Fun fact: The real life monk Tang Sanzang(whose journey was adapted into Journey to the West) heard about the legend of the Amazon(the Greek legend) while in India. This legend was then adapted into the Journey to the West as the Woman kingdom(the location was moved to between China & India; culture was also changed to be more Eastern). I believe this is also the inspiration for the Chinese Amazon village in Ranma 1/2

There was a Woman Kingdom, Actually at least two, and it was confirmed because it wasn't just Xuanzong who reported this. Everyone in the region was aware of and interacted with them. At least There was also a Silla monk who traveled the same way as Xuanzong. the Kashmir kingdom's history describes a war with a female kingdom in the Himalayas. It is called Satri Raj(स्त्रीराज्य) on the border of present-day Tibet and Nepal. . Even Tang Dynasty official documents mention their existence, such as the Tang Hui Yao (唐会要), but they focus on the Eastern Woman Kingdom. Located in Changdu (昌都市: the easternmost district of present-day Tibet, bordering Sichuan) and Yushu (玉树: the southern district of Qinghai Province, bordering Changdu), they were the Zampa(སུམ་པ) or Qiang (羌) migration which became the economic and military resource for Eastern half of the Tibetan Empire. As for Satri Raj, it is in the western part of the empire. . "...Women are the rulers of the land. As such, women are the name of the state. Husbands rule together without involvement in politics. But they raised an army to fight and conquer the land. The soil is suitable for living, growing wheat, and having many sheep and horses. Cold weather The nature of the native people is easily irritated. It is bordered Tubo to the east, Yutian to the north, and Sanbohe(三波诃) to the west..."

Just a little expansion of avatar: you might already know this, but the four nations are inspired by real world cultures. the fire nation is inspired by Japan, Earth kingdom is inspired by china, Air nomad(s) are inspired by the tibetan monks and the water tribes are inspired by the Inuit peoples (think eskimos) Also, the four bending styles are inspired by real world, Tai chi for water benders, Hung gar for earth benders, Northern shaolin system for fire benders and Baguazhang for airbenders (if you've seen Naruto, this is the one that the 8 trigram fighting style is from which is what the hyugas use). They got professionals to display these so that the animators could recreate a grounded system of magic that isn't unfamiliar.

2:38 Slight slipup here: Tibet is southwest of China, and has been annexed by the People's Republic of China since 1951. Which is why the current Dalai Lama (spiritual head of Tibetan Buddhism and for a time theocratic head of state of Tiber), who was a child at the time, has been living in exile ever since. The movie "Seven Years in Tibet" with Brad Pitt is an entertaining, albeit heavily fictionalized and sanitized, retelling of this story. But Mongolia *is* indeed north of China and is also heavily Buddhist (of the Vajrayana/Tibetan school), to my knowledge (although they were a communist state for almost as long as Russia, so that probably had a huge impact on religion in the country).

Becoming extremely quiet and still like a monk can be a powerful experience with all kinds of benefits. We can change the circuitry of our minds during sustained meditation. In the famous German play Faust, the main character is introduced having a spiritual crisis and tries to find clarity reading the bible, starting with John 1. He only makes it to the first sentence and then just further sinks into despair over how "logos" should be actually translated into German. Is it "In the beginning was the word"? Or should it be "the meaning"? Or "the force", or "the deed"?
@LeSethX

Interesting that "love" has different meaning in Greek. I have often said that English lacks enough variation on the word, which could be used for "I love my spouse/children/friends/pets/job" and each would have a different meaning

Fascinating work as always Chris! Interesting trivial RE the Silk Road. Both Nestorian Christianity and Manichaeism would reach China traveling east during the same Tang Dynasty period. The emperor supposedly met with Nestorian missionaries, reviewed the scriptures and agreed to their value and veracity and permitting their propagation in China. There is a stone stele from the Tang Dynasty documenting the meeting of Christianity and the empire. Meanwhile Manichaeism took on more Buddhist elements as it moved east. The last Manichaen temple (Cao’an) is still in Fujian province, although now it is a Buddhist temple.

Small thing I thought about when you mentioned clergy members outfits. I always thought that pastor dressed in a suit is a mostly an American thing, as where I live, pretty much all clergy members (including different Christian denominations) wear either cassock or toga during Sunday mass. I wonder if the outfit (even the modern one) is somehow closely connected with the country of origin. Or perhaps it's more of a sign of when this denomination came about

Thank you for your own religious reflections! First of all, I missed that you are a pastor, which is extremely interesting and explains why you speak so soothingly well 😂 Secondly, any religious tale gets more interesting when put into comparable context. Your knowledge, thoughts and experience were to the point and enriched the story, so, thank you!) wondering, maybe there will be some religion-related content in the future?) I’m an atheist myself, but given my background in political theory I was always interested in religious as a system of moral philosophies. And, to be honest, with years I even start to feel strange envy towards religious people, who purposefully spend time contemplating eternity, purpose, values, and spend time in a community of likeminded people.

