To answer your question, yes, everyone did their own singing. While you can tell who the professional singers were (Anthony Stewart Head, Amber Benson and James Marsters) they all did pretty well. The scene in the Bronze with Dawn was added because Michelle Trachtenberg was a professionally-trained dancer. "Standing in the Way" is the one time that a song seemingly isn't heard. It's explained by the fact that Buffy doesn't want to hear what Giles is singing, just like she hasn't wanted to hear him when he's tried to talk to her about taking responsibility.
@VBane
@VBane Год назад
There is also the facts thats she's in slow motion while he's singing in regular time, so her perception of what he's saying would be odd anyway.
@othergrimm6592

I don't think Amber Benson was actually a professional singer. She just happened to have a lovely voice. More fun facts, Michelle Trachtenberg was supposed to have more singing lines, but got sick, so they had to change it. Alyson Hannigan also THREATENED to get sick if she was given too many singing lines, because she didn't want to sing. xD

Just so you know some writers/producers were also singing in this episode. David Fury had gotten his shirt back with out the mustard stain and Marti Noxon was getting the traffic ticket. And the three dancing street sweepers in the background also played the three marionette/ventriloquist dummy minions of the demon.

The thing that sets this episode apart from so many other musical episodes is that it's a full-on homage to Hollywood musicals. It's not a gimmick that's having a bit of fun with, or making fun of, the genre, it's more like a love letter to it. THAT'S why it has the dolly shots, and the overheads, and a whole bunch of moments that directly and indirectly reference movies like Singin' in the Rain. And all of it is done with a coherent plot that delivers integral exposition for the overall story. The cherry on top is that it manages to do all of this and STILL finds time to slip in non-musical references: the bit where Xander talks about respecting and taming doughnuts is a reference to a Tom Cruise line in Magnolia that you probably won't find it on RU-vid. It's used in Buffy because it was a very well-known quote at the time, even to people that hadn't seen the film.

Considering the amount of tragedy in her life and that the others don't notice as they have their own issues, it's not that surprising she suffers from Kleptomania. This episode, unlike a lot of 'novelty' episodes in TV shows, absolutely relies on you knowing what has happened before and moves the plot onward.

It may not be immediately apparent, but if you listen closely to the demons's lyrics, you'll find out that part of the magic forcing people to sing also forces them to spill all their secrets, so that's why all the songs so clearly stated all the thinga the character's have been hiding. Also, the magic only forced people to tell their secrets, but it wouldn't force people to listen to them. Both Willow and Buffy were afraid of losing their closest relationships that they're been in strong denial that any problems in them existed. You can see that in Buffy as was talking to Giles. She was plainly in looking past his obvious shagrin that she was offloading her responsibilities onto him. So, when they didn't hear Giles or Tara's singing, it was becauee of denial. They didn't want to hear those secrets, so they didn't hear them.

Saw this pop up and immediately clicked it, this is my favorite episode!! Love your reaction!! Below is some background on the filming I picked up from watching cast interviews. This was the cast singing their own songs. Willow and Dawn did not want to sing, so they kept their parts minimal, Dawn was trained as a dancer so they worked a dance scene in for her. James Marsters has talked about the filming of this many times at his Cons. How instead of a script they got a cassette tape with a recording of Joss and his wife singing the songs. How mostly they were all bewildered and somewhat terrified and several tried to get out of it. And they pretty much thought this was going to ruin the show, but figured they'd go out with a bang. Everyone buckled in, got voice and dance coaches. (both Anthoney Head and James Marsters were already in bands outside of buffy). The songs were kind of tailored to the style of the actors and the mood he wanted to provoke in the scene (you were right on with the disney princess thing with Willow/Tara also, the first Buffy song, was meant to feel kind of like "part of your world" from the little Mermaid). The first scene that was completed was the Xander Anya duet, the whole crew got to watch it (pre production) and that lit the fire, and made them realize, hey this might actually be great.

