Spike putting on the coat/embracing his inner demon is absolutely one of my favorite scenes. I really like all of the differences between Spike and Angel, both with a soul and without. Angel and Angelus are so drastically different, while Spike with and without a soul are very similar with more subtle differences. Angel often acts as though the demon is separate from himself, but in this moment, I feel like Spike blurs the line between his two selves and truly accepts what he is, in a way that I believe is much healthier than Angel.
@sparrowss1658
@sparrowss1658 5 лет назад
zsmorr92 that’s a good theory. I’ve always thought the reason why Angel and Angelus were two separate entities is because a soul was thrust upon Angel. It was a curse that made sure he would feel remorse and feel bad. Both times he was re-ensouled was against his will, so the curse is retained in some form. That’s why I feel like he’s so different from Angelus, while Spike isn’t. Spike voluntarily got his soul back. He probably can retain his personality more easily than Angel can. But this is just my head canon.
@zsmorr92
@zsmorr92 5 лет назад
@@sparrowss1658 I don't think that has anything to do with it, because if you look at them before either had a soul, vampire spike still acts a lot like his original self William (we especially see that in an upcoming episode). Angelus very quickly becomes different than Liam, (Angel also is quite a bit different than Liam, due to the things he's experienced). The theory I believe about how vampires work, is that usually they follow the template of the person they were. The stronger the template, the more like that person they are. William was a poet, he had a longing for love, and cared deeply about someone (I wont say as it's a slight spoiler). All traits that carry over into his vampire self. Liam by comparison is a much weaker template. He's a drunk with no real ambitions, who mostly just chases the pleasures of life. With less to work with, his vampire self kind of had to come up with his own personality.
@Kal911
@Kal911 5 лет назад
@@zsmorr92 exactly, the stronger your personality is the stronger your human side is still there when you're a vampire, even if it's twisted and without the human shades of emotions that give you really the chance to choose what to do. In fact The Judge told Spike and Drusilla that they had humanity in them, even if they were 100% evil, while Angelus literally had "no humanity in him". Drusilla's craziness remained in her, Spike being a sentimental and a poetry and art lover remained, Harmony's superficiality and frivolousness remained. However even Angelus had Liam's personality twisted in its worse version. He was all about whoring, drinking and caring about nothing, and as a soulless vampire he became a rapist, craving for blood and with zero concern about other people but their suffering. Liam had really no very strong good side of himself, his worst attitudes became the most relevant and twisted side of his vampire version. And so when he got back a soul, after all he has done, he couldn't go back to be that Liam, he was forced to change completely because of guilt.
@bunsmasterbunny
@bunsmasterbunny 5 лет назад
The show establishes early on that the Vampire and the Person before are not the same Being. The Person before dies and moves on to their respective afterlife while a demon from the original vampire's blood possesses their body and gains their memories and face value personality. Angel's Curse is a curse (And also an incredibly unfair case of victim blaming on the gypsies part) because they're forcing the actual Angel (Liam) out of his afterlife and back into his body where he is forced to be bombarded with the memories of what the demon inside did with his body. He feels guilty despite it not being something he actually did so he works to atone for it. Spike getting his Spirit Back pretty much erases the vampire and just brings the real William back down from his Afterlife and forces him to go through the guilt the demon did with the memories he has.

I always took Willow drawing off Anya and Kennedy not only due to physical proximity, but also their supernatural potential. Anya is an 1,100-year-old ex-demon twice over and Kennedy is the oldest of the potential. We know from Potential that they have some sort of quality (whether mystical or biological) that allows tracking spells to locate them and Kennedy's been a potential longer than any of the others. Besides Dawn and arguably Spike, out of anyone in the room when Willow went all Black Eyed Girl, Anya and Kennedy actually make the most sense.
@Ai-em2pu

Yes. The thing to notice isn't really "why Kennedy and Anya?" but "why not Xander?" who was also standing next to Willow. Kennedy and Anya is the natural choice for a power-fill up, Xander is only human.

