Buffalo Bore 44 Magnum +P+ 340 grain in Ruger Redhawk

Shooting the hottest load sold in 44 Magnum, Buffalo Bore's +P+ in 340 grain. This while hiking in the mountains of Idaho. I later chronographed the rounds, and found in my Ruger Redhawk 5.5 inch barrel, they averaged 1,300 fps, which converts to an energy of almost 1,300 foot-lbs; considering that even while reloading, my 5.5" barrel only gets to maybe 950 ft-lbs at most, that is incredible! I later dissected a bullet and found it to have approximately 21 grains of powder. I compared the powder to many of my experimental magnum powders; the characteristics seemed identical to Hodgdon's Lil'Gun. Even under a microscope, they seemed indistinguishable. However, I have loaded 240 grains to a max of only 18 grains of powder, so 21 grains would really be pushing the limits, especially for a 340 grain bullet! This is especially evident when you consider the rounds were stuck in the cylinder after firing! There is clearly printed a disclaimer warning not to use these rounds in certain guns, Smith & Wesson being one.
I am using a Kenai Chest Holster, which worked outstandingly during my adventure.

Not just bear. I used the BB +P+ 340gr on a charging bull moose out of a Super Blackhawk with a 5.5 barrel, no pain or ear ring (adrenaline) I was more nervous explaining the situation to the game warden but after the evidence on the ground and the fact he dropped exactly 9 yards from where I was standing, no tree to climb, waist high brush to thick to run through plus 6~7" standing water in the brush, the warden looked at me and said you're lucky. No, I wasn't allowed to claim the moose.

The super Redhawk has much better aftermarket grips available. The limitation is the shape of the frame. That’s the reason I sold my Redhawk and got the superRedhawk. suddenly those hot loads don’t feel nearly as hot. The factory recoil absorbing grips on the super Redhawk make all the difference.

I used to have a Redhawk. I used it for handgun metallic silhouette shooting. After 40 rounds of full power loads (240 to 300 grain) for a single match, it left my thumb bruised. I switched to a Super Blackhawk Bisley. No pain. The shape of the grip makes all the difference. And, since I could never squeeze off two in a row quickly enough to make double-action worthwhile, single action is just fine.

Thank you, very informative. 1) when searching for my desired Ruger Redhawk 5.5, unable to find one anywhere, I bought a Model 29-3, great looking, collectors-type gun. Should not have shot it but did. HATED IT! Too light, recoil jump, could not shoot many beforehand became sore. 2) finally, a friend turned up a Redhawk 5.5 and LOVE IT. Shoots hand-loaded .44 like they are 9mm, can shoot a box of a hundred no problem.
@jakebrake1968
@jakebrake1968 2 года назад
Rounds like that should never go through a model 29 Smith & Wesson. As much as I love Smith & Wesson revolvers, they cannot handle a load that hot. There are entirely too many small parts in a model 29 that get battered. You'll destroy that gun within 200 rounds of using that kind of a load.

I would prefer the Super Redhawk with the full rubber Hogue grip for a .44 Magnum! The Redhawk is great no higher than shooting .357. The cushioned back strip the Super Redhawk has lessens the thump in the grip.

I've been debating on upgrading to those or 305gr underwoods. I carried 305gr HSM's (rated at 1225fps) in my Redhawk 5.5 in the elk woods last year. I don't see why people in the comments suggest the pachmyer and Hogue grips. I bought both and they are freakishly huge. Not only do they make holding the gun difficult, they didn't do anything for me for felt recoil. Idk maybe everybody's different. I've never seen a gun with grips that big. I went back to the rosewood grips.
@OutSciEd
@OutSciEd 4 года назад
I had the Pachmeyer grips, but you are right - I have huge hands and even those were so large they were awkward. I found the rubber would catch more on my coat and possibly slow a quick draw if necessary. They were innovative in their time being an aftermarket add-on, but that was before polymer and modern plastics had an edge in development. For me, even with large hands, I still prefer the feel and quick draw capability of the Redhawk wooden grips. I normally load bullets with 300gr, but they have a lower sectional density, which is a crucial variable for penetration. That is why I like these loads which are 340gr.

Scuff your casings with light sand paper. It will keep them from fire forming to your cylinder walls so tightly. Mechanics of this is the little scuffs keep the casing from creating full contact with the cylinder wall when fired keeping it from friction freezing into the cylinder. It's easier on your extractor too...

