Angler's Covey Guide, Brian Hilbert, walks us through everything you need to know for fishing blue wing olive nymphs! Brian focuses on the pre-emergence and the emergence, discussing rigging, fly selection, observations and the types of water that are best to fish during each stage.
Blue Wing Olives are a very important hatch for our rivers and streams here in Colorado, especially on the South Platte River in Cheesman Canyon, Elevenmile Canyon and the Deckers area. We are fortunate enough to have healthy blue wing olive hatches throughout the year, making them one of our most popular hatches.
Angler's Covey Guide, Neil Luhring did an excellent video on fishing blue wing olive adults from a dry fly approach last year, you can watch that video here:

I've really enjoyed your Bug of the Month series. It's great that you show how to tie a fly AND then how to fish it.

This was the goal! Thank you for your feedback and we’re thrilled to hear you are enjoying our videos. Which is your favorite series that we’ve done?

The BWO and Caddis BoMs are my favorites because I catch a lot of fish on them in the Eastern Sierras here in California.

@@BP-1988 excellent! That’s great to hear! Are your caddis hatches the primary insect in your region? Any of the patterns we’ve shared work out there as well?

Our best hatches are probably BWOs in spring and then in the fall. We get caddis usually late spring/early summer. PMDs are usually good May/June/July. This year was a little harder to fish because our rivers and steams ran unusually high from the amount of snow and rain we got. My go to BWOs are: BWO Comparaduns, BWO Parachute Duns, Barr's BWO Emergers, PTNs, WD40s and RS2s. For Caddis, my go tos are a Partridge Caddis, Brooks Hot Creek Caddis, CDC Caddis and Lafontaine Sparkle Pupa. Also, I tie most of these in small sizes - 18-24s

@@BP-1988 we had a similar summer. Lots of water! Sounds like your favorite flies are all great producers here in Colorado as well!

Thanks for the excellent video. Could you answer two questions: 1. What knot do you use to create your dropper tags? 2. What is the diameter of your dropper tags? Thanks.

A drop-shot rig with a bobber up top? Or did you switch to traditional shot and indicator rig?
