For everyone comparing the Angel and Anya situations and saying that Buffy is a hypocrite, did any of you consider the fact that the Angel situation is probably what influenced Buffy to take action sooner. When Angel turned Buffy was only 17 and still hadn't grasped the full gravity of her role as Slayer. Because Buffy didn't act sooner when Angel turned evil Ms. Calendar died. Why would Buffy make the same mistake now that she's 5 years older and significantly more aware of the damage that can be caused if she doesn't take action?

Buffy stated it pretty plainly for me. Anya chose to become a demon twice. We've all seen (and heard from her personally) the damage she can do. Why would Buffy allow that in her town? She was fully justified in this decision.
Anya previously helped Buffy fight Dark Willow in Season 6 even though she was a vengeance demon and had no reason to. So in a way Buffy didn't want to slay her but decided to do it when left with no other option. Had Anya granted wishes outside Sunnydale I think Buffy would be less compelled to kill her.
Well you can't really use the choose argument to save Angel saying that he didn't have a choice because we have all seen Spike change. He could have blown up Buffy with that shotgun back in season 5, even with the chip.

Spike didn’t really change before the soul, he just modified his behavior and adapted to his situation to survive and to get what he wanted (money, occasional violence and trying to have sex with Buffy). He didn’t make a single noble move prior to his soul that didn’t somehow benefit himself, even when he risked his life. Spike was incapable of true change because he didn’t have a soul, so he was unable to really grasp right from wrong. Look at Harmony. She became as friendly with Team Angel as possible, yet she still betrayed them in the end because she’s a demon, and that’s what they do. Soulless Spike might have played the role of the good guy, but it was only a role. Nothing more.
Why didn't they take advantage of that slipup to add to the drama in the episode? Buffy would have been pissed and decided Xander was not worth listening to anymore. After everything was cleared up, he could apologize, but Buffy brushes him off and THAT'S how tension could have been built up between the Scoobies leading up to empty places
Anya literally has a higher kill count than almost any other demon / Big Bad in the series; remember she was active for a thousand years and partially caused the Russian Revolution. Buffy has every reason not to give her the benefit of the doubt. Also still can't believe it took them 5 years/seasons to confront Xander for his lying to Buffy in the Season 2 finale.
I think we can really see the Joss Whedon manipulation of things very clearly when we get the lip service of Willow finding out Xander lied and said “Kick his ass!” but Xander facing ZERO consequences for that transgression
The writers said for years that it wasn’t a betrayal, Xander was steeling the troops before battle with his lie, but after fans rightly said for the same years that Xander did it for his own ends and Buffy could have stalled had she known about the spell, they threw the fans this bone in the final season. Enough? No, but at least Xander finally got called out.

Buffy was fully justified. Anya chose to be a demon twice. And she’s pretty powerful by her own admission, and from what we saw she was able to do in s3 by transforming Sunnydale with Cordelia’s wish. Angel didnt choose becoming a vampire and he didn’t want to lose his soul and start killing again, so in a sense it was different to this situation, but Buffy did what she had to do anyway and killed him. And she knows if she had acted faster in killing him, Ms Calander might have lived. And now that’s she’s seen the horror Anya can inflict, she’s not prepared to wait and allow more people to die Xander is a hypocrite. He cheered her on when she killed Angel all because he was jealous that Buffy didn’t love him, but now when it’s someone he cares about he acts like they should get a pass and Buffy is being unreasonable This also could used as a valid reason as to why the Council usually insists the Slayer works alone, with only her Watcher for guidance....less people to cause problems and distract from what needs to be done

I try to look at things form a adult point of VIEW, and disliking what someone does does not mean you dislike the person, and since buffy like all show have many different people in them, you can very easly dislike buffy but watch becouse you like everyone else. Now as i said many times, i would agree with you idea that anglus made her change BUT the huge problem with that is SHE was willing to kill ANYA in min after she found out, BUT was not willing to kill spike or willow. So that proves buffy has a different set of rules for people she loves.
@@az21bob666 Sorry, but that is not a valid point. She did let Angelus live, but you cannot compare the Buffy of season 2 to the Buffy of season 6 and 7. The Buffy of season 2 was only 17 years old. She saw the world through the eyes of a teenager in love rather then a responsible adult. And it makes sense, taking to mind that she WAS a child. The Buffy of time presense is a Buffy who faught many difficult battles and was much more mature. She ended up killing Angelus much later tha should have, and that is due to the fact that up until he killed Jenny, she didn't believe, or refused to believe, that her lover was gone. Only after Jenny she finally "realized" she had to end this, and ending it she did. It is because of Angel that she responded to the Anya situation the way she did. If anything, this thing with Anya is way worse than Angel, because Angel didn't CHOOSE to become what he became, while Anya did. In this arguement, Buffy took the high road, and it was Xander who took the part of 17 year old Buffy.

