Ironically, as a gay male, I disagree. More ironic still, as a gay male, I had the biggest crush on _Faith_ when I was younger, watching the show as it aired on TV.
Throughout the series, you'll find that Buffy is very resourceful. She's aware of her environment and knows how to use it as a weapon. It's a really cool aspect of her character that isn't talked about much
The amusing thing is Buffy's existing athletic prowess is BECAUSE she was a cheerleader back at Hemery High School in LA. Cheerleading is extremely aerobic exercise! With some gymnastics! You'd think Giles would respect it as a fairly good workout...
Although you could argue that she was good at cheerleading at Hemery precisely because she was a Slayer and it just came naturally like everything else.
@@cmlemmus494 possibly - we don't know how long ago she started cheerleading, nor do we know how long she was the new slayer before the Watcher found her. Chicken and egg situation?
@@ernesthakey3396 Perhaps. I keep thinking of {SPOILERS} the fact that both the film and series mention how she almost never gets sick, even as a child. Potentials don't have full Slayer powers, but they do seem a bit more capable than the average human and that can't just be training. Certainly the cheerleading probably helped, but I suspect it's the sort of thing where if she'd been, say, a volleyball player she'd have been MVP. She's just naturally good at athletics.
@@cmlemmus494 agreed - Slayers probably are chosen from among girls that are already naturally healthy and athletic, ie in the top 1% at least, so even without actively being the Slayer, she could have excelled at whatever she did. 👍👍 Some people denigrate it, and I get why, but for me the movie is a guilty pleasure. 🙂
Yeah and I love how the writers didn't forget about her even Oz mentions the trophys eyes moving later in Season 2 and you can see the trophy even in later season when they revisit the burned down high-school 😂
Again, highly recommend The Lost Boys (1987). I just found out today that Keifer Sunderland's character heavily inspired the look for a certain character (if Sergio knows, than he knows)
Love the misdirect with the black cat. We are supposed to think the cat is a familiar, but if it was, then Catherine would have known they were in her space. But she didn't find out until they started reversing her spell.
As a rule of thumb when it comes to Buffy, expect _any_ source of joy, happiness or hope to be extinguished very quickly. In Buffy, happiness is a prologue to extreme misery.
15:00 It is indeed something else, it's "Twilight Zone" by 2 UNLIMITED. Which was remixed by the Immortals as "Techno Syndrome" and used in Mortal Kombat.
Fun fact: Musetta Vander, who played the Praying Mantis Lady, also played Sindel in Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. So, there was more than one MK tie-in.
My thirst was always for Cordelia first. I came to appreciate Buffy a bit later. But nearly every Buffy reactor I’ve seen thirsts for Giles & Angel. I’ll just say there are depths to both of them that you are going to love.
god, do i love season one of Buffy! i mean, i love all the seasons (yes - even season four) but season one just has this after-school special, teen comedy vibe that is so true to its B-movie, horror-trope premise! the writing is so quick and funny - and while it stays that way i don't think Buffy is ever truer to its core than the janky, weirdly edited first season! so much camp, so much comedy - and 1x4 is widely considered one of the worst episodes which blows my mind - like bug spray for a human-sized praying mantis, the chosen one playing the wrong side of the cassette! gag after gag. so glad you guys are enjoying it and i can't wait to get all the way to the end of the Buffyverse with you!
I am so happy ya'll are watching this show. It's a fundamental show for me as I watched as a 13 year old, skipping Girl Scouts to watch episodes. I am excited to see your reactions.
Uhh I 100% agree about a show about a young Giles, but only if they don't chicken out about his relationship with someone. Someone he used to do magic with, if you know what I mean...
Must-see 1980s vampire movies: The Lost Boys (horror-comedy with Kiefer Sutherland, Corey Feldman), Near Dark (straight-up horror with Lance Henricksen, Bill Paxton), and Fright Night (the 1980s original *not* the reboot, campy horror with Chris Sarandon). I don't remember Once Bitten very well, but I remember that I liked it as well, early Jim Carrey vampire flick. I don't think the fake Miss French *needed* to have a virgin, or else she wouldn't have had eggs with the teacher. I think she just preferred them because she was indeed a predator in a couple different ways.
Um...you are assuming the teacher wasn't a virgin? There ARE people who remain virgins into adulthood. He might well be ace, for example, and never been interested in sex. Or, the mantis' rule for virginity might be "a male that has never had sex with a female", and this male might be gay. Who knows?
@@ernesthakey3396 I know. There are a lot of different assumptions that could be made. I considered the time period that this was made, the language and awareness commonly available at the time, and went with the most likely scenario. Back in the '90s, my friends and I would likely have had some rather different lives had the terminology available today had been known back then. (I would have realized I was non-binary and androsexual, for example, rather than realizing it much, MUCH later in life.) I wasn't trying to be exclusive, and I think (hope) you know that.
