Love your approach to the "affordable" miniatures! I think they are great for gaining experience painting and for dioramas as well. Learn with these guys and when your ready to compete, go with Standard models.

I find it much more difficult to paint washed out non-existent details than a higher quality casting. Good luck painting the face of that zombie Ash specifically mentions as a beginner. These are not even good for practicing brush strokes and techniques because there's no volumes or surfaces that don't seen molten or shaped by an Orc's thumb.

Honestly, these guys probably wouldn't be bad for basic mobs in D&D. Plenty of miniatures end up only being on the board for a few minutes at most, and it's not really necessary for the basic enemies to look great. I prefer to put the real effort into leaders, bosses or whatever other special enemies turn up in our game, and of course player characters. I'll 3D print the models that are important, but for the most basic mobs, these might be a little ugly, but a half decent slap chop paint job on them and these will do the job

I bought this pack for D&D, and for monsters that spend less than a round or two on the table, they are great value. Even the ones that are mis-scaled are fine. I've got a 3D printer and the ease of $30 is sometimes better spent than the time to find, sort, print and clean a mini.

Completely agree. I'm giving away the orcs because they're just too silly, but all the rest of the monsters I'm keeping for playtests and randoms.

These are tempting, but the same company makes some Townsfolk minis that have such poor facial details I'm going to paint them up as though they're Simulacrums of people, and have my players encounter a town of them

The thing about the sets with the fairies and the dragons is that not everything will scale with your 28/32mm fantasy minis. The fairies are human-sized, the dwarves are pretty tall (but a lot of modern dwarves scale well), the skeletons are very tall and their base is about 50mm in size. They were originally just meant to be kids toys, like the buckets of fantasy figurines you might've gotten at TRU way back, but when the company found out some people bought them to use the dragons, ogres, etc for D&D they released em rebranded somewhat.

the scales do kinda seem all over the place just by looking at the photos! I'd have to use them in different ways - maybe the dragons as statues or symbols on an overworld map.

I bought this set and slapchop painted them simply to use in a middle school for gaming. Kids have played DnD and Frostgrave with them. They’re way more forgiving than collectible 28mm minis.

The boxset for Rune Wars comes with quite a few human knights and skeleton minis(also a stone golem and giant worm) that actually look really good if a bit cartoony. The box is around $50 but you can get it on sale for $30 regularly.

I have been tempted so many times but passed and saved up instead. I’ve been very successful with the “vulture” approach of patiently waiting and watching for a rock bottom price. Now I am running out of space. But just picked up Bardsung for $21 at Walmart!

I say when you're starting out these are good to grab, either these or 2d minis. Fill out the table, then work on getting your individual quality minis.

ah I think I know these, the dragons from the other set are actually really nice and painted really well. after some minor alterations I was able to make a young dragon for most but not quite all of the dragon variations with them.

Paint is king. The best sculpt can be ruined by bad painting as can the meh sculpt made better by painting. I'd buy a box.

Different games like D&D have skeletons for different races. For example a hafling skeleton or orc skeleton. I think they were trying cover all basis since they are generic miniatures. Nice video.

UNLIMITED minis guide (almost free) 1. Find a picture of a portrait you like 2. Adjust to size (medium is 1inch x 1.5inches, large is 2x3 ect.) 3. Copy past image and rotate the copy 180⁰ 3. Put the rotated copy above the origional 4. Print, cut, and fold to make a 2 sided pawn that stands on its own 5. Enjoy :p

There were a lot of weird and goofy ones in the set, but overall it doesn't seem *that* bad of a purchase. As someone who likes to kitbash, I'd likely modify most of them. The melee skeletons would look quite a bit better with just swapping the big heads with ones that are more in-scale. Maybe adjust the poses of the ones with the extra arms, too.

Pro tip: switch your camera to manual focus, focus it on the close ups and shoot. It won't hunt around for focus. Just make sure you keep everything at the same distance from the lens.

Thanks for showing those, but I would never spent money on those. Sure as test miniatures for painting, those might be ok, but you can achieve the same goal with a bag of plastic armymen, and those are cheaper.

I just found a bucket of fairies, unicorns and dragons at five below that have surprisingly awesome detail and they put these to shame. 😆 still, I like them for placeholders for battle tests and whatnot. I don't like dragging out the HQ set every time

These are actually pretty good for their price. If you want super-quality figures, be prepared to pay super-high prices. LOL! For future reference, please show the actual heights of the figures, in millimeters. Scale is useless, and comparing to one type of game's figures, is useless if we don't have that same game's figures -- we won't know how tall either figure is, so we really have to guess based on images in the scene. I appreciate your video, I just wish it was more detailed with actual measurements, to eliminate guesswork. Cheers!

Will do (or at least will try to remember). The target audience should be everyone, but this is for the HeroQuest enjoyed in mind, hence the specific comparison. As to the value...Definitely subjective. I didn't keep the orcs because even if they had been free, they were simply not desirable in the slightest to me. 😆

I hate that modern RPG fantasy races just look like humans with different faces. I call it Star Trek syndrome. Orcs, Hobgoblins, Trolls, Ogres, and Bugbears are the worst culprit. They all look practically the same. Bring back pig orcs and wirey, long limbed trolls. Races need more distinction.
