Point to mention: None contain butter. They all use a "spread" and is basically some emulsified oil with or without some hydrolysing to stiffen it up. It's fine tho, as long as they are not cheezy garlic bread that only contains potato-flour and oils as a "topping" type cheeze like substance. That's where I draw the line.

They are probably made by the same company, the only difference is the packaging. I've tried Aldi's garlic bread slices which were delicious. What you didn't compare was their crunchiness. Garlic bread is best when you bite into it, and hear it crunch as you masticate. Yummy. Garlic bread slices are on my shopping list next time I'm in Aldi.

Not quite the same. Aldi and Tesco versions are vegan, the Asda one had skimmed milk. But maybe they just come from the same factory and they adjust the recipe on the day they make them for Asda.

They are indeed made by the same factory , roughly 180 packets per minute , they produce the different allergen products on different machines but still within the same production hall , i believe that's why they put " may contain milk" on vegan products to cover themselves as they also run cheese products here. pretty neat set up fully automated system from mixing the dough until packaging injected baguettes

When i used to buy those types of garlic bread, i would put a chunk of cheese into the slice slots. I normally get ciabbata garlic breads now though as its easier to cook and comes in smaller pieces which can be cooked or stored as you require. Plus adding abit of cheese too those works also if you wish.

Well Gareth, there’s no arguing about the price of these products but I would still prefer to create my own. I like the Demi- baguettes from Lidl with my own homemade garlic butter with mixed herbs fresh from the garden and as much garlic as I fancy all folded into a packet of room temperature butter and formed into a sausage shape wrapped in cling film and slipped into the fridge to firm up, for myself I prefer to split the bread from one end to the other and spread the butter all over the full length, it makes it easier to add some grated cheese and the whole thing doesn’t fragment when I lift it out onto a plate, but it does work out to be more expensive, swings and roundabouts at the end of the day.

it's really so blooming easy to make these things yourself that they are kind of lazy, given how much better they are when made with real butter. You can mash some butter and garlic together in minutes, and part-baked baguette are less than £1 for two at most supermarkets. Just half-slice them, squodge your butter mix in and bake it. You can really pimp it by buying the posher sourdough part baked baguettes, which are still way cheaper than a ready made premium equivalent

prices in supermarkets have little to do with production cost. It's what the consumer is willing to pay for the product. Most people can live without garlic bread, not many people can live without regular bread. So they're able to charge much more for regular bread. Also regular bread is usually fresh (to be sold on the same day) while garlic bread is designed to keep longer. Lower losses for the manufacturer/retailer as they don't have to throw it out next day.

Now I just buy a freshly cooked baguette and make my own garlic butter spread. Recently I have found myself buying the garlic and cheese flatbread from Lidl. They go with a lot of different meals. Hi Gareth, We both love your channel and look forward to seeing your good lady wife on the channel one day. We used to buy garlic bread but we now prefer garlic flatbread. It may be a little more expensive, but, we get 6 pieces which are bigger than the garlic bread The reason they say, 'may contain...' is because the factory will manufacture other foodstuff and although they try hard not to cross contaminate you can never be totally sure. If they did not have this wording then they would have no defence if taken to court by someone suffering an allergic reaction.

I worked 10 years a bakery who was supplying every supermarket and small shop and i would have been surprised that you found find any difference as the recipes for the dough is the same. The differences start when the bread look different like a bread slices or when it's advertised with special dietary restrictions like low fat the dough will be different but those 3 are the same at 100%. The way they cut prices on some compare to other is with the garlic butter. An expensive garlic baguette will have a more garlic butter and of better quality, something more ingredients or better quality ingredients like butter instead of margarine.

Not a fan of that type of garlic bread, prefer the larger slices or to make my own, always find those a bit doughy in the middle.

Love this comparison. 37p or not I really rate the Tesco and Aldi. I know you don't have a Lidl near you but I rate it too

andu talk of going to ya closest shop, is a good point , sure some things may be 1p 2p cheaper or more in other stores ,but is it worth the fuel costs and time of travel

When I realised there was no actual butter involved I must admit I had a bit of a shudder. I’m really bad at reading ingredient lists but that stuff is a reminder that I really ought to. Yeuch!

Garlic bread you can't go far wrong it would have to be a real cheapo to get a bad one, great with all kinds of food a nice bit of very mature cheddar mind and I reckon you have the king of snacks.

My lad can't have dairy so the cheap and cheerful garlic bread is perfect. I do prefer the proper butter ones though.

Now you've picked on something I never buy anymore but I do love garlic. I add it to my butter quite often and toss in my salmon and steaks. There's something I've never seen you do, salmon.

Can`t go wrong for 37p and I eat half freeze half as on a diet so 2 goes for me. By the way Gaz your gonna have to watch your reflections now the suns shining cos if you look at your oven door you can see your washing in front of your washing machine. 🙂
