Most of these are difficult to practice because they fundamentally disfavor individual survival which is the root of all wanting. In other words, survival is not meant be for true happiness, but for owning and greed.

Learning to be humble and need little makes it easier to take care of our basic physical and material needs. It's something we can learn and cultivate, and, by doing so, we have more ability to live in contentment from within, a true gift we can then share with others as it is great wisdom, and others are attracted to us as they sense it. Greater joy follows as fulfillment truly comes from how we can act and impart knowledge to others to improve the quality of their lives. The hurdle is to not get caught up in the world again A line from the baghavad Gita says Even the mind that knows the path can stray from the path because the senses are so unruly, but the seer recollects his mind and focusses it on me, I call him a seer, I call him illumined

@@AwesomeAndrew The whole world is built up around greed and ruthless competition. If you work in the corporate environment, it will be clear how incongruent Buddhism is to the corporate culture. Sometimes I suspect human beings may not be the species equipped to be liberated, although some of us can get there through a tremendous amount of practice. Yes, I realized that we almost have to question every daily belief and value and act accordingly to seriously practice Buddhism. Most of time that means behave opposite to what other people do.

What do you say to someone facing homelessness?

It'll be different for each individual I reckon and it would depend on the nature of the person who is facing homelessness, and also their perspective on life.. Some people, even amidst great adversity will be open to discovering the blessing if they have had mindfulness training and insight into the impermanent nature of life.. People who are absolutely bound up in materialism may well be in shock and not open to any possibility of embracing it there and then.. "Is there anything I can do to help you right now?" would be a useful thing to say.