Everything about this scene was fantastic. The thing I loved so much about Buffy was that the ground work was so well laid for every character that on some base level, I could recognize and appreciate their point of view. I understand where Xander is coming from, but Buffy makes a fair point as well. I know season seven isn't beloved by fans, but it did an excellent job of focusing on the burden and responsibility of the Slayer. Also, a lot of people are harping on Buffy in this comment section, but you have to remember that she stabbed Anya with a sword in the chest knowing it wouldn't kill her. I always thought that was a clever, subtle way for the writers to show that Buffy knew what she was doing and firing a warning shot to let Anya know she wouldn't hesitate to really kill her if it came to that.
Buffy is right here. Anya chose to become a Demon. She's killing people who don't deserve to die and she enjoys it. She's a powerful killer who has to be stopped.
I was so grateful that she finally confronted them about the message Willow never said; because the message was she was working on souling him. Xander is more of a selfish hypocrite then Buffy will ever be.

But he didn’t cause the mess… that’s the whole point of the scene. Anya was responsible for how she chose to respond to her situation and she chose to become a demon knowing full well she was in direct proximity to the slayer… yes from Xanders pov he feels a sense of guilt but ultimately it was Anya’s choice.

I love this scene - so much for 'puppy love' 'she forgot about Angel' comments. I like to think after this scene her and Willow talk & she finally finds out Xander lied.
I always hated Xander. A hypocrite and a brat. He deserted Anya at the altar and this is what he gets. He always carried a torch for Buffy and he just couldn’t stand it that Buffy would rather f*** a corpse, 2 of them in fact, than touch a loser like him. He’s no better than an incel. And to top it all off he totally got away with that “kick his ass” comment back in season 2, the little 💩. Even here it doesn’t quite sink in that what he said was a betrayal. Season 6 finale was his ONLY redeeming moment, besides the Zeppo episode. More to the point, even her closest family never understood the burden Buffy had just being what she is. They were all cowards compared to her. Never tell the Slayer what to do, you don’t have the right.
After what angel did to them he had every right to say that, and they are not cowards they stood with buffy they just dont have her power, the resurection was needed as we saw it latter, the world needed buffy.
Did you see the damn show? Xander and Anya had doubts about geting married during all the season; Xander was manipulated by Anya's victim who used his fears. Only reason Xander ran away was because he didnt want to trap Anya in a shitty marriage like the ones his parents have. If he didn't lie in the end of the second season, Buffy would probably died while holding back and waiting for Angel to return; his lie saved her life and the whole world. Also, it is true that Xander had the hots for Buffy; but he also has common sense. Remember when the Master's minions were trying to revive him and they kidnapped Willow and the others due to Buffy's negligence; Xander told to Buffy "If they hurt Willow I will kill you". Xander can be a fool, but he knows his priorities.
Buffy had to do it, i like how she got something from Faith's mindset about "they are the law". Yes, they are. But for the record, Willow also chose to suck in all of that dark magic and did her brutal revenge, yet Buffy somehow does not want her in jail, while she wanted everyone else and Willow murdered very brutally. Here we can see how much Buffy changed. Few seasons back she would have tried to give Anya a chance, in season 7 she did not try anymore, but she could not wait for her to realize this is wrong and let her murder people in process, that's impossible. I do understand Xander, but at least there he knew what it felt to kill Angel and how he pushed on Buffy to kill him as fast as she could and even lied about that message.

True. He limited her options. If she knew Willow was trying it again, she could've kept him away from Acathla until it either worked or didn't. Xander is just so bitter and nasty when it comes to Angel, always has been.
Xander is the reason why Buffy survived that fight and saved the world. Buffy was fighting seriously and Angelus was kicking her ass; she only controlled the fight when she set her mind in killing him.

