Lotus Lantern Festival was held on Saturday evening in Jongno, in the center of Seoul.
I found out about the festival while passing by and immediately walked around and joined them.
On a larger scale than expected, many temples and school teams participated in the parade wearing traditional costumes and holding lanterns. It is said that the march continued from Dongdaemun through Jongno to Jogyesa Temple. It was an endless procession. We filmed the first 30 minutes of highlights.
Everyone was excited about the first festival held in the post-corona era when social distancing was lifted and daily life is restored.
Let's walk together on that exciting scene!
[Lotus Lantern Festival]
Lotus deunghoe is a Buddhist event to light the world by lighting up lanterns on the occasion of Buddha's birthday in Korea. It started to be held at the national level along with the Palgwanhoe in the 12th year of King Jinheung of Silla, and became popular especially during the Goryeo Dynasty and became a national event. I caught it. On this day, lanterns were lit and tea was served, the king and his subjects enjoyed music and dance together, and the Buddha was entertained to pray for peace for the country and the royal family.
Lotus lantern means to light a lamp, and in Buddhism, it has the meaning of praising and paying tribute to the merits of the Buddha who taught us to break ignorance by lighting a lamp.
[Lantern Festival 2022]
This year's 'Yeondeunghoe' was prepared to light a lamp of hope and healing in the post-corona era so that people who are tired of Corona 19 can safely return to their daily lives. After the lantern parade, a special performance party was held on a special stage at Jonggak Intersection. April 8th in the lunar calendar is the birthday of Buddha in Korea. On the same day, the Korean Buddhist community will hold a celebration of Buddha's birthday at Jogyesa Temple in Seoul and other temples in Korea.
