What, you don't want to save all the little bunnies and birdies? You are furthuring climate change with your love of arguably man's greatest invention so far!
Phil!!! You need to prime the system before you fire it up it will start a whole lot faster. Remove the fuel hose off the exhaust and blow into it. You will see the fuel line from the tank to the carb fill up. You can also plug the exhaust hole with your finger while you pull the cord to prime the system.
Nitro is amazing. You don't need a video soundtrack to cover the bland sound of only tire noise on dirt... or the silence of asphalt. It is a mechanical machine that you have to learn. It isn't a record player, you know? It has an engine!
I had a nitro Rustler back in the early 2000's. It was really the only way to go back then because the electric models were slow. I'm so much happier now with electric and brushless
Pretty much same for me. Took too long to charge, very little run time and slow. I still have 4 nitro savages and a bunch of hpi nitro cars. Now the electric is so good it's hard to go back to dirty nitro. Thinking about doing an E conversion on my 5B.
Started running my nitro rustler at the track and it’s 2024 a few of the guys want one now 😂, you’ll be surprised how it can keep up with the modern cars easily it’s just lacking with its 20 year old suspension.
maybe the high end needle on carb is to lean on top and the two speed adjustment screw sounds like it might be set to light. If i can remember correctly the more you tighten the set screw in the two speed, the later the engagement. 🤙🏼
Can I put in a request, Phil? Use colour wheels when drifting because we can't see the black wheels turning opposite lock in your videos. It's like when a black dog has black eyes, it's all black dollop of fluff and you don't know where it's looking!
Nitros do have a steep learning curve. But it's actually not hard once getting a grip on how it works. But as you said, patience is needed, at least in the beginning.
when you were cutting out the body to make room for the engine, the dremmel going through the plastic sounded like my cat when it's hungry. nice job on the paint btw since i'm the same and only use maybe 2 colors at most. see you in the next vid! cheers Phil.
That thumbnail is enticingly tasty. Didnt even get a chance to think about the vid just clicked it like "ooh". You got me to watch a vid abouy a nitro drift car...nice.
Nitros are 2 strokes and 2 strokes are all the same spends hours getting them running right and when they're running right they're awesome but next time you use it there's a 95% possibility your going back to square one 😂😂.
They are not hard to tune! The standard after properly breaking them in is usually 1-1/2 turns. Unless you're racing professionally and going to varying altitude and humidity changes just leave it be and have fun
Awesome noisy drift footage Phil 👌 Just had a sale email from Jadlam - they're plugging the bag saying "Tomleys got one in his new upload " bit of advertising for you there m8 😊
Never run nitro, but I can see and hear the attraction especially with the shiny wheels... I have never said this to a man before, but I would love your old body... 🤣
Yes, I enjoy it to a point… but when you spend half the time trying to get it running and then it just plays up..it can be a little disheartening. This one seems to run pretty good once it’s warmed up
Poke a bit wire down the exhaust nipple that goes to the tank it's probably got some solder or brazing weld blocking it so it's not pressurising the tank.
Superb Phil I've only had one nitro ever. It took for ever to get going, it did not have a safety shut off once I finally got it running I lost signal and hit a kerb full on at full beans and destroyed it the insult was it landed in a lump and the piggin engine carried on running a complete gasgud
Nitros usually are easy to fire up, at least from my experience. If the engine don't fire up immediately, stop trying cause there's something wrong. Just as it did here with the new pipe, engine wasn't getting fuel.