It's also quite interesting what role the Greeks (out of nowhere) played in all this. The statues! If you see earlier Indian style you'll notice their art is very different. The kingdoms Alexander the great left in the east influenced art and just like that people were making all shorts of statues in the styles the Greeks brought with them. That way Buddha statues were being sold across the silk road and Buddha now had a face along with a name and made the idea way more compelling to Chinese.

It being highly syncretic reminds me of some of my favourite shows. Sailor Mars for instance attends a Catholic school, but is a priest in Shintoism but her chants, archery, napalm, and many catchphrases are Buddhist, while she doesn't actually have any particular beliefs expressed that indicate much belief in any religion as we would think of it being true, although in her story, reincarnation is real without a doubt as she personally underwent that a couple of times and remembers her past from hundreds of thousands of years ago.

Yeah, the cosmic reasoning varies from religion to religion, but the messages are generally the same. Of course, that's ignoring the way those religions are practically applied, in which they almost always fall into totalitarianism due to some kind of fear of cosmic punishment.

I don't comment often but regarding your apology at the end for using your own religion as a way to understand others... I'm a very left leaning, openly gay atheist and I love your content. Even when you let your own biases and beliefs (which is very, very rare) in through your commentary, it is never heavy handed and I never feel like you're preaching to me, even when you are actively quoting scripture. Part of enjoying a reaction youtuber is liking what they bring to the table. Being able to watch someone use their own journey to understand another's is extremely useful and I think being unable to do that is why we've lost a lot of common ground on a myriad of subjects. Even if your end goal is a great vehicle style conversation, conversation doesn't happen if both sides are unable to recognize the other as a human being with an entire lifetime of lived experience. TLDR- Don't worry about the tiny fragments of time you use your Christian background in your commentary. You are FAR from the type of Christian people complain about for doing that.

The remarks at 4:10, I think, would probably most accurately display the sharp discrepancies between what westerners understand as "Buddhism" as opposed to how most Buddhists (in terms of demographic) understand their religion. Because, realistically speaking, the Vajrayana sects are pretty much a stark minority as compared to the Mahayana or Theravada. If we compare it to Christianity, the Mahayana and Theravada would be like Protestantism and Catholicism (in terms of numbers, not actual teachings) whereas Vajrayana would be a demographic way smaller in proportional comparison to Orthdoxy. Mahayana makes up for more than half of the demographic in Buddhism. So this really shows how a fad or popularity can very greatly warp public perception. And the biggest of such "warped perceptions" is ironically, what this series also has stated in the opening when it mentioned "most people take in Buddhism as a series of morals, ethics or philosophical principles." In reality, most Buddhists do not. It's a fully functioning religion where the infusion of elements of pre-existing religions into the system has a long, long history. The "Buddhism doesn't worship deities, it's just a philosophical attitude in life. So you can be even Buddhist and Christian at the same time" etc etc.. yeah, sorry, no. That's not how it works.

Additionally on Bible translations you have really different translations based on agenda, ideas, and even norms from the time. The famous and dominant King James translation was written less formally but became formal, but even then choose pro monarchy wording, and lost some of the characterization of the original Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek. The danger is (and this is what one person said to me) taking it as the only correct translation with God's endorsement meaning you lock yourself from a deeper understanding of context, word choice, and bias.

The whole "Mahayana" thing, and even the parallel with Christianity that was presented (eating certain foods, or not) all for the sake of getting converts and to an end goal ... just seems so disingenuous. It feels a step away from straight out lying to people, just to get them to believe in your god. If your invisible man in tge sky has a set of rules to live by, then clearly state them, and have everyone follow them. If he doesn't have any rules for certain subject, then let people do as they please, and call out religious leaders who start making up silly rules that don't pertain to something the invisible man wants us all to do. This hand-waving of certain rules, just to get more believers in one's faith is Machiavellian.

with respect, I disagree with you on number of fundamentalism people in islam. Its true that the fundamentalist groups are not the majority in most religion but when it comes to islam 70% of muslims are fundamentalist all you need to do is search for muslim commentators in youtube. Maybe its true in US that there are less fundamental muslims but in rest of the world fundamentalism is the main view of islam. I have so many muslim friends (most of them are non americans) and most of them are fundamentalist 100%. sure not as extreme as ISIS but for sure as extreme as IRAN or saudi arabia. I have never met a single muslim who does not get really angry or threaten you if you point out stuff about their religion. like take charlie hebdo cartoon of muhammed , you would be shocked how many muslims actually support the killing. you would also be shocked how many muslims would support capital punishment for apostates. no hate towards muslims oir anything but just saying that fundamentalism is big in islam and im sure even muslims here would agree with me on that. which is why islam has been a big issue.
