I do not condone what spike was about to attempted to do to Buffy but he literally traveled to the other side of the world to get his soul back so he could become a better man for the woman he loved.
Of course, but he wasn't himself when he did that, he was Spike, just Spike (a demon), when he got his soul back he recovered himself, he could be William again. Because that, I love when Buffy in the season 7 calls him William ❤ because she knows the difference between them, like Angel and Angelus.
I dont count the awful thing he did as that was Joss way of trying to ruin Spike bc he didn't fit his wet dreams about Angel and hated the fan reaction

It was a poorly done scene because of the things happening but that assault scene was basically a 3min recap of their entire relationship to that moment. Him trying to reason and beg her, her giving reasons she can’t or doesn’t want to maybe becoming violent, so he becomes violent knowing that’s what she wants instead, and then she gives in….. this time she didn’t and wasn’t in the mood. He stopped as soon as he realized she was serious. By then it was too late though. She recreated his 100+ yrs with drusila who only loved him when he was violent ect. He was doing what he’d always done. Try changing himself to fit what the girl wants. That moment made him snap finally. Like I said it was poorly done and used as a stepping stone for him. However that’s why she was never as angry as she should have been and why she so easily welcomed him back into the fold. Everyone else was reasonably angry with spike but she accepted that she pushed him and played into it so she just took the shame and guilt as usual. The WHOLE thing was toxic and messed up. But people using that scene and comparing it to other situations isn’t fair to the characters Buffy included or real victims. James had a real life problem with this and so people have to be more nuanced.
18:52 This is written badly. Women who successfully thwart a rape attempt don't have rape trauma. Just speaking as a woman who has always succeeded at thwarting such attempts. They actually give you a confidence high.
I have been raped n I have really bad ptsd that has changed me I hit rock bottom for a very long time I've only recently started to turn my life around but that doesn't changed what happened to me nor does it never go away I'm still struggling im still scared to get close to people. I'm still finding it difficult but it's the past. The pact changes you either for the best or the worst. I nearly ended it all because I couldn't see away out n now I can slowly live with it
@@leahgreen9793 I'm sorry you had to endure that pain. Society wants women to be confident but exploitable. The only reason I was able to defend myself was that I was raised by a firearms safety and self defense trainer for the FBI. He taught me how to throw a pursuer both heavier and taller than I am, and he taught me how to stay calm enough to extend hostilities for an optimal outcome. I wish you had received that education, but unfortunately few women do.

This is extremely reductive. Let’s not ascribe our own experience to an entire gender. Having experienced the same, I was in therapy for years. This wasn’t an attack by a random stranger, either. This was the culmination of a toxic relationship with a lot of baggage attached to it. Buffy had to have been feeling a myriad of ways about it as she struggled to process, especially when others found out. Is Whedon good at writing women? Absolutely not. But was he wrong to suggest a woman experiencing sexual violence from an erstwhile partner would be traumatized from it? It’s ridiculous to suggest that that’s wrong.
@@thelexicon7294 Well, you may be right. I just know that the FBI trainer who raised me taught me the difference between a hostile and a human being. It is wrong for me to presume, though, that that training comes standard with adolescence. I'm sorry my comment offended you. The scene where Buffy jerks away while grabbing the flashlight never rung true to me, but I respect that it does for you. For me the scene that rings true is Buffy telling Xander, "I know I can take him." I hope you're never in such a bad situation again, but forgive me for saying that, if you are, I hope you can deal with it with that same confidence and keep yourself safe.
