Budgettip! Use old cd cases to hold your copper tape (5,7mm max). Cut out a small bit so you can pull the tape out. It works soooo good!!!!

Nice video, but I wouldn't recommend the carborundum stone to file the edges even without some sort of lubricant. It will create tiny cracks in the edges of the glass that could cause a run once you start soldering, not to mention that it makes it much harder to foil. A glass grinder, as you point out, starts at about $100, but is a necessary expense, IMO. Sometimes you can find a used one online. I picked up both of my grinders used for less than $50.

Good list. I found if you want to have a good experience pick the best you can afford. I ended up rebuying most items after working with glass for a while and regret not getting better stuff earlier. I don’t hardly ever use those breaking pliers and love both of the Toyo glass cutters. They make stained glass much more enjoyable along with a good grinder

Good budget-friendly list. I am with Quoc Ta on buying the best you can afford if you already think you will get hooked. I have virtually replaced all the cheaper stuff I bought at the beginning as I found the better the cutter, cleaner the breaks. The only original item I am still using is the soldering iron I picked up at a big box hobby store for $25. I am going to replace it soon with a Hako iron. I have vastly expanded what I have now because it is such a great art form. I got hooked after the first project. If you are really unsure about stained glass then take Sarakit's advice and get the minimum. It is a chance you will have to take. 👍😁🉐

I just discovered your channel, thank you for what you do! I couldn't find a good guide on how to start and mostly what to use. I've been doing little terrariums since years now, i started by buing the glass cutter, and i was just gluing the pieces with hot glue, it was not working well to say the least haha. Then i updated to silicone, kind of like aquariums could be made, and as I was diving deeper into it, i discovered people were using this fancy copper tape, and a solder... It was hard to find actual advice for noobs, but thanks to you I now know what is about. Thank you! and you make beautiful stuff too :)

Unless you're soldering for a living there's very little reason to spend this much on a soldering iron. I've used a 5£ aliexpress one regularly for years and never needed anything better. The best one I've used is the pinecil which I've built from a kit for like 50 quid. I've used stations costing hundreds of pounds and the pinecil is still the one I like best.

Thank you again for all the videos, i'm about to buy all of the stuff I need to start. I just have one concern, it's about safety. Do I need a mask while i'm soldering? I feel like there's a lot of chemical fumes going on while you work on that, and i'm not sure. I've seen people recomend wearing just a simple surgical mask, and maybe gloves, but i've also seen people doing everything without any of them, so idk, I might just use a mask as a precaution. what do you think?
@StainedGlassDIY
@StainedGlassDIY 3 года назад
I wear a mask when I solder bc I'm in a garage. If out in the open air then I might not. But for sure it's not good to breathe this stuff. You can also direct the fumes with a fan. The filter and mask and everything I use can be found on kit.co/stainedglassdiy
