That sounds exactly like our Misty and Blue at the start 😂 They had one swing and fought over it, so we got another swing and they still fought over the same swing 🤣 Then I put another swing and a bit more space between the swings and they fought a bit less. But in the end I think it's also part of budgie behavior to fight over swings and food 😋

@@misty_blue the worst is when your watching a movie! Haha love em tho, we keep ours in a Parrot cage indoors which docks with our aviairy outside (for warmer days). They actually put themselves to bed every night and we wheel them back indoors.

I've noticed it's especially important to spend time with them daily, preferably with routine because they love it when they know what to expect. Question to the master: Is it correct to give them a little bit of an boiled egg??? 🧐🧐

@@miriam7610 yes it can give them some important vitamins, fats and proteins 😊 Especially budgies that are a bit underweight or when they might lay eggs and raise chicks will benefit from egg. For young birds it's also good. You could even try adding small bits of the egg shell for some calcium. Our birds refuse to eat boiled egg, but they do eat some egg food from the pet store (which I think is less nutritious, but I guess it's better than nothing). If you think your birds already get enough proteins and fats or if they are overweight, they probably don't need boiled egg.

I've seen other birds too who don't really chirp but only talk. I guess they see the 'talking' as just another form of chirping 😋

There's a few things that made our birds more lively: - First, they got a bigger cage. Especially our male started singing a lot more. But if your cage is already big enough, that can't be it - We started taking videos and pictures of them. Somehow they found it easier to interact with the phone than with us 😋 But it might be because the phone is a bit reflective so they could see themselves in it - Sometimes playing budgie sounds helped. I like the video from Mango and Chutney. But some birds get nervous from budgie videos - We started doing click training. They became more social and their behavior improved generally - We got two other birds. Having a flock made the biggest difference for us. Now they sing from early morning until evening. But I get that it's not always an option Apart from all those factors, time and patience are most important I think. We thought our Misty would never leave the cage and never interact with anyone. But after about a year she finally opened up. Now she's a completely different bird 😊 I hope your budgie will improve!

@@misty_blue this helped me feel better I’m worried my budgie just won’t like me I know it’s only been a week also from petco wings clipped but is pretty decently active in the cage not sure of gender too young as well to tell! My budgie goes back and forth from feeling comfortable with my hand to not comfortable going to have a better living situation in a month or two so hopefully the space to fly and stuff will help as well but I’m for sure hoping my budgie will be comfortable with me before that happens I’m just a worry wort I don’t want my budgie to hate me but I’m pretty sure it was just from being man handled prior to getting man handled again when I chose the little fella poor thing pooped in the box I’m already spoiling my birdie with toys even have stuff for the next time to replace somethings and move other things around! Treats as well I have like 5 different ones see what he/she likes! I’m trying to best and seeing both you and the other persons comments helped me feel better about it!

I noticed the same thing when we first got our Misty and Blue. I suspect that maybe they were calling for the other birds they were living with in the pet store (wondering where there friends suddenly went). It's very normal that they are anxious in their first days. Our birds liked hearing budgies singing in a RU-vid video. But try carefully because sometimes they only get more anxious because of it. Our birds needed several days to discover millet sprays. I just placed it in the same spot every day until one day I saw our Blue eating it. Misty followed after she saw how much Blue loved it. A trick I saw for getting them used to your hands: The first days spend as much time as possible near their cage, talking kindly to them, but not going into their cage unnecessarily. After a few days, start placing your hand on top of their cage several times per day. Just place it there for a while without moving it. Then they learn your hand is not there to grab them. After they get more comfortable, start by partly placing your hand in the cage, somewhere a bit further from them. With each next step, move a bit closer. Once they get to know millet sprays, you can place that on your hand to convince them to come to your hand. Just keep your hand still and let them carefully touch your hand to see if it's safe. Generally with budgies time and patience is key. And making sure to speak kindly and move slowly. I hope your budgies will get more used to you! ☺️

It can be quite tricky with biting. We currently have several young budgies and some of them like to bite as well. I think it's because their mom also kinda has that habit. We are trying to stop them from biting but we're not quite sure how to do it either. I saw one breeder who kind of shakes the hand when they bite to teach them to stop. But so far it didn't look like it worked for our budgies. Another bird owner said it can help to scream when they bite because that's what birds do themselves when another bird bites them, but I'm not sure about that method either 😅 I saw one book that recommend click training to unlearn biting, but it's quite time consuming. I think the idea is to encourage positive behavior and then they slowly switch from bad behavior to good. So, whenever she's not biting but doing something you approve of, you click and reward her (with her favorite treat) and when she bites you don't click and don't reward. Then she starts doing the behavior that gets her the treats. But yeah, it needs a lot of time and focus. I hope you can find a method that works for you! I've noticed with our flock some birds kinda have it in their genes to bite and some not at all. But even if they have it in their genes, I'm sure you can still correct it 😊 Do you know the channel birdtricks? I know she also uses click training to correct bad behavior. Maybe she has a good video on it.

