Mayor Byron Brown of Buffalo, N.Y., spoke to MSNBC about the massive winter storm hitting the city. Brown said this dangerously strong snowstorm was unusual, even for the city that is accustomed to strong winter weather.

Lived in Erie County my whole life and I've never seen anything like today and the worst of it is coming tonight. A very heavy all wood 7' tall wishing well garden decoration in our front yard toppled over as if it weighed nothing. It's still laying half buried in our front yard. No joke - we can feel our house shake ALL DAY LONG. Paintings have fallen off the walls. Lost power early on but praise God, it's back on again as we were shivering. I've had such anxiety over this storm. Lots of prayers for mercy going up!

In Buffalo we have what's called a Code Blue and shelters and community centers open with cots, blankets and food for the homeless. They even send a van around to pick up as many as they can. The nickname for Buffalo is "The city of good neighbors" and it's for the most part true.

When you lose your power for an extended amount of time, you learn that those beautiful men who are out there up on those lines working 12-16 hour days are true heroes! I watched a Power-line crew throw the switch on behind my home after 11 days without power once, and I wanted to kiss every one of them! Do what you can for those emergency people by staying in your home as theMayor asks!

I went outside for emergency purposes at 1.30 pm. I walked on B street to go to Fillmore avenue, i needed to go two blocks but after going to one block, I had to make a u turn. I could not even see anything. The skin of my face was exposed and started burning then i ran back one block to my house. This is the situation of Buffalo NY, Stay home .

I live in The City of Buffalo. Those images don’t do justice to how dangerous this storm is. I was 7 during the Blizzard of ‘77. As a kid it was awesome; likely, it was not awesome for my parents. I feel now like they felt then; this is the first time a storm has been frightening.

I was at Michigan State University when it happened. Somebody shoveled a path to the party store... remember the drinking age was 18 back then. I believe it was the first time MSU closed due to weather in the history of the university. We didn't suffer though LOL

I used to work in a hospital and was expected to get there in storms like this. Not new to Buffalo. City hard to drive with people walking in the streets. Schools and old people stay home.

I just came back from Jamaica and today I was out at 9:30 am to 1:30 pm trying to find something to heat my house in case the lights went out all generators sold out at the store. Seen this man on tictok talking about how to heat your house if your power grid is out so I tried to find the items he listed no luck all sold out. Driving was the worst I have ever experienced, I couldn't see a thing. People driving in opposite lanes I was praying all the way home. I hope our lights will be back on tomorrow and I hope everyone stays warm and safe.

A friend flew out of BUF to FLA at 6am. All was fine. If you have a gas stove, fill the largest metal pot(s) you have with water and keep it under the boiling point. We heated our small house for 10 days this way after an autumn blizzard. No small kids here, but that might be a concern for some.

The Mayor is amazing, controlled, and really cares. We're in Califormia's high desert, and we can get winds up to 65 and 75 mph. we get winds in north central montana. We can get gust up to 90 mph. One year we had a wind gust at 152 mph. Wind is common for us to, because of the valley. We are 56 miles from the northern entrance to Yellowstone park. We are warming up from minus 52 below windchill. In the 40 range Christmas day.

There are tornadoes in the south, but the northern part of the United States in places like the Adirondacks and Great Lakes gets wicked sheet winds called micro-bursts and they are devastating. Now imagine 50, 60 mile an hour winds in short, intense 'puffs' flying through the air, several at a time, in freezing temperatures. It's no joke.

@@julieutley2073 Yes, and scary. Google the Great Blowdown in the Adirondacks in the late 1990s. I think it was, like, 1996. Something like 1M trees were toppled. I was there for the storm. The winds sounded like a freight train.

We had a bomb cyclone here about 3 or 4 years ago. It was really something else. Very scary and many trees snapped and thrown around by the wind. I thought my house was going to blow away.

I've lived in MN for 15 years. We DID get hit by a tornado, when wrecked our roof, & had no electricity for 6 days, but our black and white neighbors watched out for us newcomers and made sure we had what we needed. People take care of each other on the Northside of Minneapolis. We lost almost all our big old trees. In a couple days the roads were mostly cleared by people on the block. Who knew so many owned chainsaws? When ambulances couldn't get in the neighborhood, some neighbors checked on a wheelchair bound lady whose tree has just fallen in her living room. The broke the window to get to her, improvised a stretcher, and carried her 1/3 mile to the nearest ambulance-accessible street. Other neighbors boarded up her house an kept watch on it. Red Cross came by with water and sandwiches 5 days after the tornado hit. Since power was out, people held a huge neighborhood barbeque.

One of my close friends went to college in Buffalo. I remember visiting her and seeing all of the underground routes built just so students could get to class during the blizzards. They are used to these things. Please stay safe and warm wherever you are!

my partner lives in niagara county, and he's talked about how many people have been arrested by military police for driving in buffalo under the ban. they don't really salt up in buffalo as much as either of us anticipated when we moved to northwestern NY, either, and he skid out on black ice the other day (he's fine and so is his car), because the plows were out but not laying salt we were living in buffalo county last winter and that wasn't nearly as bad as this year. stay safe, everyone. wear gloves, keep your socks dry, and extend a helping hand to your neighbours
