Buffalo Trace is my go to whiskey. For the price and the fact you can get it in any supermarket along with it being pretty flipping tasty, you can’t complain.

I find that at MSRP it is an excellent bourbon, but when they are charging $45+ it isn't competing with similarly priced bourbons. I'm no expert, but when you place it next to a nice 10 yr bourbon you can tell it's not worth that. Don't buy BT at Eagle Rare prices

In PA it's a nightmare to get since it is state regulated. So many people come asking for buffalo and blantons when we only get like 5 cases every 4 to 6 weeks. It's great for the price being hard to compete with. However, if people around here actually tried different things they would find something they could enjoy on a regular basis. Woodford reserve for example is only 10 bucks more here, and personally I enjoy the flavor more. That being said I love buffalo trace and it's a shame it is so heavily allocated here in Pennsylvania.

A fair review and comparison. I really like BT and have always found the Rye note to make itself known in just the right amount, which is a nice option from something really smooth like Makers. Every whiskey collection needs a "daily drinker" which is best categorized as an economically smart bottle, and BT fits that role. And I can CONFIRM that BT is hard to find in the US right now, along with several of their other labels.

Cheers bud! I need to crack my bottle of Maker’s open to compare it, I considered Maker’s my favourite entry level for a long time but it’s been so long since I’ve actually had a bottle I can’t tell you if that’s really still the case. I’m all for some cheaper options in a collection - it’s nice to enjoy something and know you can replace it super easily and at little cost.

@Deezfuggin
@Deezfuggin 5 месяцев назад
@@andywylde It’s mostly artificial scarcity They limit supply on purpose to increase hype, if a bourbon is sold out everyone will become more desperate for it which increase word of mouth and then sales. That combined with their other marketing efforts, like blantons being drank in John wick and the Buffalo trace soap. Just a whole lot of branding and marketing to increase hype, people here pay 2x msrp or drive hours to get it. Their distillery in general has everything allocated here, Buffalo trace, Blantons, eh Taylor, stagg, old weller, van winkle, all of these have extreme hype here and you should get them if you can for a reasonable price.
@Deezfuggin
@Deezfuggin 5 месяцев назад
@@andywylde Mostly great marketing tbh but Buffalo trace is a great bourbon for the price. It used to be widely available here but I think they limited supply and switch to allocation to increase hype. Allocation also works like a reward system, liquor stores that sell more of the other products from the distillery get rewarded with allocated bottles, which increases their business and popularity.

My go to neat Bourbon pours would be Wild Turkey 101, Buffalo Trace, Elijah Craig, Four Roses Small Batch, and 1792 Small Batch because they are very good values, especially when you can get them under 25 dollars. Bulleit is overpriced at closer to 40 dollars and Woodford Reserve is often closer to 50 dollars, so, I don't recommend those as regular sippers. Every bourbon has a distinct flavor profile, and as long as you don't find something in a bottle that offends you, you can probably find a way to use the contents in a way that maximizes your enjoyment of the bottle.

Here in the UK it's a great alternative to either Jack Daniels #7 or Jim Beam white label with all three being the 80 proof budget options from three of the biggest heritage distillers in America, if I had the choice (of which I do) I would choose BT over JD or JB on any given day ! Besides the fact that I do currently have three bottles in my collection whereas I don't have either of the JD or JB offerings, that speaks volumes really ! Easy drinking, smooth tasting, and a classic bourbon at a great price (normally around the £19 mark at most supermarkets) which is a great introduction to any new bourbon drinker and makes for a great daily sipper for any bourbon aficionado. The nearest I've ever got to it is the Evan Williams black label, which although it is smooth and full of all those classic bourbon flavours it does however lack that certain something (mainly finish tbh) that BT offers. For me (here in the UK anyway) there is no better option for a budget friendly, low proof and has those classic bourbon flavours than the Buffalo Trace Kentucky straight whiskey. Personally I'd love to get hold of a 90 proof version just to try it and see how it fairs at the higher proof point but alas ! Here in the UK it's a hard beast to get hold of and if you do it's pretty darn expensive. It's a staple in my collection (if you hadn't already guessed that, lol), it's so easy drinking it's dangerous......even at just 80 proof, lol.

BT is a funny one, the difference between the UK supermarket 40% version and a barrel pick at 45% is wild, so if you ever get chance, don't be immediately turned off. That said, Eagle Rare is about the same price as the barrel pick, is also 45% and is also BT product so might be wiser to try that first to see if you actually like BT and the standard is just too tame, or if its just not for you at all. I have tried BT after leaving and coming back several times and I know that there is no arguing with taste so i say this. I cannot get into this bourbon although it is certainly drinkable there are a lot of bourbons for less (and slightly more) that are better to my palate. My sweet spot is 100 proof but 90 is fine. I'll take a WT101 over the UK's standard 40% BT any day! However, I have a 45% / 90 Proof BT barrel pick and that is a leap above, much closer to Eagle Rare in quality. the bottle i have here in the states is 45% abv. 90 proof do they proof it down to ship outside the states?
@TheCrumbyBeard
@TheCrumbyBeard 8 месяцев назад
For the UK market at least they certainly do, we can get some store picks which are the usual 45% / 90 proof so I’m going to get one of those to see how big a difference there is. Cheers!

@@TheCrumbyBeard i proofed my pour down with a little water to make it 40% and it thinned out became less sweet less honey and toffee notes and the 45% has a bit more peppery spice on the back end. the mouth feel is less creamy as well.

Used to pick it up for 19.99 but now it’s 26.99 it’s still good at that price but if it goes higher than 30 I’m not interested anymore. I’d rather have wild Turkey 101 for still 19.99 in my area
@TheCrumbyBeard
@TheCrumbyBeard 8 месяцев назад
Oh wow that's a huge difference to here. The RRP on 101 is about double here in the UK, whereas BT is about the same as yours, though at only 80 proof sadly. Cheers!

How much did the Wild Turkey Rare Breed (on the shelf) set you back in the UK, TCB? That's a great pour.

It's around £55-60 ($70-75 USD) at the moment but I'm sure when I picked this up it was on offer around £45 ($55) - I have reviewed it and pitched it against some other bottles. Cheers!

Every Buffalo trace distillery product has become almost impossible to get near me, the one store that I know can consistently get BT gets it once a month and sells out in a day
@TheCrumbyBeard

That's madness! It is good for sure but if it became difficult to get I don't know if I'd put too much effort in to getting it frequently.
