In the village of Budhpura, Rajasthan, where the majority of men once worked in sandstone mines, only widows remain. Rajasthan produces 70 percent of India’s sandstone, much of which is exported to countries like Germany and the UK for construction and landscaping. However, many workers in these mines have fallen victim to silicosis, a fatal lung disease caused by inhaling fine dust particles from the rocks. Budhpura is now known as the "village of widows" as most of the men have succumbed to the disease. With the sandstone mining industry largely unorganised and operating on a small scale, millions of unprotected and uneducated labourers are exposed to this life-threatening condition. Despite the risks, mining remains the only means of livelihood for many in the region, forcing them to endure hazardous working conditions to support their families.