One thing that always bugged me about Giles is that he might not have wanted to be her father figure, but it still was his job to be her watcher. If he wanted to leave then he should have arranged for a replacement to come in. Buffy always needed someone good with the books and doing the research.

Not to mention Giles is being paid extremely well by the Watcher's Council - and owing his back pay and reinstatement to Buffy in S5 episode Crossroads - whilst the magically conscripted Slayer isn't. In real life, Tony Head wanted to spend more time with his kids in England so that had to be written in to the plot.

While this is far from a one off episode, it's surprising how much it comes across that way to people who react to it without having seen the first 106 episodes. It's all the actors own singing voices. 5:21-5:28 always sounded like a line an actor said, not something Buffy the character was saying. I don't know why because it is something Buffy would say. Willow sleeping with Tara at the end of _Under Your Spell_ shows Willow raping Tara. I also think that if the did just after the spell was enacted in the last episode, it was rape then as well As long as Willow knows Tara was upset with her, changed Tara's feelings (by erasing her memories), it is rape and sexual assault for sex and intimacy moments between them until Tara reads the book on what the flower is and starts singing the reprise. And even then it would be because now Tara is acting the way she was when Willow first cast the spell. Xander: "She doesn't know what pleases" or Xander: "She doesn't know what please is?" I know which one it is as I've been watching this episode for 22 years and have a lyric book, but I'm curious as to how many people don't know. They each have a different meaning. I never understood people being grossed out by Sweet removing his mouth. I love the look on Willow's face (and the other three to some degree) when Buffy said they pulled her out of heaven. Especially from someone who was both patting herself on the back over resurrecting her and was upset Buffy didn't thank her. I don't consider it a poor Willow (or Xander, Tara, and Anya) moment. It was a _everything Spike and Giles said about magic just after Buffy was resurected_ was right moment. I used to think Buffy was suicidal in the moment where Spike stops her from dancing herself to death, and while I don't think so anymore I do think she needed to hear her own words to Dawn, repeated by Dawn. Odd cut that we go from Jen saying she thought it was Dawn to after Xander admits it was him and never said anything until the group started asking questions about who it really was.

I think it would be very difficult to pull this off as a stage musical, simply because every single character and moment and plot point is so specifically tied to the many seasons and episodes that have led up to it. It would just lose 90% of its brilliance outside the context of the series.

@@dereknolin5986 Oh yes, I agree. Knowing and loving these characters, built up over 6 years time -- makes this a very emotional watch for the fans. This was a fun episode back when I first saw it aired... this was actually hyped quite a bit and fans knew it was coming - but not many people knew exactly how musically talented some of the cast members were at the time (nor were they sure about Joss Whedon's song-writing abilities) This was very much an "experimental" (let's see if we can do this) kind of episode - apparently several of the cast members would gather after shooting and some of them would sing and perform at these gatherings/parties - which inspired this episode. Amber Benson's singing voice was a shocker to fans ... Anthony Stewart Head and James Marsters were known singers/perfomers before this. Buffy's songs might've been some of the more difficult ones to pull off as she has the opening number (setting up the whole bit) and the number that goes off-rhythm and changes pace several times throughout (those numbers have grown on me over time - but I wasn't sure about them at first listening) For MORE of Joss Whedon's musical performance type stuff ... I highly HIGHLY recommend you watch the three part web-series DOCTOR HORRIBLE'S SING-A-LONG BLOG with Neil Patrick Harris (nuff said!)

