@@audiophileman7047I don't know how it would have worked out for Buddy long term,some accounts say he had a developing drink problem. But then, some people carry on with life anyway, somehow. But I think he was ready to cut down on the performing and get more into writing, and maybe recording and producing. Let someone else do the Winter Dance Parties.

@@user-uv3gy7bq1o I'm talking about the film "Buddy" with Gary Busey, which I've seen trailers of but never watched. Well I was a bit confused about your post, I thought that's the one you were talking about. Yes I've seen the less famous one about Ritchie. The one I saw I think was called "Donna", is that right? And Donna is a great record. Whatever, let's not fall out about it. But take it from me, yes Ritchie is well known in oldies circles, and may have gone on to great things,who knows? But Buddy Holly is a certified legend.

I can't say enough how great Buddy was. All the nuances of his melodies, harmonies, down strokes. If you pay attention this guy was ahead of his time. It was pop, rock, rock a billy, blues, and so on. If I could go back in time it would be that February day and stop that plane. Long live Buddy. Your music never died.
@serferten

+Joe Rodriguez So true, Joe, which is why the Beatles borrowed so much from him and the Everly Brothers. The movie brings out how eclectic he was, pretty amazing for someone in rural Texas in the early '50s.

@serferten
@serferten 8 лет назад
+Walt Jabsco You've got it. How did they do so much with so little, and influence so many long after they were gone? I think it's safe to say without Buddy and the Everly Bros there really wouldn't have been a Beatles. At least we've got The Buddy Holly Story movie.
@BillyJango
@BillyJango 8 лет назад
serferten I don't want to sound negative here but I thought the guy who played Buddy Holly in that film was pretty bad. He had the moves and stuff but he looked absolutely nothing like him. He had massive teeth, I couldn't take him seriously. He reminded me of that actor what played 'The nutty professor', not Eddie Murphy obviously, the original 60s one. And I am not a Beatles fan either. I don't know why but they do nothing for me. I told you my reply would sound negative!

One of the purest melodies of all time, and one of Buddy's super sleeper songs. Catch George Harrison and the Beatles' version of "Crying, Waiting, Hoping" before the Fab Four became famous, but after the NAMED themselves after Buddy's Crickets. As melodist, lyricist, lead guitarist, and creator of the prototype rock and roll band, Buddy Holly is far and away the most creative of all the Rock Hall of Fame's first inductees. Of course, Elvis, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, the Everly Brothers, Ray Charles, Fats Domino and the rest are pretty tremendous themselves. Even though this video is from Buddy singing "Peggy Sue" on B&W TV, it's still a stunning example of the genius of rock and roll for the Texan lads. The Rock Revolution Rolls On.

In a spirit of good will I would like to share some Buddy Holly history, as it is reflected in this RU-vid post. Buddy's younger fans often speculate about what they see and hear. For the fans who care, firstly, the video is from Buddy Holly's first appearance on the Ed Sullivan show. Two songs were performed by the Crickets that evening. First was That'll Be The Day. Second was Peggy Sue. The video used here is of That'll Be The Day. The drumming style used by J.I. on Peggy Sue was completely different. The easy way to tell is J.I. never uses his hi-hat while playing Peggy Sue. As to the song, the original was recorded by Buddy in his apartment shortly before his death, just Buddy and his acoustic guitar. Later, for commercial release, the song was overdubbed by The Jack Hansen Combo to add additional vocals and instrumentation. Personally I like this song very much. Finally, a compliment to 2paulson2 for a very well done and tasteful post.

Buddy died before this version was recorded. He doesnt play the Lead here. He didn't play on this recording technically. It was a bunch of studio musicians whose names you can locate in Archives. He died before the tapes were taken from his NYC apartment and handed to 2 producers one Buddys former engineer / manager at Clovis NM studios. It's from his NYC apartment tapes recorded in late 1958 December) and Jan. 1959 with Buddy writing and singing and playing along with an acoustic guitar. No reverb effects...just Buddy and his guitar. He never heard this version. Buddy does'nt get enough credit for his playing of his Fender Strat guitar. Everyone else played a Gibson. Buddy is Truly someone who changed how RockNRoll is played. But he wouldn't live long enough to know it....

His old producer, Norman Petty took a band named the Fireballs and did the music and another group called the Picks for backing vocals on his newest songs.

Yeah. this has Donald Arnone on lead guitar. George Harrison particular liked his solo enough to learn it. not the easiest to learn by ear. I had to watch someone on youtube playing it to learn it. From what i gather on discogs Donald was a jazz guitarist and maybe played spanish or world music as well. Not alot of his playing on youtube though, if it is his name isnt mentioned.

After Holly's death on February 3, 1959, his home recordings of his last six compositions were turned over to record producer Jack Hansen. Hansen hired studio musicians and a backup vocal group, the Ray Charles Singers, to augment Holly's vocal(1) and guitar(1). ------studio version of "Crying, Waiting, Hoping" was recorded on June 30, 1959 at Coral Records' Studio A,--------Because "Crying, Waiting, Hoping" was popular in England's Merseybeat-scene, the song was recorded by others, including the Beatles, with George Harrison doing the vocal and replicating STUDIO GUITARIST Donald Arnone's instrumental bridge, NOTE FOR NOTE. One of the recordings was officially released in 1994 on Live at the BBC

You cannot use enough adjectives about Buddy Holly. He was the “Mozart” of Rock and Roll. But also I hate that Richie Valens is too often overlooked. You talk about someone who made SOMETHING from nowhere. I really would have like to have seen where he would have taken music. Whatever “it” is they both had it!

Yes, Valens started off with 3 singles and passed. Then Bob Keane had a lot of studio tracks and home recordings he released. I also found a boxed set called 'Come on, let`s go` with 3 discs. It has all three of his albums plus there are extras, too. Plus he was a great performer.