There should be an access plug in the 2 speed and an allen screw to change the shift point.. also richen the high speed needle to get rid of that bog at high rpm.. im sure you know all this but i had to chime in.. i love nitros… the noise and smell is so cool👍
Nice video! I have some things to note :) To change the shift point of the 2-speed transmission - there is a hole near the second gear. There is a screw inside there, which adjusts the shift point. If you rotate it clockwise - the gearbox will shift later. If you rotate it counterclockwise - the gearbox will shift earlier. You shouldn’t rotate it more than 1/6 of a turn. Try to play with it for a bit, I’m sure you’ll get it perfect 💪 And secondly - PLEASE tell me where did you buy that body? I really want one SOOO MUCH! :D
hey phil the 2 speed is usually adjusted where the 2 gears are there should be a hole that will line up with another hole and there should be a adjustment grub screw down in there
You really should get and use a starter box for your nitro stuff. As a kid if i was hauling a nitro car on my bike that was even better as I would just flip it over and start it off the back tyre. Adjusting the two speed change points is also pretty simple. The driven gears low gear will be running a couple of clutch shoes that when they get to speed will throw out and engage. Usally a couple of adjusting screws in each shoe set the clearance and spring pressure to set rpm lockup. The driven gears drive through a 1 way bearing fo each. If your transmission isnt going into top 90% of the time its the bearing not working correctly.
Hey Phil, when I first saw your high speed carb setting I thought that looks a little too lean. It probably only needed about an 1/8th to 1/4 turn anti-clockwise on the high speed needle. Sold nitro cars for 15 years and did some winter racing with them. No more nitro tuning these days, can't say I miss that part 😂. Only ever seen that once with an exhaust as someone else said something must be blocking it so just have a good poke around inside don't be scared to go deep 👀
Not sure if you know man but don't dry sand carbon fiber like that without proper good respiratory protection, becuase carbon dust is a killer. can do it under a small amount of water to help stop it.
Yes I know... I was holding it away from me and as you can see, I have the Dremel the correct way around so it was dropping away from the part I was 'sanding'.
When you wound the hsn in a bunch and then the engine sounded like an angry chewbacca after the wot runs, that was the engine telling you the top end is too lean. When you do slow mo, try to take the pitch shift out of the sound if your software can do it, it'll sound so much better 😉
That looks great with that body on. Sounds awesome too. Ive been trying to get a friends nitro buggy started for weeks, and no joy. Ive converted it to roto start, and that helps a bit. Not a fan. 🤷🏻♂️
Nice seeing you do nitro! I had and still have several for semi-professional racing along with some fun rigs. The Traxxas Jato 3.3 did 100+km/h about 15 years ago when I had one, so yeah, nitros can be pretty fast. And isn’t that sound and smell just wonderful?
i know on HPI 2 speed, on the transmission tunnel right beside gear mesh should be a hole where you can adjust when 2nd gear engages. maybe this ftx has the same design for adjustment?
Hey little tip if he wants to die on the top end, then he is to lean on the top I now that because I'm am a professional 1/8 buggy racer and I do races, last year I was youth state champion 😉
The 2speed needs to be adjusted. There should be a set screw on cluch bell. On my nitro back in the day I put the air filter on a longer hose to stick out the body.. cold air intake 😂😂
You and I both know that heating the head will assist you in starting it. Use a hair dryer or heat gun to heat the head or even a head heater. Then you will get it firing up right away. lol I laugh watching people struggle, do the right steps.
She's a bit lean at the top end or something, struggling to get enough fuel at high speed. Could be an air leak or fuel cap seal, or even a clogged carb, but that's v unlikely given how little usage it's had. Did you store it with after run?
Good gains can be made by some simple mods inside the engine, bevel here; smoothing there , match porting the header, and you can have easily more hp and more revs
Hi, The two speed gearbox is listed for Carnage NT? I had this problema while ago and it was the one thing that put me off purchasing the Banzai Nitro as I really wanted a 2 speed? Is it exactly the same chassis/ direct fitment? I generally love the FTX stuff as already have two FTX Vantage's and a Electric Banzai. Great video BTW!
I remember back in high school like 25 years ago. My friend had a nitro Traxxas truck and it was fun to drive but like so obnoxious to deal with 99% of the time. I like that it's an engine but I also don't because the engine noise from those things are horrible. They just sound like weed wackers, they smell like shit and they're 10 times more effort to use than the amount of fun you actually have when they're running, assuming they actually run lol😂 I can't stand electric actual vehicles but when it comes to RC I love electric. It made the hobby so much more fun