One of the best episodes ever, and a regular contender with s4's Hush for the top spot. I've been waiting for this reaction since season one at least partially to see how many "oh mys" we'd get from you between the Spike/Buffy scenes and the more intimate Willow/Tara ones, and I think you set a new personal record. I loved that this wasn't just a gimmick episode, but also moved the story forward in important and even surprising ways, from the curse forcing Buffy to reveal to the Scoobies that they'd torn her from heaven to Buffy and Spike's curtain-closing kiss, and sets up future conflicts with Willow/Tara and Buffy/Giles due for some difficult discussions and confrontations. Some trivia: Originally Joss wanted everyone to sing their own parts but Buffy, whose singing voice would be dubbed by Jewel (yes, the folk-pop singer). SMG refused to be known as the only one in the cast who didn't do her own singing, so that idea was dropped. Alyson Hannigan was originally going to have more singing parts, but had about as much confidence in her vocal abilities as Willow does . She later regretted it after hearing herself sing the few lines she had, and realizing she didn't sound as bad as she'd feared. The man singing about the mustard stain was show writer David Fury. The woman singing about the parking ticket was Executive Producer Marti Noxon, and I think I may be able to get a bonus 'oh my' out of you with the full lyrics to her song, the last line of which can be hard to catch in the actual episode: I've been having a bad bad day C'mon won't you put that pad away I'm asking you please no It isn't right it isn't fair There was no parking anywhere I think that hydrant wasn't there Why can't you let it go I think I've paid more than my share I'm just a poor girl don't you care Hey I'm not wearing underwear

She was all for being dubbed until she read the lines, and realized that the singing was going to be how everyone else found out where she'd been. The fact that you got to this point without being spoiled for this episode is amazing. A lot of shows that do musical episodes never get it right, and it offers very little to the plot. This however is the exception. Not only is this an innovative episode in term of plot and foreshadowing, it's a damn good 'musical'. The songs are really good and well structured, and just work so well in the episode. There is also great comedy in the episode with the lyrics. Of course the massive reveal for the group is Buffy telling them she was dragged out of Heaven, Spike already knew this of course, and then Dawn repeats to Buffy 'the hardest thing in this world is to live in it' the exact words Buffy said to Dawn in The Gift S5 Finale. Spike getting fed up with singing is very funny towards the end, but what an ending when Buffy follows him. It was brilliantly done, and now with Buffy and Spike kissing, the whole direction of the show takes a strange turn with some brilliant, but disturbing episodes to follow. This really was a brilliant episode, Lorne from Angel would have loved this.

@@ReelReviewsWithJen i'm not sure which version you had. After Anya finishes "It must be bunnies!!" In the original she sees everyone giving her weird looks so she adds, "Or maybe midgets?" Also on Tara's song that was getting...frisky. When Tara is singing , "You make me com...plete. You make me com..plete". The last one cuts off. So just you make me com/fast edit to Xander and Buffy at the Magic box. In the comments on the DVD Joss says that's the closest I've ever written to pron.

The original dvd’s of the series, even the foreign language dubs did their own (mostly, I think there’s a couple that might’ve outsourced) singing. (Yeah..I’ve watched all the foreign language versions too..I clearly have a lot of time on my hands..lol..) The Spanish version had such a rough time in the “walk through the fire” counterpoint they just fade it out completely and bring them back in when it gets easier. Such an awesome accomplishment all around from Joss composing it to an amateur cast pulling it off in the middle of a season with incredible time constraints! So many things ppl never mention, like the split timing in Giles’ song to Buffy where she’s in slow motion and he walks in normal speed around her.

Buffy is the first sci-fi show to do a musical. That was ground breaking, and then others followed. There was a fantasy show that tried it, Xena, but it didn't have as much impact. Actually, Buffy and Angel were the first shows to do a lot of things that future shows and movies took inspiration from. A brooding but caring vampire that falls in love with a human.....(vampire diaries, twilight) Not one, but 2 vampires having a baby....SUCK IT, TWILIGHT!😂 😋 Gay coupling/kiss...etc. There is a soundtrack for this episode out. It's even now available on Vinyl records for those who are into the nostalgic record players that. Saw it at Walmart. Back in the day, especially, and throughout the years there have been people putting on stage productions of this episode. A few years ago I accidentally found one of a high school production of it. They'd have the singing scenes on a projector above the stage so people could visually connect the show with the stage actors doing it alongside the show. People have confessed to playing the soundtrack in their cars and singing along with it...even with friends. Their songs get stuck in your head. Walk through the fire lives in my head rent free from time to time. Lol

I heard you say "These are conversations they would actually have" but ironically the opposite is true. The point of this episode is that they are all forced to say what they wouldn't say out loud without the spell's effect. And Joss Whedon has described it as the opposite of the episode Hush where secrets were revealed without the option to address it with conversation.