@@ravenlord7144 excellent, thanks for the detailed reply! When I was watching with friends, back in the day, we all just pretty much assumed he was a virgin, but also we were somewhat weirded out by the idea that she would have taken the time to do that there, and leave evidence at the school, when she'd obviously taken pains to find a different space to breed away from observation. Eventually we just chalked it up to the writers wanting an "oh no!" moment at the end, whether it made sense or not. There's a future episode where I thought we might see the attack of the baby mantids or something... ;) Also, thanks for introducing me to a term I had somehow neglected to learn, I had to look up androsexual! I should have known it, but I somewhat confused it with androgynous - not the same thing at all. Oops...
@@ernesthakey3396 I must admit, I love all the available terminology, because human sexuality and gender is so varied and often fluid. We are still learning so much about ourselves as a species, and it's fascinating! I discovered androsexual when I realized I was non-binary but was lacking a way to describe my sexuality as it related to my gender. I really appreciate you pointing out there could be much more to the scene than my narrow assumption. Probably not given the time period and Joss Whedon's involvement, but it's good to bring in contemporary terminology and bring the series into the 2020s!
The title of ep 3, Witch is a pun. It is Witch, as in a woman who casts spells. But also it is which, as in "which one." That is why the title is just "Witch," and not "The Witch." Many of the show titles will be like this, having multiple meanings within the context of the episode.
Female mantids don't always eat their mates. "The reason for sexual cannibalism in praying mantis has been debated; experiments show that females on low quality diets have a higher chance to engage in sexual cannibalism compared to females on high quality diets. Some consider that submissive males gain a selective advantage by producing offspring. This theory is supported by a quantifiable increase in the duration of copulation among males which are cannibalized, in some cases doubling both the duration and the chance of fertilization. This is contrasted by a study where males were seen to approach hungry females with more caution, and were shown to remain mounted on hungry females for a longer time, indicating that males that actively avoid cannibalism may mate with multiple females. The same study also found that hungry females generally attracted fewer males than those that were well fed. The act of dismounting after copulation is dangerous for males, for at this time, females most frequently cannibalize their mates. An increase in mounting duration appears to indicate that males wait for an opportune time to dismount a hungry female, who would be likely to cannibalize her mate."
The thing I remember most about being in high school is going home after school and watching TRL and the very first seasons of The Real World. Old, I know. Lol
The fact that willow is Jewish and says hile is WILD! I guess thats the 90s. The way Willow and xander totally forgot Jesse and just replaced him with Buffy... must be the hellmouth.
One thing I always wondered about this episode was why was Buffy so nervous about the cheerleading auditions, I mean did she temporarily forget what she could do.
Teachers pet never re-aired after first season for several years in the US. I was a huge fan but didn’t record it initially. I found someone on eBay in Canada and bought a vhs copy so I could finally see it again.
Great reaction again to S1 E3, love your enthusiasm for the show. The bit I remember from this episode is where Buffy and Joyce are talking in the kitchen and Buffy refers to Joyce having 'Farah Hair' was a reference to Farah Fawcett Majors who was in the original Charlie's Angels, and was one of the most famous women of the 70's, every woman that time wanted the 'Farah Flick'. Witch was one of the better episodes of Series 1. Although S1 was a bit rough due to low budget and show finding its feet, it lays the groundwork for the upcoming episodes. Once this show reaches mid S2 it really picks up in every way, and produces some of the best TV drama ever written. In this episode the metaphor here is the 'pushy parent' who forces their child to things and is annoyed with them when they don't excel. The ultimate pushy parent, Amy's mum criticising her child and forcing her to do things she may not be able to do, then taking over her body. A decent little episode for early on in the show. Great positive reaction again.
Charisma Carpenter was a professional Cheeleader for the San Diego Chargers before this. Season 1 has a lot of non-vampire monsters because SMG had a graveyard phobia and as a mid-season replacement show they didn't have the budget to build a graveyard set. Later, with help, she got over her phobia and in later seasons they sometimes used real graveyards again. 22:29 Willow isn't doing it because she's good friend, but because she is in love with Xander and has been since they were little. 24:07 Praying Mantises are cannibals and the males are actually more effective mates after they have had their heads bitten off by the females. They don't usually follow up on ending scenes indicating the monsters are still around.
I'm not sure why I never thought about it before. But through a million rewatches, it never occurred to me that Amy's mom had swapped with Amy at the point that she was bitching about Amy's father not making money and running off with trailer trash lol. Like, yep that's a weird tea for Amy to spill all over everyone. But a total normal thing for a jaded ex-wife to spill lol Also, the teacher WAS a doctor... Dr. Gregory was his name lol. Buffy says it when she picks up the glasses.