Sunnydale is her courtroom. She has EVERY right to put killing Anya on the table. She was definitely willing to put Willow down in the previous season
So true. Buffy had made the hard decisions no matter how she may have felt all through the show. She killed Angel, was prepared to kill Faith and Willow if she had too, and didn’t want to kill Anya because she knew what it would do to Xander, but she knew what her calling was...it makes sense why the Slayer was always supposed to work alone

Buffy took Xander’s hypocrisy for way too long. She really did it for us when she gave this speech. Its the most iconic for me because enough was more than enough and we all know nobody ever truly loved her unconditionally the way Angel DOES (hence why she said that) not even her two “friends” who have always had conditions with loving her. That’s why they were shook because they know she was 100% right. That’s why season 3 is my favorite because mirroring Xander and willow, Angel and Faith awaken the slayer side of Buffy… they helped her harness that power and grow into this leader that Xander and Willow just can’t grasp and honestly never tried. They don’t live in the dark with her. When it comes to the supernatural, She really is the law.

They gave Angel shit for him being a vampire despite the fact he was a soulless monster and separate from the man he was, granted he did turn and attack them but it was by accident and resolved. Anya in the meantime did worse things as a vengeance demon whether on or off the job and it seems she still had a soul while doing it but until this episode they gave her a free pass. I always wondered if Anya was autistic and the Scoobies let her history slide on the basis nothing they'd say could hurt her.

To be fair though, the main reason why Angel got these kind of feelings from Buffy is because of Angels curse. Though Angel was a vampire like Spike, Angel was never viewed as an enemy by Buffy because no soul Angel was Angelus, a different person. However Spike didn’t have a curse, no soul Spike was still considered the same. See the difference? That curse just gave Angel an advantage. If Angel wasn’t cursed, he would 100% be Angelus and would have to work to earn his soul like Spike did. But if Spike has that same curse as Angel, Buffy would have no choice but to view him as “broken “ too. I hate that they never made the Buffy character recognize that. I like Bangle, but I don’t agree it was “meant to be”. I mean maybe it was, but again it’s only superior because of Angel being cursed. Non soul Angel did nothing but bad. However, non soul Spike had a mix of both good and bad, well not until he met Buffy that is.
@@lessismore8533 why do people always latch trying to disprove Buffy and Angel, you're literally saying Angel is only superior because of script writing that made it that way lol well yea duh obviously, everything in the series is what it is because of script writing so what you're actually saying is irrelavant. Even most of the cast think Buffy and Angel are the one in the show, their love was always there, they broke up for the greater good, never because the love wasn't there. Buffy herself literally says she loved Angel more than she will every love anyone, if Angel didn't leave for his own TV show or if he didn't have to turn back the time, they would have been together. I honestly for the life of me have never understood how Buffy and Spike is so popular, their relationship was acceptable at best and vile for most of it, I fully believe if Spike wasn't such a popular character no one would like him with Buffy based on their relationship alone. I find it especially funny today because the people who go around calling everything "problematic" are the same people who love Buffy and Spike which If there was ever a relationship to call problematic it was them. Not to menttion season 6 and 7 are the worst seasons of Buffy which is where all the Spike and Buffy episodes are.
Just because Spike wasn't Buffy's first love at the age of 16 doesn't mean shippers of Spike is any less relevant. Most teenagers don't know what they want or need in a relationship they're young and naive, they don't know what true love is like for example when everyone ganged up on her in season 7 including Dawn, Willow, and Xander, Spike was the only one to defend her, he stood by her side through some of her hardest moments like loosing her mother in the episode, The Body, Spike fell in love with Buffy before getting his soul in which he fought to get for her, Angel loved nothing and no one without his, cursed with something is different than struggling and fighting to earn it. The truth is Spike's feeling's were and will always be more genuine and legit than Angel's even if at first it was messed up, overall it was there and nothing will change that whether you ship Bangel or Spuffy. Watching the show years ago I shipped Buffy and Angel, but as an adult I now ship Buffy and Spike. Also, sidenote Spike is way cuter and funnier than Angel soul or no soul!
I hated Xander. Not to mention that he got people killed when he summoned Sweet in Once More with Feeling just so he and Anya could "Get a happy ending." He never paid for that. 😤
I always felt that ending made absolutely no sense. It felt like they just sort of tacked it on as an explanation but I don’t think xander would ever have done that. He could be insecure and selfish but that was just weird

