Yes, the comment about Mel was also a drummer is correct. Also take note that Mel was also an accomplished arranger and orchestrator. Every note and chord you heard was written by Mel. Buddy and Mel were very good friends and respected each other's musical knowledge. The best jazz singer and the best jazz drummer on the same stage. It doesn't get much better than this.
I saw Tormé the year before as a college student. I couldn’t believe what he could do, didn’t think it was even possible. Buddy Rich pushes him even greater heights here.
I really enjoyed that. I must admit I've never heard of Mel Thorne till now. What a performer! Buddy was just being Buddy, the best of the best. It's a real shame that, that type of musicianship is just lost to modern day music!
Mel Tormé (pronounced Tor-may) (nickname - The Velvet Fog) and Buddy went back together a long way. Mutual admiration. Mel wrote a biography about Buddy Rich. They also recorded an album together.
This never fails to put a smile on my face. Two giants at their best. I NEED a the cleanest version possible…I wonder if mel and buddy are on merv’s dvd set?
Wow, I did not know Mel Tormé - I am fascinated and impressed! And you had to be really good, to give instructions to Buddy Rich and not get fired (about playing a little quiter)!
