In this episode, I'll show you how to drop the engine and transmission out of an aircooled 911 using basic tools, without a lift! I tried to walk through every notable step of engine removal, let me know if I missed anything!
Tools Used:
Motorcycle/ATV Jack on Amazon:
amzn.to/2UzhZ39
amzn.to/3n3Sxzl
Engine Yoke:
amzn.to/3x1iM0X
Wrenches:
30mm: amzn.to/3guVkPF
36mm: amzn.to/3n7ZhfI
*NOTE REGARDING THE CLUTCH ARM: Most instructions say you need to remove the large clutch arm, and it should drop off that shaft after removing the circlip and smaller clutch arm. Well, mine would not move. I am not sure how many hours I wasted on this. I tried torching it, hammering it, prying it, and then I discovered that there is a retention pin holding it onto the shaft. So I tried pounding that out, no dice. It just isn't moving and difficult to access. I tried using an air chisel, still no dice. Turns out.... just leave it on there. You can flip it towards the front of the car, the over center spring will snap it forward, which disengages the clutch. If you don't do this, the engine and trans will be difficult to separate.
Thanks for watching and please share any thoughts or comments you have!

Join me as I stumble along rebuilding the drivetrain of my 77 Porsche 911S. To be honest, I have no idea what I'm doing. I've never owned an aircooled car before this one, there's a huge learning curve, and I've been avoiding this since I bought the car years ago. I can't afford to pay 911 prices on things, so I'll be doing as much of the work myself as possible.
Although the car ran and drove okay, the amount of leaking, smoking, and general neglect of the drivetrain finally needs to be addressed.
I'm just a hobbyist mechanic, and I've never torn into an aircooled car before, so I'm really clueless on most of this stuff. Would appreciate any support or tips; if you see me doing something incorrectly, let me know! I apologize for some of the production quality in this video, it's very difficult to get decent lighting/footage while working under a car with only about 12" of space.

This looks like a hell of a job for one person with no lift. Very impressive.

You poor guys in the US, having to deal with crazy bumper and crazy emissions restrictions. Thought I'd actually watch this brilliant series as well, nice!

Great video and project, great job so far. I would love a 911 project here in the UK but they now fetch silly money unfortunately.

Yeah, it's really unfortunate. I bought mine before the price boom, and it's made owning it a lot more obnoxious. Originally planned to do a 3.2 swap but now that is also unaffordable. I hope the prices come back down to more reasonable levels; I don't plan on selling so I don't care what they are worth.

You should definitely invest in a set of Knipex Plier Wrenches. They're like adjustable water pump pliers but don't have teeth so you can grip and break loose various sized nuts, bolts and fittings without damaging them. Plus you won't need to buy so many different wrenches. Looking good so far though. 👌

Thanks! I'll look into them!

That’s good you successfully remove the fan from the alternator but you should’ve went to a machine shop and had it pressed off, that would’ve only taken a few minutes unless chance of damaging your alternator. too bad you can’t upgrade to the 11 bladed cooling fan. Great job that’s a lot of work I need to do the same thing to my 911.

Great upload always loved Porsche growing up in late 70s and early 80s had 9_11 posters and always wanted one. Now that the prices have gone insane and most JDM run flawlessly for 100k I'll enjoy watching you fix this. I can't help but think what the hell was the engineering team smoking when designing these leaky overcomplicated things?
@ADDvanced
@ADDvanced 3 года назад
It was just evolving really old pre ww2 aircooled VW engines...adding two more cylinders... then just adding more displacement, finding weaknesses, fixing those, etc. One of the things that makes 911s iconic is the very slow, but continual evolution from 1963-1999. Incremental changes the entire time, but never a totally clean sheet, starting from scratch design. So basically it's a pre 1940 engine, taken to the extreme.

@@ADDvanced Thanks for the reply the grandson and I have enjoyed watching your journey. One thing that really surprising me is watching the Porsche engines being disassembled seems like there isn't actually what we call a block. Just multiple layers building off the crank held together with tons of bolts explains the oil leaks. I still want one someday but prices are insanity IMO.

@@kylekayser2291 Yeah I bought this one right before the prices went all stupid. I do not think they are worth what people are getting. But classic Mini coopers? Dude. Most fun car ever. I miss mine. 38hp.

New Subbed from GJ! Great vids 👍 I would highly recommend, since you have low ceilings like mine, a mid-rise lift. I bought the Harbor Freight one, have had it over 7 years, and its been great. Dropping air-cooled Beetle engines is a 25 minute job. You can use the 20/25% Off coupon those too.

Those oil line suck, same with the thermostat. I just buy a new thermostat if I ever have to remove them. I run the finned brass oil line from elephant to help a little with cooling. Mine is a 930 though so you may get away with skipping it if yours arent dented.

Great Video ! At 11:36 you put a piece of wood under the car. Where it is located on the body of the car? Are there rubber somewhere between the wood an the car? Where? Would be helpful for "my project". Thank you very much !!!
@ADDvanced
@ADDvanced 3 года назад
Under the car, across the middle, rear most part of the pan. Wood spreads out the load, no rubber really necessary for that, especially without the weight of an engine or trans. Cheers man and good luck!