Xander is an hypocrite, he was always saying that Angel had to die, and he knew that Buffy was in love with him. Oh, but they can't kill Anya because he loves her? Excuse me Xander but Anya was crazy because you broke with her in the wedding. Buffy has done a lot of difficult things and he can't accept it
Yeah but Buffy is also a hypocrite in this scene for the opposite reason. It’s okay for Spike to kill innocents because she cares about him she rationalizes letting him live over and over. Let it be known I’m not defending Xander in any way, he still sucks. I’m always here for Xander slander, it’s just that Buffy was real quick to choose killing Anya for someone who’s so experienced rationalizing the evil actions of people she cares for

Anya is at the point where she is out of control and it's Buffy's job to be sheriff and deal with it. Faith was right the Slayer is the law in this world. Xander chose to be with a demon and it should be not surprising that Anya went back to her old ways after he ditched her at the altar.
This show was so awesome and it was great to have faith come back to help them defeat the source once in for all what a 180 compared to her roles in season 3 and 4
Wow lots of opinions about this show. I see both sides, people calling Xander a hypocrite are missing the point, she called him out on it and now he understands what she was going through in season 2. Doesn’t mean he’s gonna stop trying to find a way around it. People saying buffy was harsh, yeah but people are dead, plus she’s going through a lot which makes sense as to why she’s like this. Both sides of this argument are valid and that’s why this is such a good show.

She’s not right and the show makes that clear, she’s still a glee human being do you can see why she’s acting like this.

Secondly, Buffy killed Angel with her hands.. and Now she had to Kill Anya with her hands.. Not Xander. The double standard.
He had some points, but yeah it came down that Anya had the choice. But I also believe that he feels guilty and responsible for the situation as well. Had he not left Anya, this wouldn't have happened.
Exactly. Angel never chose to be a monster. He was drunk and out of his mind when Darla sired him. Since he got his soul back, all he’s wanted is to become human again and find forgiveness for all the horrible things he did. Anya had a choice. And she picked being a demon. Twice. She made it clear by this point what she wanted. Buffy learned after Angel that no matter how much she cares for someone, if they pose a danger to others, she has to stop them. Xander kept blaming her for not stopping Angel when she had the chance in sophomore year, yet now that she’s learned her lesson and the one she’s trying to stop is Xander’s ex-honey, NOW he has a problem with that. When being "selfish" gives you the compassion to understand that _everyone_ deserves more chances, then I'll be selfish as hell. Xander is a hypocrite, but it shouldn't _even_ take having to love someone to avoid killing them. And no, Buffy is _not_ the only one who has had to make that decision. Every "friend" she had to consider killing (except Angel) was significant to others close to her. In any case, cutting people off is a _choice_ that you have even _less_ of a right to make when your occupation requires signing death warrants. It is dangerous and psychotic to consider yourself the sole/final dictator of who or what lives and dies. Slayer or not, no human being knows everything or can always be right. It is selfishly risky to be closed-minded in such situations. And if she's wise enough to make such decisions, then she should know _that._

