I disagree. I think she really does and he really knows it but as she several times replied to him (no you don't!) so did he to make her feel better. I think that once again he was protecting her against the fear of admitting it and make it true. Obviously, the flame from their hands and Buffy's surprised face/smile mean that she felt again the fire inside herself. The truth is that she feels loved, strong and alive only when touching/staying with him...and LOVE makes us loved/stronger/alive!

@@0MadeYourself It goes to referencing when he said he loved her and she says the same thing to him, no you don't. It's one of those subtle things that is difficult to miss but I have seen other edits that put them back to back those two scenes, to show the emphasis that this was there thing as it were, that deeper knowledge as it were.

I definitevely prefer Buffy with Spike too, with Angel that was as you said her first love quite naive, i love her chemistry with Spike, in reality they're not that different

Old comment but if you get to see this, Spike was brought back for the last season of AtS. Both shows then continued in comics form up to S12. Buffy and Spike start a serious (and healthy!) relationship in seasons 10-11 and it's the happiest they've ever been. They move in together and Buffy even starts envisioning herself having Spike's children and growing old with him. Before they started dating Buffy got the chance to be with Angel but she rejected it. Since then there hasn't been any indication that she's even interested in getting back together with Angel anymore. Buffy and Spike break up between S11 and 12, off-panel, seemingly for no reason and without any explanation. They do, however, agree to leave the door open to get back together again anytime in the future... And that's where they ended them 😊
