I've found that if you roll up those pads in the opposite (against the curl) direction you can get them to relax a little bit and not want to curl up so much the next time you unroll them. Great vid.

I had to mention this with the number of times you talked about the curling up of the sleep pads. The cheap sleep rolls are easy to get to not curl just roll it the oppsite direction with some pressure until its flat. You dont need tent stakes to catch on or rip your sleeping bag or put holes in your pads Another good budget backpack is the teton sports 4000. This was my first backpack they are getting more expensive it was 45 dollars at the time i think they are closer to 70 now as the brand gains popularity I sent both of these videos to some friends considering backpacking. Great stuff man thanks for the content. You might convince me to switch to hammocks some day One major thing is i dont recommend people use a tarp shelter starting out unless its early spring or late fall (Which require a warmer sleeping bag). Bugs can really ruin a trip and the idea of camping for people starting out. Mosquitos are impartial to any time of day or weather and can be relentless at night. I totally understand why you presented the option as its very cost efficient. I would say invest in a tent or a hammock. At the least i would recommend a bug net for under 5 dollars though that would likely be uncomfortable to sleep in.

Quite a different video from you Sintax. It is real neat to see you out of your comfort zone. There is a lot to learn for both novice and experienced backpackers in this video. You have come a long way in your backpacking hobby, and to see you go back to basics "sort of" as a newbie is really cool. Keep on doing what you do.

Great vid ! It's good to see you were in one of my favorite Pa. hunting and camping areas. Went on my first Spring Gobbler hunt in 1974, very near the Hemlocks. Took several gobblers in the area. Slept in my rig right were you were parked. Also, many years of deer hunting off of Upper Buck Ridge,near the pipe lines. Last time I was up there, Big Springs State Park (below the Hemlocks ) was closed to camping. Another location that is good for hiking and camping near-by is Fowler's Hollow State Park. There are a couple of old,log half shelters in the area for hikers. One closer to the parking area at the Park and one a couple of miles deeper down the main trail all the way back to what we called the "Bowl"; which is near I believe is Twig Trail, which connects with Hemlock Road. I slept in that shelter a couple of times. Very nice back there.

Very Good Sintax! You always deliver great videos for us to watch. The next solo stealth camp video sounds like another great idea! Someone on a forum gave me crap about calling it stealth camping. He shouted back to me that it's called dispersed camping. lol He may be correct, but I still call it stealth camping! 😂 I still hope someday you will make it up north to my area. Great simple outing, Sean! I love the quick overnighters with light weight gear...simplicity makes it so much fun. I've camped on a slope as well but with my feet pointed down the incline; less chance of a roll over. I have a pack set to go but it weighs 33# so I may just ditch half the gear and go minimalist instead. Nice to see Denali again, too!

Appreciate that you demonstrated the gear, like the water purifier & didn't give just the usual "this worked great" like some others. Denali did well. Your Kelty tent listed is not in stock. May I suggest instead the Ozark Trails 4 season 2-person at around $45 retail. I found it a surprisingly good tent, like it almost as well as my others costing more than twice as much.

The Steripen depends on the bioburden in the water. When you use it to drink from a creek where cattle runoff is upstream of you, you risk parasitic infections such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia. Stick with a filter or filter after the Steripen for double safety

Instead of having a lamp to guide you back to camp, just throw a reflex around a tree trunk/branch. The higher the better. Either the ones that dangle on a rope at your side or the ones that collapse around your leg. Uses no power and you can just shine some faint light in the general direction for a "light house" to guide you back to camp. It works really well, especially in the pitch dark when you're waking up in the middle of the night for a pee run.

I am a long-time Steripen user, great to see it in your gear list at last! I do like the BeFree as well, but the bottles have a horrific plasticky taste that makes it unusable for me. I do usually use a pre-filter of some sort with the steripen, but it depends on the water source.

Nice video. Simple and prof flow cost doesn’t mean cheap. Doing this in my nearby backyard, kind of. You lucked out. Got two spring days in a row when it wasn’t raining or near 99 degrees. Speaking of hot days at Tuscarora, I saw a pic of a on a PA DNR FB page of a group of bears at Tuscarora taking. A dip in stream to cool off. I saw the bear bag, so I have to ask. Ever worry about your side kick in bear country. Although I’m sure his early warning system is top notch. But I’m sure he’d stand hi ground. Keep up the good work.

Very nice video man! Im a tent guy, for sure...but while thru-hiking last year, I got real curious about a simple A-Frame tarp...after watching this, Im def gonna tarp it up when this weather turns into hiking season! Love Mountain Houses, but the breakfast ones take a special kind of "non-pickiness" to enjoy, lol. Btw, you ever consider doing cowboy coffee??...I HIGHLY recommened it my guy!

I've been meaning to take some grounds out and try cowboy coffee, but haven't done so yet. I'll have to give it a shot. What is Denali bred like? He has the structure of a true APBT. Not a chunky waddling bully. Nor does he have the square back you see in AKC Am Staffs/UKC APBT. Denali has that cat like stride which the roach back is something you see in true athletic APBT’s. None the less he’s a cool dog and has great structure from I can see.

Dog pack manufacturers should take some design ideas from equines. Horses and mules have breast collars and britching or cruppers (though I cannot see a crupper working well on a dog). It keeps the load from shifting forward or backwards on slopes.

When you tie the tarp out at the center between two trees are you just securing with grommets or do you run a center line all the Way across
@sintax77
@sintax77 6 лет назад
Good question and something I forgot to address in the video. My tarp, like most tarps, didn't have tie-out points directly on the center line. I bought some grommets at the fabric store and punched in my own centered at each end. I tied my two separate lines directly to each one and it worked well. A single free floating line with the tarp pulled down over top certainly would have worked as well. I did like the extra stability of having them tied right to the tarp though.

Check out Thrive Life freeze dried foods for camping and backpacking. You can make up your own meals with zero carbs or sodium. It makes eating keto a lot easier when camping and backpacking.

question, why do you need a tarp above you when you sleep? I can understand it during day time for shade, but why need it at night to block the stars?

I put names and links for those and some of Denali's other gear in the vid description. The leash is by OutdoorMaster and his pack is by One Tigris.

If you really want to keep it simple while you’re stealth camping, I challenge you to use some knots instead of gadgets. Very light weight, you won’t lose them in the leaves when you drop them and it won’t cost you a dime. i.e. taught line hitch, prusik knot, marlin spike hitch, half hitch, bowline etc... #KnowledgeIsPower

Try a tea infuser, aka tea ball, couple of bucks. Put in ground coffee, pour boiling water, two minutes later you've got a cup of the real thing.

I've actually got a few of those at home already. Never thought of packing it in for coffee though. Great idea - thanks for the heads up!

What do you do for tick prevention? Just curious I'm in the woods alot my self. Thanks Greg

Nali has a monthly oral treatment. For myself, I actually experimented with Picardin lotion for the first time. Goes on like sunscreen. I never found anything on me, despite seeing a tick ground at one point, so I know they were out there. Considering I slept right on the ground with an open sleeping bag, I was pretty happy with that.

Thank you for this information. It may be nice to hear at the being and end of your trips what you are using for bug protection for you and Denali. That would be very help information. I have used Picardin spray with great results. For Denali did you find any ticks on him. I would like to take my dog (Neptune) on more hikes.

Dude on your first break you neglected the dogs. His pack or should I say his back needed a break also.

Yeah, good rule of thumb is every time you take off your pack take off your dogs too.

Good idea for a video but when you use the beFree/Sawyer's you should wipe off the bag so you don't contaminate the clean water.