Really enjoy your reactions. Keep having fun with this great series. The Buffy fans can be very protective and sometimes will make no sense. That’s why fans are fanatics I guess. Just sit back for a great journey. Yes there was no budget and it’s campy but each episode uses monsters and demons for metaphors for real high school issues of the times. First and foremost this is a story of a girl trying to become a strong, independent thinking woman of strong moral convictions that does not give in to group think or avoidance of life. The unjustly maligned first season will establish the main characters so their story arcs will make sense and develop the many entertaining and interesting issues addressed. But that is for the classroom. Very glad you are having a blast and reacting how we all felt when we saw this on tv. There was nothing that prepared us for this show and you are seeing why Buffy was the badass and Angel becomes the heartthrob. And you are just at episode 4… with a 140 more.Have fun
Hey guys ❤ I was just watching your series for midnight mass and was thinking. You guys should TOTALLY watch The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor! They both have the same actress as Midnight Mass and they're both honestly my favorite spooky TV shows of all time. I think you both would absolutely LOVE them! Just be sure to watch Hill House before Bly Manor! ❤
There is a movie that came first if you haven’t seen it yet. It has the backstory about the gym, and her school before she showed up. Buffy was played by Kristy Swanson.
Giles is definitely sassy. And has some hidden secrets. I am soooo happy you guys are doing this series, and will hopefully, when the time comes, do Angel as well.
One of my favorite S1 episodes... And my second least favorite :P You guys have a really fun reaction style that's very different from other Buffy reactors! I'm excited to see your reactions when things get excellent! Giles love is relatable! "We saw armpit!" ... I'm dying 😂
Today is the day my gays and ghouls that I celebrate my birth (I turn 20 years old) and I just got off of Dead Meat covering The Lost Boys (highly recommend it for a future reaction) needless to say this is turning into the best birthday ever
The only teachers the guys thought were hot at my school were the substitute teachers. They were always younger and trying hard wardrobe wise, unlike the regular teachers who were like, your mom or grandma lol
16:20 I hope that's not what Giles says right before putting it deep into the hole. 30:56 There was a proposed young Giles spin-off, titled Ripper, but it never happened.
I always found the eggs at the end kind of sad more than scary. I mean, those things mean that her teacher was a virgin, as the mantis only mated with virgins.
Season 3, for me, is really when this show becomes more interesting, but season 4 is when it really takes off for me and gets groundbreaking. But 1 and 2 are great too, I feel like the first 3 are the foundation until season 4 after they are done with high-school.
Loving the double episodes. Love the campiness! Willow continues to be my favorite 🖤 I need more Angel! I like that it’s branching out with the creatures and I’m definitely enjoying the ride. Great reaction y’all 🙃🙌🏼
S1 as is always mentioned is weak due to its low budget, but it gets us to really know and love the characters, and 'the monster of the week' type format is evident throughout most of it. However, again it does provide an analysis of social comment, this time in Teacher's Pet we see how the experienced and mature adults can take advantage of the innocent and weak younger people. This time in the form of a mature female teacher who is being drooled over by all the teenage boys, and is using them for evil purposes. Great that you guys have decided to continue with the show. Wait ill you get further into the show, it's amazing!
Thankfully RU-vid recommended your channel to me when you started Buffy! I'm just loving your content. You two are downright adorable, and entertaining as... You two referring to cheerleader tryouts as auditions.... So wonderfully gay. Out-gayed me that's for sure. I love it. ♥️🏳️🌈😁 Thank you. I'll be following this journey until the end.
4:05 stop…. Stop It! ….. JUST STOP! lol I didn’t even realize I felt so strongly about the opening song (shout out to Nerf Herder ) but the minute you finished saying “has anyone ever put words to this…?” I have stopped everything I was doing and was looking straight at the tv with my mouth hanging open….. I might as well been clutching my damn pearls….. I’m 44 (1980 the last year of gen x) this show is imo the best all around show of all time…. Don’t get me wrong it has its issues… especially this first season…. But I am so very protective of this show…. The wit and humor arent typical…. Now don’t get me wrong I love me some Charmed too (Piper /Holly Marie Combs is my queen!) my cat is named Piper and I have the symbol that is on the cover of their “book of shadows” tattooed on the inside of my right wrist ….. I can’t tell you how elated I was when y’all Announced y’all were doing these!!!!
The song u two think is from "Mortal kombat" is and isnt lol. It's from 2Unlimited a Dutch Duo from the 90's and parts of the song are used in Mortal kombat yes lol. I put the link down below if you wanna enjoy the whole song lol. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ecrf9uoHSTc.htmlsi=XAJYwY8ImVjWjJox
Xander is my least favorite person in the show and always has been since I was a teenager first watching it. "Nice guy energy" wasn't something we said back then, but Jesus he has that in spades. There was a friend in my friend group who really thought he deserved to date my bestie just because he was nice to her and she was nice to him. He bitched about it sometimes when she wasn't around and especially when she was dating other people, but I never heard her say anything about him other than just him being a friend. Xander always reminded me of him. I tried to empathize with him, I was a sounding board for a lot of his angst, I mean you like who you like, but goddamn. And again. Xander. Honestly. Same way. And his character does not get better about this B's as he gets older.
