Yep, it was a nightmare Craig! A gut wrencher for sure and one I'd not like to repeat! Like the idea of having an off site location, one which I will also do! Piece of mind is the way forward. Cheers Rich

Absolutely Rob, it's not a nice feeling at all and I was really lucky to recover most of the data! R👍

Hi Richard, yes this is a very important subject for our digital times. I use Apple as well and I have all of my images in my computer (so far) and the computer is backed up with Time Machine to an external HD. That external HD failed last year and I just bought another and ran my Time Machine again, no harm done. I also have a Synology 2-bay NAS where everything is backed up to the one bay, which is also mirrored to the second bay. Then, if my house burns down or someone breaks in and scoffs the lot, I have everything periodically backed up on a couple of drives at the home of another family member (very important precaution).

Thanks Phil, it's always one of those videos that's not for all but backup is so important! The Synology system is really good and one I will move on to ASAP. Great to backup at another location just to be sure it's totally safe. Cheers Rich

Great advice Rich Iast year I had an internal drive fail on a PC under guarantee which all my pictures were on. The drive was replaced by the manufacturer and having backed everything up I was faiirly easily able to restore everything. It was my first experience of a drive failure but I was so glad I had back ups in place. Can't imagine what it must feel like to think you jhave lost everything glad you got the vast majority back.

Thanks Steve glad you enjoyed it and you have also taken the precaution to backup your files, it's a gut wrenching feeling when you loose that data! I was lucky this time and won't want to repeat it for a second time! R👍

Hi Rich, I enjoyed this vlog. I like your way of doing backups. Makes sense having your files backed up to more than one hard drive 👍🏽

Such a timely video Richard. My wife and I had a super conversation on backing up our photos. Since we both have a lot of images and we don't have a network system in the house we basically duplicate our backups very similar to how you do it. My only additional issue is a paranoia of having a house fire or something extreme that damages everything in the house. So I have a 2tb lacie drive that is stored off site (used to keep it in my desk at work but retirement meant I needed a different option) and, yes this is extreme, when we travel I leave a 2tb backup in a pelican case in our garden shed. I know it is extreme but I sleep better at night!!

Thanks for watching Peter and nice to hear you also backup your files, and off site option is something I will also do as you never can tell when disaster can strike! Like the idea of a Peli case in the shed! Top tip. Cheers Rich

Have a look at the Synology DS418 as an affordable option for NAS. It is only a 4 bay rather than 5 but the beauty of Synology is you can swop out the hard drives for bigger ones as the budget allows, or indeed start with only 2 of the bays populated (you lose redundancy with less than 3 populated) - fairly cheap reconditioned direct from Synology direct 😀

Thanks very much Paul for sharing your experiences and for the info on the DS418 I will certainly take a look at it. All the best R

Great reminder Rich, I have my old Black and White negatives 35mm from the days when I was lucky enough to have a custom built Dark Room. Needing to get them digitally remastered as I'm sure they would have a shelf life, and some of my best work. When I Was Young, still listening to the ANIMALS 👍

Thanks for those great tips Richard, three days ago I somehow managed to delete a folder with 4oo images that I was to lazy to back up but luckily I always keep tne original images on the SD cards that I never throw away once full but will take ages so sort out and edit all over again 😢. Thanks for the very interesting info on the different hard drives, this was such a great useful video to watch, thanks for sharing 👍, have a great week ahead 😊

Hi Richard. Have a look at unraid, turn a old pc into a nas. I built one last year even with new parts and still works out a lot cheaper and it’s upgradable

Best thing is you can add extra hdd later. I have 3 8tb hdd, Two for storage and one for the backup then next year i can add another 8tb hdd for storage and along as the backup hdd is same size or bigger. unraid will redo the backup. All the other ones you have to get all the hdd at the start.@@RichardBirchett

Richard, there is no more sickening feeling when you realize that you have lost all your images. Two years ago I lost mine from the late 90's until that time. My only saving grace, was that I had copied all my files to an external drive and given it to my daughter to keep at her house. I had forgotten that at the time as I was scrambling to recover my lost images. Fast forward, I was able to recover all my Raw files and some of my older Jpeg files. Since then I now use a direct connect NAS 48 Tb Raid backup system. I also copy my files to a 10 TB external drive for now until I exceed the 10TB limit. I do cull excess images to keep that level in check. I am looking into a Standard NAS system. I use QNAP systems which was given a good review. My current direct connect system set me back about $2500. The Standard NAS is estimated to run me about $5000.

Thanks for watching Mark, it's an awful feeling and one I wouldn't wish on anyone! So sorry you've had this experience also. Nice to have a backup at another location, I will be doing the same for sure! Sounds like you've got a great system there and one which will serve you well going forward. Blimey, that's some serious money but to have it gives you a warm feeling and not wanting to repeat what happened to me it's the way forward! Cheers for sharing. Rich 👍

I bought Belkin card reader ..soley for the purpose of being able to access the pics taken on the 5DSR . The Card reader isn't recognised by the PC . Even bought a external 2tb HD again not recognised by the PC . Even tho i use Win10 . Bought a new PC Months ago it went fubar after installing Win11 Blue screen of death .... Only thing that works with my PC is the Sandisk 256Ggb Flashdrives ..

Blimey, bit of a nightmare, I forgot you had a 5DSR, such a beast of a camera and reminds me I really need to get out and use mine at some point this Spring. Oh dear, it's never good when the Tech gets slow and stops working! I've since got two G-Speed Shuttle SSD thunderbolt 3's as my backup, a happy chap now, lol.. Cheers Rich

Someone told me that a backup isn't really a backup unless it is stored offsite. I back up regularly to a large drive that is stored safely out of the house in case of theft/fire /flood etc.

Hilarious ... the LaCie CoPilot Boss I bought 4 years ago is not in production anymore and I have been looking for them for some time ..but due no availability .. and you come uo with this option in 2024 ... hilarious ! Well for U.S.A you are lucky .. 2 oldies still avail on Amazon... not over here in Europe . I still use my one when going to Africa.

Thanks very much for your comment, noted. I love old tech! Lasts longer than the current rubbish they produce. I’ve now got a new system. Cheers Rich 👍
