This is a video of some low-cost modifications I made to an inexpensive used fishing kayak. I have a nice aluminum boat but wanted a good way to access more hard-to-reach areas on smaller creeks or ponds. I wasn’t willing to go spend the money for a more expensive name-brand fishing kayak like an Ascend 12T or Perception Pescador. I had been using my Dad’s Equinox 12’ sit-on-top when he couldn’t paddle due to an injury and for my needs it was perfect, and I really liked it. I kept my eyes open to buy a used one of my own but couldn’t locate one, so I ended up buying a used Field & Stream Eagle Talon for $280. I did not like the Field & Stream as well and didn’t use it much. Then one day I saw this used boat for sale for only $200 and it appear to be in nice shape. It was identical to the one my Dad has except it was a different color, so I went a bought it. I then advertised the Field & Stream and was able to sell it for $350, which gave me a few bucks to spend on mods for the Equinox. All in all, it’s been a fun project and I now own a decent setup for a total cost of less than $450, not including the sonar, the braided line snips, and various other items such as zip ties and paracord which I list below but already owned prior to purchasing this boat.
Of course, there is always more that can be done, and eventually I will probably add some gear track to each side for more rod holder options, a mount for a dedicated sonar, and who knows what else. But for a low-cost starter fishing kayak I am very happy with what I’ve got at this point.
