Is it just me, or did Harry James miss the first look from Buddy at 1:59? Then, at 2:01 Buddy gives him a second look and the band came in. Of course, Buddy doesn't miss a beat.
Never ever ever think for one moment that Buddy did not know when he just might have made a mistake? Oh yes he was human and above all he would scream at his men in the band but but Buddy would be just as Hard on himself. he wanted perfection in his big band small band you name it. Buddy was a TASK MASTER he always always always strived for the best. Also keep in mind Buddy Rich was also a Excellent Tap Dancer. He would tap dance in his parents Vaudeville Act. Also Buddy was a proud proud proud U S A Marine. Whats that got to do with it? Its discipline discipline. You go on that band stand night after night and night after night. People come to hear you perform and they demand one hundred per cent., No excuses. You want to hear Buddy Rich??? you want to see and hear what all drummers want to hear and see., Buddy Rich always gave you everything and even more The Legend in drumming Buddy Rich. enough said.
I don’t think he made a mistake hitting that cymbal It was a perfect hit in time But if he didn’t mean to hit it you’d never know He was nearly inhuman on those drums There was other great drummers innovating at the time Jazz was booming Louie Belson who was Up there with buddy but not quite Louie once said if you think you can play up to Buddy fine but you couldn’t do it better There is no such animal as Buddy A lot of drummers talk of Philly jo and Max Roach I really like Sonny Paine but in reality no one was in Buddy’s league His hands are something of amazement compared even to today’s drummers Three drums and his power and endurance is nothing to play with He is the worlds greatest drummer RIP Buddy 1917 - 1987
OH! Buddy made a mistake! He didn't mean to hit that cymbal at the start of his solo. Oh my God, oh my, oh my...this just might be evidence that he was human. Of course, maybe he meant to.