Buffy loved Angel and Angel's soul was restored right before Buffy killed him so technically Buffy killed Angel not Angelus meanwhile Anya is evil and will stay that way unless someone acts now its not like there's a spell made to transform a demon into a person. I think its about time Xander got a taste of his own medicine telling Buffy that willow said to kick Angel's ass knowing Buffy still loved Angel at that time. I'm not big on Buffy and Angel's romance but Xander wasn't a good friend to Buffy since the beginning all because of jealousy.
this was long overdue. xander hated angel from day 1 because he was in love with buffy and only saw things his way. buffy dying and coming back to life the first time did something to her and yes she acted out but xander totally treated her like a villain instead of trying to understand why shes acting out. then when she decides it's time to kill angel he lies to her. buffy could've kept angel on the ropes until willow completed the spell angel always said that buffy was stronger than him. then when she leaves sunnydale heartbroken when she returns he yells at her? he was always trash. then he breaks anya's heart after knowing she was a vengeance demon once before then seeing her kill college kids he thought it was okay? he only ever saw things his way. yall give him a lot for "saving the day" in season 6. it's about time he did something.
Xander was right and wrong about Spike. Spike didn’t have a choice because of the chip in his head, but getting his soul back was entirely his choice, and he did that in order to be forgiven and loved, not just by Buffy, but by her friends too. Anya, TWICE, chose to be a demon because she was hurt. She chose to hurt people rather than try to deal with her feelings. She would rather feel nothing than feel anything, which is the complete opposite of Spike, who felt so deeply without a soul that he almost died getting his, and then tried to cut out his heart in an effort to kill himself so he can’t feel the pain and guilt. When he eventually regained his sanity, Buffy chose to have his chip removed rather than keep it in just in case he went evil, because she believed he could be a better man. Anya didn’t have a support system like Spike, but she did have friends, which she just completely ignored. TL;DR: Spike and Anya are completely different situations and Xander was wrong to mention him Edit: people are comparing Angel and Anya, so let me break it down: Buffy had to kill Angel when she was 17, and back then, she didn’t have the experience she has now. She wanted to save the man she loved, who was taken over by a demon/soulless. She didn’t want to kill him, but she had to in order to save the world from being dragged into hell. She also wasn’t that aware as her role as the Slayer, and was still rejecting it, so she didn’t know what he would do without a soul, she thought he would be not that bad, and now she’s wiser and older For Anya, see above, I’m not repeating it here Edit 2: when I say Spike didn’t have a choice, I meant about being evil because he had a chip. Every evil thing he did is on him, he didn’t have a choice but to help the Scoobies because he was a blood knight and loved fighting, it’s not like he could hurt humans. Anya could have gone to her friends to help her through the pain of what Xander did, but she chose to become a demon again because she didn’t want to feel anything human, because then she’d have to deal with what happened at her wedding. Spike would rather go through torture to get a soul to give Buffy what she deserves than feel nothing, because at his core, he loves deeply and truly, even if it’s a demonic kind of love.
but getting his soul back was entirely his choice here my problme with that, IF spike could choice to get his soul back, THEN every evil he did was also by choice. either he can MAKE ALL his choices or he can make none. you cant have him say the good one i made and the bad one was becouse i DID not have a soul.

That's one thing I dislike about Xander. I know he's upset here because he still loves Anya but he acts like everything is so simple for Buffy. He forgets the sacrifice and pain Buffy's experienced through the years. Everything that was taken from her when she became the Slayer. Killing Angel is just one of a hundred other horrendous things Buffy's had to endure.

He takes her for granted. He thinks it’s so easy for Buffy and my guess is he’s still envious that out of all his friends, who have all gotten smarter and more powerful, he was never good enough to be the hero on a regular basis. So he takes his inferiority complex out on Buffy.
I haven't seen season 7 for a while but for the first half of this video I thought this was a skit or dream sequence, the writing really fell off in that last season damn ☹️
I think buffy never forgot about what she saw in the camera planted in the magic box......just saying, later in this season, when spike saves anya from a demon, buffy tells anya "what are you here for, being rescued?".....

@@az21bob666 Tara died in May of 2002 (Anya was a demon then). Dawn started a high school at the beginning of season 7. So, that's at least three months that Anya got to wreak havoc on people without Buffy trying to kill her. So, like I said, Buffy DID try to give Anya the benefit of the doubt, but it reached a point where she no longer could. And why should she keep giving free passes to someone who CHOSE to be a monster twice?

Angelus killed Jenny, tortured Giles and badly injured Willow so Xander had the right to want him dusted. Remember when the Master minions tried to revive him and kidnapped Willow and the others due to Buffy's negligence; Xander said to Buffy "If they hurt Willow, I will kill you"
Its sad that the lie Xander told got exposed here but never really became a thing. I mean he told her a big lie - Maybe some things would have gone different if Xander would have said what Willow really said.
I hater Xander so many times and this is one of the times. Telling Buffy she’s a hypocrite, and comparing Anya’s situation to Angel or Spike or Willow is insane. Buffy was 17 when Angel turned bad when she was only beginning to be the slayer when she was only trying to who she was and what she was meant to be. And yet she still did it, she killed the man she loved and that was when Angel had no choice (not when he had his soul taken from him). Then there’s Spike who had no choice. And Willow who was human and who lost herself. Anya chose to become a demon twice, furthermore based on her actions and her past they knew what she was capable of. That capacity for cruelty and hate and rage and darkness was why she was offered the Vengeance position multiple times. Buffy knows the risks, Buffy understands from her experiences that choices have to be made and you can’t step back from them. Xander yelling at her is annoying and ridiculous. Buffy is just doing her job. The only job she has. If she doesn’t put down the demons who knows what they’ll do next and she can’t take that chance