Yeah I've discovered that it's not actually a 'female sound' 🤣 It's just that the males we had back then didn't make the sound so I thought it was something from females. But some of our new males also make the sound so it's very possible your budgie is a male 😊

Do you only have one budgie? Maybe he just does it to check he's not alone and to get some attention. Sometimes they also do it when they feel rain or a storm coming, but I guess that's something different. Ours also do it when they hear a sound they find strange or when they see birds outside. But sometimes I really don't know why they are calling like that 😅

Hmmm, sounds interesting 🧐 I suspect it’s that it tries to show some dominance because by nature it feels vulnerable so it wants to hide that by screaming. Like it’s warning you before and after that it’s stronger than it might look. At least, I’ve seen them do similar things where they try to dominate each other 😋

I know how you feel! It was similar for us when we got our first two budgies. They’re very territorial, sensitive animals. I’ve noticed that time, space and a clear routine are very important. They don’t like change, so I try to keep things the same as much as I can. If I need to change something, I always do it in the morning because that’s when they’re least sensitive. I think it can help your budgie when his environment stays the same the coming weeks so he can really get used to it 😊 They also like it when you feed them more or less at the same time every day so they know what to expect. With time, he should get more relaxed. It’s also important to approach him with care and without sudden movements. But the first weeks you might just want to give him time to get used to his cage. You can talk to him in a higher pitched voice whenever you’re around him because they trust others more when they’re not too quiet. It can also help to wink with both eyes and turn your head. Maybe it sounds silly, but it’s like mimicking their body language and then they tend to trust you more. I hope your little buddy will soon feel more relaxed! 😊

Yes I've seen budgie owners who trained their birds to talk 😊 From what I've read and heard it depends on these factors: - Is the bird alone or with others. If they're alone, they more likely start mimicking humans because they have no birds to mimick (but I personally think birds should always have at least one bird friend) - Whether it's male or female. Males are best at learning to talk - How much time you spend talking to your birds. They can only learn words that are repeated a lot and on a regular basis. I'm sure there are more factors, but I'm not an expert on this topic 😇 I think our budgies don't talk because we weren't spending as much time with them at the start and they were always with other birds. One tactic I saw from an experienced breeder: take one bird on your finger every day, and take him kind of separate from others. Then hold him near your face and repeat the same words several times. It works best if you do it several times a day. However, our bird's happiness should always go first, so before trying this, we should make sure they are tame enough and we should only do it if we see that they are enjoying the training 😊

We had just one budgie for six months and he started talking. We recently got another budgie and they love each other! I recommend having at least two, they are super social birds.

@@misty_blue my male budgie was a rescue that I saved from getting run over on a busy street. I put him I a Cage I had while trying to find his owner. No one was looking. I always went to his cage and showed him how to play with the toys o gave him. I spoke to him all the time. Placed my hand in his cage and didn't move it or just tapped his toy. He started playing with me. He hopped onto my hand then over it to get to his toy or to eat millet I was holding. I didn't want him to get bored until I found out what to do with him. No one called and no one wanted him. I started enjoying my time with him so 8 gave him a name. Beakeeto. I said pretty beakeeto, pretty bird. Every day. Fast forward 6 weeks. I heard him forming throat sounds when I was heading to his cage. I knew right away. He was going to tall. Sure enough. He said the phrase above. After that he was like a sponge. He learned one new phrase every weak. He would come close to my lips to listen, whether he was in his cage or on my shoulder or while I did housework. He was almost as good as disco, just not as clear. He wasn't the larger English budgie. So lots of trills in between words. My little guy bonded with me and became a real chattakeet. Over 350 words and he spoke in context and mimicked expression or body language too. He was my best friend. Such a happy bird, he would rather be with me, and called my IRN a dumb ass bird. Lol. I can never replace that bond

You can try click training to teach it to step on your finger. On your shoulder is a bit harder. Only budgies that are alone or budgies that were hand tamed as babies might do that. But they only do it when they feel like it since it's not part of their natural behavior. I think sitting on your shoulder is not really useful for much so I would focus on letting it perch on your finger first.

