The uniqueness of the Picos de Europa is close to the sea. From many vantage points, the view goes from the green coast of the Cantabrian Sea, over the deep gorges and blooming meadows to bizarre rock formations. The Bufones de Pria are located between Llanes and Ribadesella on the edge of the Picos de Europa. Bufones are called clowns.
The buffoons are open cracks and chimneys in the rock of the cliff, connected with sea crevices, through which the waves of the sea push the water with great force and form spray nozzles on the surface, which are visible from the outside and can shoot at a height of more than twenty metres during stormy seas.
These formations are in limestone. They originate from the dissolution of the rock by water and leave behind a chimney that connects the sea in its lower part with the surface of the cliff. A bufón is created by the pressure of the sea surf, which forces water through natural pipes in porous limestone. Bufones can be created wherever karst landscapes border the sea. In this case it is the Picos de Europa.
When the tide is high and the sea strong, a large amount of water pushed by the waves penetrates with great force from the bottom of the Bufones and rises up the narrow channel, creating a characteristic whistling or snorting from the holes in the ground that gives the formation its name.
In the autumn and winter months, when the sea is the stormiest, water jets are blown out more often than in summer.
When discharging the water fountains, it is important to keep a distance to the opening of the holes, as the water can escape unexpectedly and under high pressure, carrying stones, wood, algae, etc. The water can be dragged along. It is also not advisable to look beyond the cliff, as it is a cracked subsoil that could be ceded at a certain point in time.
My hike started at high tide on the beach of Guadamía over the Bufones, above the coast, then over the Playa del Canal to the Playa de Cuevas del Mar and back along the same path, where I was able to walk far into the sea at low tide on the Playa Guadamia.
