To be fair to Cordelia, bringing a gift when visiting someone in the hospital isn't quite as ubiquitous of a tradition as it's portrayed in that scene. There's absolutely nothing wrong with just visiting someone to lend your support and give them some companionship for a bit.

Going with the pretty obvious latin root - and the associated "age" for Angel -, it would be more like the others pronounced it, just with the "g" being a plosive (like in "garlic") instead of the soft "g/j". But I guess going with an anglicized pronunciation was considered "more accessible for the audience"....

I firmly believe that planning the order of episodes in a season, especially a long season like these, is an unappreciated art - varying the intensity of episodes, and using lighter episodes, or monster-of-the-week ones, as relief after tense episodes and major season plot episodes. I'd also say that it shows how big the last few episodes have been that a horror episode is considered to be light relief.

Agreed. It's also why I miss the old-school longer seasons that had decent-sized writing rooms where they could hash all this stuff out ahead of time. Also the traditional airing would allow them to adjust to fan reaction to change character arcs or the show story arcs.

This is one of the rare episodes they lean into the 'horror' aspect more than usual. The demon is pretty terrifying and being invisible and going after kids is just creepy. I do wish they had done this episode earlier in the season before the Angelus story got going.

IMO it's one of the best episodes because they share a lot about buffy and her past: you learn she is afraid of hospitals and that stems from losing her cousin when she was younger. you can also tell she saw herself as a hero/ leader figure even at a young age. also seeing buffy in a weak state is not something we see overly often so that is interesting in itself. I also love episodes that focus around urban legends or fables or fairy tales and Dur Kindestod is a German fable.

It actually fits best during this part of the Angelus storyline. Buffy, with her Slayer strength never gets sick. But she's wearing herself out, weakening her immunity severely by being out on patrol every night, pushing herself harder, likely not getting any sleep BECAUSE she blames herself for Angelus, and at this point for Miss Calendars death because of it. Earlier in the season or any other point would not have a so completely understandable reason that Buffy would be sick and in the hospital.

Agree, it'd have been better placed earlier in the season. Season 2 is one of my favorites, but if I'm going to be critical, the episode pacing is off towards the end. Redirecting focus to monsters of the week just feels jarring and disappointing after Jenny's death. The stakes are set and Angelus is all I care about at this point.

The demon was just hideous! I do get what you mean though about episode placement. We're getting close to the end of the season here, and sometimes I just really want the main storyline to continue as I'm impatient 🤣 There's always something to be loved and enjoyed though, even with episodes like this one. Yes, this is a great episode to follow such a heart wrenching episode like when Jenny is killed. There’s enough humour to keep things from getting too dark, while at the same time the “monster of the week” is incredibly creepy. And as a big fan of A Nightmare On Elm Street, I really appreciate how similar the monster is to Freddy Krueger (at least in his physical appearance and the fact that he prefers to kill children). It’s almost like a Buffy vs Freddy fan fiction come to life. Well . . . Two more monsters of the week and then the two part season finale. Juliet, you’re going to love the next two episodes. They’re a lot of fun. And as for the two part finale? Bring tissues. I won’t tell you why, but you will need them.

I'm not usually disappointed when a demon in an episode it's easy to beat, when you know that demon survives by being sneaky, it makes sense that that demon wouldn't be very tough in a fight.

Don't worry Jules, I confuse this episode with the baseball kid one, so it's not just you. This is such an interesting episode because it is a monster-of-the-week episode that follows a very heavy story arc episode, but it's still very intense. I know some people would rather Jenny's death be followed by another story arc episode, but I think it's important to have some breathing room between those heavy moments. Plus, this episode is a really significant character episode for Buffy. Her sickness is clearly a sign of the toll Angelus has been taking on her, and the reveal about her cousin gives a nice glimpse into a traumatic part of her childhood. Given how badly she feels she's failed in the fight against Angelus, it's nice that she was able to score a victory, for those kids, her cousin and for herself. Fantastic reaction as always!

I know some people have criticized this episode (definitely a monster-of-the-week) as being a rip-off of A Nightmare On Elm Street, in terms of a demon who kills kids in their sleep. However, it is compelling enough, hospitals are creepy, and many people are afraid of them. The confrontation between Xander and Angel is very compelling and even terrifying. I love that Xander stood up to him. I think David Boreanaz enjoyed playing a bad guy. It's interesting that in the first two episodes of the series, Angel was kind of a smart-ass, cracking jokes, but it kind of disappeared after that - until he became Angelus again (lost his soul), so it is interesting seeing him with humor again (albeit very dark humor). Children in jeopardy are always scary.