Given that - unlike the Slayer since she was magically conscripted into the most important job on earth - Giles is being paid by the Watcher's Council - and owes that fact and his backpay to Buffy's intervention in season 5 episode Checkpoint it's rather outrageous that Buffy is made to feel guilty or childish for accepting Giles' financial help. Particularly given that Giles was presumably paid enough until fired by the Watcher's Council and losing the librarian position to spend the whole of season 4 out of work with enough left over to buy the Magic Box.

To be fair... Buffy has a stressful full-time job that she isn't being paid for. Makes getting a 'proper' job or an education not really an option for her. Meanwhile, Giles is the closest thing she has to a parental figure, and Giles is not only doing very well with the magic shop, but is still getting paid by the Watchers Council as well. The Council absolutely should pay the Slayer at least as well as their Watchers.

Xena began the musical trend, being the first great musical episode and because of that brilliant episode, The Bitter Suite, Buffy and other shows decided to create their own, following the Xena concept. The first Xena musical was SO brilliant that the thought was that it couldn't be bettered, then the very next year Buffy did Once More With Feeling and shockingly topped Xena. No other series musical since those two have come anywhere close to Xena and Buffy. It was Xena that gave Joss the idea that a musical just might work, and he did Joe Loduca one better.
@LordHyena
@LordHyena Год назад
"The Bitter Suite" appeared in Xena's third season, which was concurrent with Buffy's second season. This episode did not come out until Buffy's sixth season, the first season after Xena ended. Whether this episode "topped" Xena's is purely a matter of opinion, but it's a virtual certainty that Joss Whedon had already wanted to do a musical episode before he knew of Xena's. However, he may have refrained from attempting it until XWP was no longer in production.

@@LordHyena Joss Whedon stated in fact that he got his idea to go ahead with the Buffy musical (he got the idea and began working out the concept from a previous party at his house where he noticed several of the cast could really sing but didn'tfollow through due to the idea that a musical was too risky) directly from the success of The Bitter Suite so he made and released it the following season. You are incorrect on you series dates. My video collection package release dates back that up. Also, I watched each series faithfully and Xena was a year ahead.
@LordHyena
@LordHyena Год назад
@@susansokoloski2233 No, I am not mistaken about the dates, rest assured. Xena’s “The Bitter Suite” aired on February 2, 1998. Buffy “Once More With Feeling” aired November 6, 2001. Xena had already done its second musical episode, “Lyre, Lyre, Hearts On Fire” during its fifth season, which corresponded with Buffy’s fourth. Xena’s 6th and final season corresponded to Buffy’s 5th. Buffy’s “Once More With Feeling” was released during that show’s 6th season.

20:46 - not true.. Stage musicals, being a form of entertainment for over a century have often played with the level of awareness that the characters have of themselves being in a show. In Gilbert and Sullivan's _The Pirates of Panzans,_ Kevin Kline's Pirate King starts dueling the conductor of the symphony when he enters the stage (the Conductor wins of course - as it is a comedy) while in Sondheim's _Into The Woods_ the fairy tale characters accuse the Narrator of the story in their misfortune, instead of their own selfishness during the second act, and lynch him - thus finishing, to their belief, the story - that one being a satire on fairy tales, is not really played for laughs. In this lies the genius in this episode. Joss Whedon truly understood Musicals, on all of their mechanisms to tell a story and used them to their fullest. An "unspoken" rule of Musicals is that "When the emotions run high, you sing, and when the song runs high - you dance" .
