I watched Buddy play many times. I met him and talked to him. He was the best drummer of the 20th century. BTW a matched grip is far superior to traditional grip which started with marching drums. While marching you have to move the drum out of the way of your leg to step, only then is it helpful to play with a different grip. Buddy played how most drummers were shown. You can get around the drums both sides far better with matched grip.

It's funny you say that because Buddy was interviewed and made the opposite statement that the standard grip was far more versatile and flexible (and I've actually found to be more comfortable too).

@@PiotrBarcz Yes- I often find that the drummers who complain about traditional grip are the ones who are not executing it properly- I think that it is a much superior grip. I am sure that, thinking of all of the incredible minds over the first century of drum set players, that someone would have realized that they could tilt the snare drum the other way and use matched grip: there is a reason that 99% of those drummers used traditional grip, and it wasn't blind dogmatic subservience to tradition- they weren't stupid!

@@calmac9720 tilting the snare forward is more comfortable anyway to get rim shots.