Glad you liked it! If I remember correctly, the cage is around 1 meter in height, 70cm in width and perhaps 90cm in length. I'd have to measure it tomorrow to make sure. Maybe I'm very wrong in my guesses 😋

It sounds exactly like what we went through with Misty. The other three learned quite fast to go back inside at sunset, or at least we were able to lure them, but Misty was very hard. When it got too dark, she couldn't find the cage door anymore. The first couple of times, we caught her, but it was stressful and we really didn't like it. I felt very desperate too so I tried many things. This is what worked for me: I would close the bird room door, turn on the light (if it was already quite dark in the room) and then stand behind the cage, so on the opposite side of the cage door. Then I would very slowly and carefully move my arms in the direction of the cage door, gently 'pushing' (without touching) her towards that direction. I turned on the light because only that way she could see where she was going. She would walk to the 'door side' of the cage, and then I would slowly keep gesturing in that direction, until she would find the door and climb/fly inside. My husband helped the first time, because she was very stubborn. We both stood there with our arms over the cage, gesturing her in the right direction. The first times felt ridiculous and took long. But after minutes she would finally find the door and I didn't have to touch her. Then, she started recognising the gestures, and she knew, it's really time to go inside. The last time I had to use this method, she flew inside within seconds. I just had to stand behind the cage and put up my arms 😋 And after several weeks, she has learned going in and out of the cage and she goes independently every day 😁 Of course, it depends on your cage set up and the budgie, but maybe this will work for you. I sure hope so! It might feel desperate at first, but budgies can really learn sign language and things like that 😊

I think the soft cute squeaks are more about affection, contentment and such positive emotions 😊 Our Misty also started doing those when she's very happy and relaxed or when she is responding to us. It's very cute 😍 I think when they're stressed or territorial they make a louder, more fast paced 'squeaking' noise. So I think your female budgie is fine 😄

Their body language is also very helpful in knowing if they are happy. For instance, when they look quite fluffy and like a little ball, it usually means they're relaxed and comfortable. When they look very thin with their wings tight to their body, they are usually alert. (but of course it depends on every situation 😊).

@@misty_blue well sometimes her feathers are flat and she does look scared but after a minute of talking to her she fluffs up for cheeks some and looks happy and start her little squeeks. She definitely doesn't sound like she does when the male annoys her.. Lol!! I know that chirp!! I talk to them a lot!! I've had parakeets basically my whole life but this is the 1st time I have 2 in the same cage so it's harder to train them. I never had a parakeet squeek like she does. It's adorable!! ❤️

Hmm… that’s very interesting behaviour indeed 🤔 Maybe he’s got too many hormones or he’s feeling bored… maybe you can give him things (or attention) to give him more mental stimulation. Budgies need to be entertained daily because they have very active brains. Perhaps it would help him if he has chew toys or foraging toys. Or wood and plants to chew, like wild grass. Anything to keep him busy 😊

If they are quiet it could mean that they're a bit scared or sick, but not necessarily. Some birds are more quiet than others. Our Misty and Mini are super quiet. I hardly ever see them sing or talk. But most males do sing more.

It's possible that she is just testing your hands to see if they are safe. Another reason for biting is testing the boundaries, seeing how far she can go. I read it's especially common for female budgies to bite to see who has most authority. Sometimes they just bite out of playfulness. You can try showing her with a clear signal or one clear command (like 'no') that she's not supposed to bite. I saw one breeder who kinda shakes of the budgie when it bites, but in a very gentle manner. Basically moving the hand up and down to tell the budgie to stop biting. I hope you can find something that works! 😊

I think it should be fine 😊 All birds are different in the end. Now I think about it, family of us have budgies and their male budgie was also doing that go away call when I saw him as a younger bird. I've also noticed they learn sounds from other budgies, so maybe your budgie learned that from another bird 😊 Our Misty and Mini recently learned to make a new sound, so they are very dynamic like that 😋

Sometimes they bite when they become hormonal. During mating season budgies can show very unexpected behavior, but they usually turn back to normal after a while. Sometimes it also helps when they have a partner or friend to interact with. They somehow need to express themselves and their desires.

Ok thank you I should really be asleep it's 3 am but he had a little friend I honestly don't know if they love each other or not because the girl is so mean to him sometimes but the do a lot of cute things too so I honestly don't know and I hope he goes back to normal and not stays grumpy

I think he'll be ok 😊 Our birds went through mean phases as well. Even now, they sometimes fight, but moments later they're best friends again. I think it's how they interact with each other generally. Of course it's different if you see blood or if they pluck each other's feathers out. That's not ok. But if they just scream at each other and peck each other, it's ok.

I think the chance is higher that it's a female, but I've also heard a male make that noise, so it's not 100% sure. Females are usually more territorial, so they are more likely to become defensive and make such noises. I've also noticed that our females' feet are a bit more pinkish and the nails a bit more white. And they are a bit quieter than our males. They also interact a bit less with other birds. Our males are constantly talking to each other 😋

It can be for different reasons 😋 Generally it’s how budgies interact with each other. Sometimes it’s affection, sometimes it’s playfulness, and sometimes it’s a type of fighting, but nothing very serious 😊

The best way to know is by looking at the cere. A female adult has a brown or white cere, a male adult has a (dark) blue cere. Maybe I can make a video about it one day with examples :)
