Buddha’s Hair Sarira
Hair Sarira refers to the hair of Buddha Shakyamuni and is also called “Bulbal (Buddha’s Hair).
Jinsinsari were recovered from the cremation of Buddha’s corpse after the Blessed One passed into nirvana, but the Hair Sarira is different in that it was left by the Buddha himself while the Blessed One was alive.
Records of the Buddha’s Hair Sarira can be found in various scriptures and literature. In “Binimogyeong Volume 3 of Hangul Tripitaka Koreana”, there are the following records: Although Buddha’s hair had grown long, the monks did not dare to cut it out of respect. At that time, a child told the Buddha that he wanted to cut Budda’s hair, and the Blessed One readily agreed. While the Buddha had his hair shaved, a prince from the kingdom of Gupara came to visit the Blessed One. The prince asked the Buddha to allow him to return to his country with Buddha’s hair and take care of it. The Blessed One gave permission and told him to put the hair in a vessel made of cloisonne and present offerings thereto.
In the 48th Volume of Ten Song Rules, there is a content in which a grhapati Geupgodok visits the Buddha’s adobe and asks for at least a small holy object so that he can always see the Blessed One in person. The Buddha gave the grhapti his hair and nails, and the grhapati begged again for permission to build a pagoda to enshrine them. The Buddha gave permission to build a pagoda.
Perhaps the most famous place that currently enshrines the Hair Sarira is Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon, Myanmar, making this place a symbol of Myanmar Buddhism and a landmark of Myanmar. The reason why the Buddha’s hair (that was in India) ended up in Myanmar is explained in “The Great Dharma of Mahakanndhaka” and “Biography of the Great Buddist Monk, Samjang in the Jaeun Temple of the Great Tang Dynasty”.
Burmese merchants Trapusa and Bahalika were traveling to India. When the two met the Buddha, they offered food and became the first lay believers. The Blessed One gave the two men his hair and told them to build a pagoda. After returning to Myanmar, the two men built a pagoda with the help of the king. That pagoda is now Shwedagon Pagoda.
This story is also told through Myanmar folklore, and in addition to Shwedagon Pagoda, the Hair Sarira is said to be enshrined in Sule Paya, Botataung Pay, and Shwemawdaw Pagoda.
If you look at the scriptures and literature related to the Hair Sarira, you can find one thing in common. People who saw the Buddha asked the Blessed One to give them holy objects and tokens so that they could always make offerings and see the Buddha even if they could not see him. The Buddha gave his hair without hesitation in response to their request. The reason the Blessed One gave his hair like this was probably to give them faith. Although the Buddha taught logical and accurate teachings, the Blessed One showed expedient supernatural powers to people who lacked faith.
One important thing is that the Hair Sarira is not only enshrined in Myanmar. Seowangsa Temple in Korea also enshrines the Hair Sarira with the help of the Buddist community in Myanmar. If you visit the Seogwangsa Temple, you can see the Hair Sarira in person.
The Hair Sarira still showed us the divine power of the Blessed One. This is because when you place the Hair Sarira on water, you can see it moving like a living creature. It is true that some people show curious by asking how the Hair Sarira that is thousands of years old can move without rotting, and that movement of the Hair Sarira is neither scientific nor common sense. However, it is also true that there is no way to explain it other then that the Buddha exercised his supernatural powers as a way to give people faith.