.545 Casull, even with light loads, is far more muzzle energy as well as recoil energy. Likewise, the bullets have a lower sectional density. The .44 Magnum with this 340gr has an incredible sectional density that is unmatched. With dangerous game, you need sectional density. Likewise, the 44 can handle much lighter recoiling rounds so I find it to be one of the most versatile handguns out there.

@@OutSciEd Even out of a 45 colt Ruger blackhawk, most 30k loaded bear round will go through a brown bear or bullets stop at it's hip bone. I get 340's@1250 fps, 360's@1200 fps from my 7.5 inch, I own a 44 mag in a LLama, and the above 45 colt, the 45 leave bigger wound channel. I like both the 44's and 45's. But the 45's are to the 44 what the 44 is to the 41.. 45 caliber > 43 caliber > 41, bigger will mean bigger would channel, on the other hand, heavy bullets in smaller calibers penetrate better, a 10mm with a 220g will have better sectional density than a 45 acp SUPER with 250-275g bullets. more penetration, but less wound, This has to be balanced out of course, a 185 HP from my 45 Super at 1700 fps will have great wounding for 6-7 inches, but penetrate poorly. while a 200g WFN cast .357 would penetrate better, and thus be much better for big game like Big bears or charging moose. a 300g WFN cast in my 45 super at 1235 fps has slightly less wounding in the 1st 6-7 inches than the 185 hp, but penetrates like 20x better. Garret offers a 45 colt load of 365g @ 1250 fps 45 colt load that is 35k for Blackhaewks.. and a Redhawk (Freedom arms and BFR) 45k load of a 405g@1250 fps. There isn't a 44 mag on the planet that has the Power factor, wound channel and penetration of that 400g 45 colt load. the BB 44 has more ft lbs in power, but the the 45 colt load has a high power factor, and PF is good scale for penetration. Lighter bullet always have more ft lbs also per caliber. Also once you get over 1250-1350 fps, you don't gain much and actually loose penetration, even hard cast BHN-22 will deform and break apart on bones at 1300-1350 fps. you do gain KO power a little with the velocity above though. I haven't even brought up the 454, but that 45k 45 colt load is only for the 45 colt Redhawk they don't make anymore, so you'll have to fire them out of a Freedom arms 83, or BFR-454. I would go with something with a little less recoil. Getting back to battery and those loads are completely over pressured if they are sticky like that. That’s not good at all. Yes I understand they are only for bear protection in the woods but I worked up some loads for my model 29-2 with a 300 grain jacketed soft point flat nose that aren’t sticky at all that I’m 100 percent sure that would stop a bear no problem, and coming back to battery is pretty quick. That 300 grain bullet is moving at about 1150 FPS by my calculations. Which is more than enough FPS and weight to stop anything in the woods.

Ruger or not, I just don’t like stressing my own firearms. That’s just my own opinion is all. And I certainly don’t like sticky cases. Either which way you look at it, max power or not, coming back to battery is a main factor in any combat situation.

@@zacharywarwick6807 well taking pain out of the equation that helps with coming back on target and the rounds are meant to penetrate for example on one knee missing the head shot and needing to hit vitals instead

240 bonded jhp or soft point at 1500 fps is a better choice than this load...

A +P+ 44 is barely where recoil begins. Try a 5" 475 or 500 Linebaugh and get back to us.

Apples and oranges when you compare the small wooden Redhawk grip.

No... Fuck no... Absolutely not my wrist make me money as a mechanic just learn how to aim and you won't have to use a howitzer as form of defense. Side note probably still cheaper than 9mm ammo right now

Pretty good show but not very real. Yea... it kicks.... it's a 44. What did you expect? God forbid you ever shoot a 454.
@OutSciEd

It's a .44 with almost 30% recoil energy, and if you see, I left the original small wooden grips attached. No large rubber Pachymayer or Hogues were used. All the more fun.

@@OutSciEd I got one of the holsters your wearing and it is almost perfect. Don't even know I have it on. I'm using the Super Blackhawk 7.5" barrel and I just couldn't find anything comfortable to wear for long periods of time. I said almost perfect. It would be perfect if the price was a little lower. Glad I found your channel and still haven't tried the +P+ rounds.

Could you please provide us with your CV, Professor? I just want to know exactly why you feel you're so much more sophisticated than a regular guy enjoying himself trying something new.