Joss has admitted that Krueger was one of the inspirations. But I think while it is part of an inspiration for the character, there is also enough oringinality. I mean are we going to complain that Oz is a rip off of the Wolfman or other werewolves? That the Master was a rip off of Nosferatu, or that the vampires in general are a rip off of vampires. If they made it that rather than a demon, it was a child killer who was killed by parents in his sleep, then I'd accept rip off instead of being an inspiration from the source.

I thought this was a pretty decent stand alone episode, with the children in fear of the monster. Buffy again comes through and we see her as the ultimate protector she is. This is actually quite scary in that Der Kindestod is a terrible monster, which we do see throughout the show that some of the monsters are incredibly evil and terrifying. The fears of children are well shown in this episode and the innocence and fear they have. Quite a funny and cute scene at the end where we see Buffy, Willow, and Xander acting like children themselves letting Joyce run around providing them with snacks and drinks, a great scene where we are reminded they are at this point still very much kids themselves.

At the very least Buffy is feeling guilty because she had an opportunity to kill Angel at the end of 2x14 but couldn't do it. "You can't do it. You can't kill me." "Give me time." Because of this Buffy blames herself for Jenny's death. That's why she is beating herself up extra hard about not being able to protect everyone.

Considering Buffy and the Scooby Gang constantly refer to Angelus as "Angel," I think you can be forgiven for mixing them up. Though it does help to think of evil Angel as Angelus to compartmentalize your feelings about him. He is a *very* different person from Angel, even if he looks the same and has some common interests with Angel. This isn't a great episode, but its a nice breather after Passions.

You edited out my favourite part (not a criticism at all since, obviously, you can't keep everything in). But the part where Cordelia is describing to Buffy what the bad guy does, then walks away saying "why do I let you guys talk me into this stuff?" then Giles picks up the phone to ask Buffy if she's still there and she answers "hanging on to every 'ew'" I laugh every single time. lol They did need a bit of a breather after last episode. I agree. Great reaction, as always. :)

Yes, this monster definitely references Freddy Krueger and the Nightmare on Elm Street frranchise. Both with its look, its thematics, and even the doctor's murder that references both Tina murder, and the scene later when Nancy sees her in a body bag, dragged by an invisible force. And that's the reason it's my favorite episode of this season. Cause I'm a great fan of the Nightmare on Elm Street movies. Actually, this episode is the reason I bought the DVD it is on not once nor twice, but three times. I originally bought it with a nice box edition for the 2nd season, shaped as an old leather book/diary. But alas, a malfunction of my DVD player stuck it inside. I had to tear down the player, but it was too late, the disc was horribly scratched. So I had to wait that a newsdealer edition (which published each DVD individually) came out. But due to multiple house moves, I lost my season 1 and season 2 DVD boxes.... So 5 years ago, I bought a box of the whole show (including a DVD version of the Season 8 comic books) which technically makes me having bought that DVD three times.

Thank god the put in a breather episode after the last one (especially in your case, I think this is the same day for you, but I might be wrong). At first I was impressed by Xander (or better Nicholas) carrying Buffy, but then I remembered how tiny Sarah Michelle Gellar is. As for the mispronunciation of Angelus, I have watched a lot of reactions by different people (like probably a lot of people watching your reactions), but you are either among the people most easy to be forgiven or even at the top of the list. I keep flopping back and forth with the right Angelus pronunciation but I'll get there one day! I have a long history of pronouncing things wrong, so I'm just continuing things here it seems 🤭 one of my best things to mispronounce was "profiteroles". I called them profit-a-rolls 🤣

When I was in grade 5 or 6 I had to do speech therapy, because I had a lisp (Which is especially bad in the German language, we might not sound like Hollywood portrays us, but we have many sh/sch sounds and some weird ones with z/tz. Aside from that, the English th sound is probematic for nearly every German, but especially with a lisp.).

i suspect what happened was this: if you have the flu (especially a bad one) you can get burned out easily and Buffy's fight with Angel caused her to become very exhausted and she blacked out. vampires are only forbidden from private homes...the owner has to invite them. A public place welcomes all...unfortunately.

