well these guys had a few others too Still helplessly hoping pretty perfect and Stills guitar on the original just perfect Gorgeous song from the very underrated Richie
I was lucky enough to see them at Santa Barbara the second night. Listen to how quiet the crowd is. Everyone was glued to Richie's performance. Great stuff. Nice post. Stills haunting guitar in the background and Neil at the piano.
The Buffalo Springfield Again album really blew me away when I first heard it in early 1968. "Mr. Soul" melted my brains and "Sad Memory" and "Expecting to Fly" broke my heart.
Great tune... I'm really happy for Richie. I always thought that his musical gifts, while different, were fully the equal of those of Stills or Young. I've always been a big fan of Furay through most of his post Springfield-journey and I hope this remarkable reunion serves to bring him more of the notice, respect and appreciation he is certainly due. And if it puts a little extra cash in his nest egg, all the better...:) Go Richie!
One of my very first albums ever was Buffalo Springfield. I didn't really know what drew me to them. Now I know. Many, many years later I came back to Poco. Why so sad?
What a great group! The genesis of country rock that took out the twangy quality of country music. This group, in its early configuration, defined the country rock identity before the Eagles and all the others that followed on their heels. Unfortunately, they didn't make it quite as big as they should have and after Furay was gone became quite commercial. Richie Furay & Jim Messina who founded Poco, Meisner split early on, both found their roots years earlier with Buffalo Springfield who experimented with country themes mixed with hard driving rock expressions to create this new found sound as early as 1967 on Atco records. What more proof? "Listen to "Just me and you" last track on "From the Inside" LP 1971 and ask yourself if the Eagles borrowed the recipe of Furay's composition in every expression short of plagiarism. Eagles 1st lp debuted nearly a year after.
I forget the year, but Buffalo Springfield was the 1st concert I ever went to. It was at the Univ of San Francisco. I still have a vivid picture in my head of how they looked then. The music was superb & lives on 4 me. IIRC, either the Animals or the Airplane were also on the bill...
In the meantime, I can't believe this has happened. Its really great. I mean, if I found a genie in a bottle, a Springfield reunion would be one of the things I'd ask for. I'm serious... Just as an aside, I've yet to see a set list or video of the reunited band doing "Flying On The Ground Is Wrong". I find that interesting. I wonder if Young held it back. I know he plays it a fair amount on his own tours. Who knows? Just great to see this thing happening. Thanks Genie!