Tldr the first slayer was created by basically doing the same as when creating a vampire - a young woman was merged with a powerful demon. Those who did it basically tried to add even more demon into the current slayer, because a slayer was made to kill vampires...not an army of thousands of super vampires. So yeah things are not looking too good.

#TeamBuffy forever. Our heroine had every reason to reproach everyone. It was the only way to deal with the situation, because when you're at war you can't stop crying for every dead person, and if you're too weak you won't go anywhere. Kennedy just has to keep quiet because she's still nobody compared to Buffy, Anya has to learn to be useful, and Spike ... well he seems to have at least understood why Buffy warned him that way. She didn't say she didn't appreciate the sacrifices he made for her love, (how many times she said she believed in him) but only that in this situation she didn't want a depressed Spike but the ruthless warrior of the past, and her words they are served all right. So this episode promoted Buffy, Spike, Xander, Dawn (what more can you do?) and Willow Kennedy and Anya rejected.
@pattheman3686

EVERYONE I've ever spoken too misinterprates the source of the Slayer's power. They ALWAYS ask "Which demon did the wise men put into the first Slayer?" The answer isn't THAT simple. The wording of the Slayer's power is specific, but ALWAY wrongly repeated. Everyone says "infused with the power of 'a' demon" The exact wording is "Infused with the power of 'THE' demon" Meaning that it wasn't just a particularly strong demon, it was the very essence of ALL demons. The energy source that created the very species. That's why the first Slayer went all savage and violent. She wasn't a protector of innocents, she was a predator of demons. She proactively hunted them down and destroyed them.
@RitsychServare
@RitsychServare 5 лет назад
Which kind of fits the term "Slayer" more... right? As opposed to a "defender of the innocent" But of course in Buffy's case, she was both. The first slayer fit that term which you could say is like a "demon killer". They couldn't have used another term that would better suit a description of someone who both protects the innocent and destroys evil... The Defender, the Guardian, etc.
@pattheman3686
@pattheman3686 5 лет назад
@@RitsychServare But the first Slayer didn't "protect" anyone; she was a straight up savage. she was the predator and demons were her prey. THAT'S what Buffy was rejecting; she even said so in the episode. When the wise men said they'd give her more power, she said "How ?? By making me less human??"
@RitsychServare
@RitsychServare 5 лет назад
@@pattheman3686 Exactly. Perhaps the slayer was intended to be basically a cold blooded killer of demons and not a protector of man when they put a demon in her. It's like they figured that in order for them to defeat evil, they have to use what they already have. A slayer was their powerful weapon against evil entities. A watcher was there to keep the Slayer in check, to make sure it or in this case, she, carried on with her duty. Had she been simply human, perhaps she'd be regarded as weaker and would not stand a chance. This is just my theory. I think over the years as the slayer line continued, they became less 'savage' or 'primal' like the monsters they've been fighting... just like how ancient vampires were more monstrous in appearance compared to Angelus' time and looked more human. The first Slayer probably lasted for a long time because of the demon those wise men put in her.

Buffy was wrong about Chloe. She's not an idiot, she's not stupid, and she's not weak. She's a 15 year old girl who is being forced to fight for her life against the literal devil and the devil broke her will to live by forcing her to talk with him for hours and hours. She's scared, vulnerable, and a child who's being forced into a destiny by a force that has no right to force that upon her. I get what Buffy was trying to do but she's very wrong and being incredibly disrespectful to people who deal with depression or suicide by saying that someone is "An Idiot, Stupid, Or Weak" for having those issues. Especially when Chloe is a child and was broken by talking to the devil who is a master manipulator and is able to make people miserable and despair just by being around him. The show should have called Buffy out on what she said as being not only disrespectful but also factually wrong and unfair not only to Chloe but to everyone else. I get that she's trying to scare them into being tougher to help them survive, but the show should have shown her later on admitting she didn't actually consider Chloe an idiot, stupid, or weak and that she was wrong to call her those things.

