle to the fishes jaw rather than straight vertical; so it is digging into there jaw with all that leverage. I feel like it damages the fish more than the grips already do.
@JohnSkinnerFishing
@JohnSkinnerFishing 3 года назад
I get a grip on these fish pretty fast and then use my free hand to support the weight if the fish is removed from the water. I think the combination of the grip tool (used properly) and long nosed pliers makes for the cleanest landing and release.

Bucktail and a gulp catching flounder in the desert and my money is also on you John. That was some seriously ripping current. Beautiful action and nice fish, just like Elias was catching. Can you please provide more specific detail on total distance travelled or total time out fishing to deplete your 100 Ahr set-up? Kind of scary ending there where you almost got lost?? Remember that at night in the everglades you can chase the gators away by drumming on the kayak with your paddle. but nothing chases the mosquitos away.
@JohnSkinnerFishing
@JohnSkinnerFishing 3 года назад
I was in little danger of getting really lost, but I don't know how long it takes to kill the 100 AH battery. I was on that water for 8.5 hours yesterday, and used my trolling motor a lot, but I only ran it at power level 8/10 to travel. At the end when I had the launch in sight I ran it full out for the last 15 minutes. This is a problem because the trip is made by going out with the outgoing current but then coming back in against the beginning of the next outgoing. Round trip was 6 miles, but that doesn't include actual fishing, which is a lot of use of the motor. FWIW, I've been in Florida since mid-November and have seen less than a dozen mosquitos, and have only been bit once. Way different than last winter. I have no idea why. Noseums are a different story.