Missed opportunity: I was positive Buffy was going to kill him by grabbing his eye-mouth stalks and ripping them out. The 'crack' was a bit of a let down. But an episode I really like, and one of my favorite Buffy monsters.

You would think that being the slayer would give them immunity to sickness, along with all the other super powers. xD Yeah, this is a scary episode, the demon is very gruesome and the kids scream is chilling. Also, fun fact: the 'alpert' mausoleum that debuted a few episodes ago, and was in the beginning of this episode, will be in the background of plenty of cemetery scenes from now on. It's named after one of the producers of the show!

The alpacas are very torn about this episode. On the one hand it showcases Xander's bravery and looks, they swooned. On the other, they were mildly offended by Willow's use of frogs. "Anyone" who makes it their job to save/help people always feel they failed when people get hurt or die. Buffy is no exception. I pronounce the "evil" version as Anne-Jealous because it seems like a good way to split the "good and evil" versions up in my head. The ideas they came up with are both from folklore and from the dark imaginings of hollywood writers... meaning you never know what comes next.

Xander is a true hero in the group, he steps in even though he's just a regular guy, and he never backs down regardless of the danger, it's a trend we'll see through out the show. the monster was super creepy this time, honestly I can only think of one future monster that's worse, so much still to come, I'm looking forward to your next reaction!

You are quite correct on the Freddy Krueger feel here, they where clearly making some references to the first A Nightmare on Elm Street film. Not only the character design with the hat, he also targets children, grownups cannot see him (weak reference but the grownups does not dream of Freddy), then there is the basement (Freddy:s boilerroom), the monster here moving when he enters the basement just like how Freddy extends his arms and the doctor is carried away just like Tinas body is dragged away at school in Nancys day dream.

Side note to cross-reference another great series, the cop in this played the recurring role of a stranded alien in Stargate SG-1 :)

Alright, Jules💜 Back with the family of doom! Well, a little lighthearted episode, this time around. Frightening Grimm monster of the week, but surrounded with a bunch of comedic pieces, and lines, from all the supporting cast. The 3 main characters, doing all manner of dangerous, and sneaky tasks, and then returning , at the last, to what they are - just teenagers, bossing their mom around.🤣 It's always good when you are laughing, Jules. Glad to see it return.😊 I enjoyed the episode. It was the proper thing, after the nastiness of last week's offering.😅 I enjoyed your taping buddy, near the beginning. Strolling off, during your intro, "she's going on... I got time to get a snack."🤣

Technically I think it is An-GEL-us, emphasis on the hair gel ; ) But I think Spike says AN-gel-ous. Yeah, this is definitely one of my least favorite episodes of the whole show, BUT it's always fun to watch along with you Jules. Cordi's lines are great though!

This was a pretty poignant episode. People always want to make sense of death and suffering. It's like humans are hard wired to do so. It's also why the vampires and the demons will always lose and have always lost.

Sorry I'm late, but I had to help the neighbors battle the giant attacking the area. Since that went easier than expected, we decided to get rid of the trolls from underneath some local bridges. I'm mean sure, I still have to deal with the gremlins in my washing machine, but I have a plan: Let them get comfy and complacent and then start up a load of whites.

Angelus is pronounced An-jel-us. Not like the city Los Angeles. Angelus is Latin for Angel. Joss Whedon kind of let the wrong pronunciations go for a while but later (insert spoiler here) he required all the actors to pronounce it correctly.

When you realise when the the fact that the doctor thinks sometimes kids die, it’s probably just a way of coping the kids do die. It’s a sad truth, but you can do everything you can’t save them all

This is my least favourite episode of season two and maybe my least favourite ever. Other episodes I had trouble with like the preying mantis lady and nightmares still had multiple bits I liked. This one. I sort of like the Cordelia/Xander dynamic in this one. I enjoyed the Angel Xander confrontation at the hospital. That one feels like joss wrote it to tack on to the episode. It does underline the Xander hate of angel. The episode and the flu felt a little like a silver age superman story with extra made up back story. and flu as kryptonite to make the hero vulnerable. The resolution with the monster was disappointing. Usually they set something up and then wrap it in to the resolution. This writer didnt do that.

For my money, the creepiest monster-of-the-week (technically "monsters"; you'll see) is in the Season 4 episode "Hush". Fortunately the premise of that episode lends itself to some pretty good humor among the Scooby Gang to again balance out the horror aspects. But you obviously have a ways to go to get there yet.