Way late to the party, but Chloe had a ton of people in the same situation as her she could open up to and talk with about it. She wasn't alone. But Buffy was. When Buffy was activated, she was probably 15 (I don't know how much time was between when she became the slayer and when she moved to Sunnydale, but it was probably a year. She was 16 when she was killed by the Master), and she was completely alone. No one to talk to about the evil she was facing, and when she tried to open up, her parents thought she was emotionally unhinged and put her in the mental hospital. She had to suffer all on her own. She only got a support group with Xander and Willow. Buffy was mad at Chloe because she gave up despite having everyone. She sees herself in all the potentials, and is distant at the same time. It comes across as harsh to an outsider, but she doesn't want anyone else to follow in Chloe's footsteps. (Also, Buffy is very frustrated. A lot is happening, and she certainly didn't ask to babysit potentials that have taken over her house. When you have to bury one by yourself, you are probably pretty upset, and come back to a room while a lot to say.)

This is to me one of the main differences between Angel and Spike. As harsh as Buffy's speech was (and I think she was choosing anger to fight her own grief), it helped Spike. He just needed those few words from her to snap out of his torment. She wouldn't have been able to make it work with Angel. He's much slower, needs more time to assimilate things (or a Cordy telling him what's what in her Cordy style). Love the feminist message with what I call the first watcher's council, but at the same time I'm uncomfortable with the race and cultural misrepresentation. Thanks, Shan!!!
@nodiggity4283
@nodiggity4283 5 лет назад
idk if it was his torment. Spike has been getting knocked out almost every fight since season 5. But I will agree he needed the push As for the first watchers council we know the first slayer was black so makes sense it would be African men. I've said many times I was never a fan of the introduction of the watcher's council since season 3 but these mystic principles are completely in line with what african tribes did. The only thing they got wrong is how they portrayed the men to do it as a way to subjugate the girl. In those societies warrior death is the most honorable and saying they did it because they were too scared is kinda rewriting the psychology of those tribes and how warrior tribes motives work. But we gotta have a patriarchal boogyman which is kinda annoying but it's fine. This episode has one of the most memorable in season 7 with the spinning slayer light box scene which is cool. But for some reason i always assume the Conversations with Dead people episode is the one that has that scene. But mostly because this season kinda just bleeds together for me a bit as it's my least watched season. This might actually be my first full rewatch of the season watching with all you guys

I've been thinking about the symbolism of the Slayer being female. Female creates: female is the echo of Gaia the Earth Mother in human form. The Earth Mother is one of the oldest Powers in pagan metaphysics, which this series leans heavily on. Being a product of a time & place where women are empowered, Buffy rejected the chains of the First Slayer's servitude. Unconsciously, she's tapped into that older Power, Gaia. The trick isn't to concentrate more power into the Slayer... It's to diversify it!!

Buffy was absolutely terrible in this episode. It bugs me when people say she was saying what needed to be said, because she really wasn't. Chloe wasn't weak, she was a scared child. Buffy herself tried to quit at 16 when she was afraid of dying, but she didn't have an evil entity on her shoulder pushing her to end her own life over it. That whole speech made me think that she was onto something in season 6 when she thought that she came back "wrong" because I can't see pre-death Buffy ever being that cold, even in such extreme circumstances.
@Buffy8Fan

Not a top ten least favorite for me, but I do consider it weak or at least boring and exposition heavy. Fun fact though. There is a DVD audio commentary in an earlier season, I think it is the one where Oz leaves town, where Joss asks what TTFN means. After hearing that exchange and watching this episode, I never thought it was a coincidence, but perhaps it was. I don't know. "Everyone sucks but me" isn't what Anya said Buffy said it was. Buffy meant the same thing Giles did one episode earlier when he was telling people off for not being prepared. Buffy just said it in a more "hard to hear" and "need to hear" way. Kennedy isn't doing anything different then any real drill sergeant has ever done. As for her going against Buffy, it might as well be a Sergeant going against a General. Giles has already told Buffy that is what she needs to be for the SIT's.

Another fun one. Yeah, this is where Kennedy really starts to seem more like a jackass. You're right that the "maggot" thing is totally inappropriate - it doesn't matter what military boot camp scenes she's watched in the movies. And then, at the group meeting - yes, Buffy could have handled it better, but Kennedy's been there about ten minutes - _she_ was the one out of line. And enjoyed watching you see Spike get his coat, and some of his mojo, back. (But - what was his coat doing in the school basement?! He didn't even bring it with him on his soul quest!)

The shadow scene was the first scene on this show that creeped me out since like Der Kindastod. I do agree with Buffy though, there was no reason to tie up a girl and give her the power, just give yourselves the power and fight. There was no need for the girl and I don't understand why they would have done that
@TheYasmineFlower
@TheYasmineFlower 5 лет назад
It's "Kindestod". Kind being child, tod being death, connected being Kindestod. (I'll never get over how royally they screwed up thatr pronunciation) They probably did it that way so that they wouldn't have to risk their lives and limbs. Let the girl fight for them, and if she wins, they're safe, and if she loses, they'll get themselves another and continue to be safe. And continue to never have to actually risk anything themselves.

@@TheYasmineFlower i mean i looked up Der Kindestod multiple times I'm glad I'm that close. I used to spell it completely different. I think I spelled it Derkinderstad back in the day The issue I have with the slayer thing is if you studied warrior tribes of the past to die would be honorable for your tribe. There is honor in dying as a warrior. It always bugged me how they tried to frame it that this would somehow be an attack. But also if it's honorable to die why wouldn't they give it to an already warrior. If you need a frame of reference to understand what I mean look at the movie 300 and the battle of Thermopylae. To die is not a curse you will go to the Elisian fields in a heavenish place. Almost all mystic tribes and such view death in fighting to be a noble cause, so the show framing it that it was a way to avoid fighting themselves always felt very fantastical and not based in actual history of those tribes

Joss made the show about female empowerment and the shadowmen that eventually became the Watchers council (mostly men) was indicative of patriarchal society. They put the dark power in the girl, forced it in her actually and used her as their weapon which they just ordered around and tried to control. Until Buffy cut loose from them that is.

I like buffy's speech, she's right in a lot of ways and I get her frustration. At first I was a bit mad at her for treating spike that way then realized she was right about that too. He was a better fighter when he was souless and relished the violence. I think buffy was trying to make him remember yes you are a better person, I believe in you, but don't forget we are in a war and I need you to be a warrior too. She had to make him see that. Albeit harshly, considering he's been helping her train the potentials and he's been physically not at his best.

Spike worked extremely hard to get his soul back so I get Buffy’s point but she needs to be careful not to push too hard cus if he literally went back to being souless, she’d still have a problem with him. It’s not fair to put someone in a position where they can’t win either way. Besides, pre soul Spike still had the chip in his head. So even then he was still limited. Season 2 Spike is who fought the hardest. Fighting like your former self without actually going back to being evil is not an easy balance. That comment about Spike not fighting as hard can be said about Angel not fighting as hard as Angelus

I've had to grow a thick skin over the years because of my life experiences, but I still wouldn't tolerate someone treating me like that. Personally I think people who treat others badly as a form of "tough love" are weak themselves. The former will only lead to more insecurity and repression than it's worth.

The way she treated Chloe and the other Potential's is terrible and I get she is trying to toughen them up, but as we see it only works when Buffy gets real with everyone. I really love "TTFN" Tigger/Winnie The Pooh reference. Some of these girls are only barely 15 years old so they still love kid things, while others are quite a bit older and have at least been trained by Watchers. If was Robin Wood during this introduction to the Scooby Gang and #OperationKillTheFirst, I would laugh and then get the fuck outta town because they are a mess right now. And then we get the shadow puppets and one last Slayer history lesson before it all goes to hell(mouth). We learn that the shadow men created the first Slayer with demon essence and that there a millions of Turok-Han' underground, in the Hellmouth just waiting to be let, to make that comment about Buffy being the last guardian come true.
