The race was staged for the purpose of entertainment. A veyron would not lose to F1 off the line and would win with higher margin. Only place where F1 would have a chance of challenging veyron would be on a circuit.

Actually, the McLaren F1 is as reliable as a Camry although it may not seem like that. So I was watching a video where Gordon Murray was recalling a conversation he was having with a German owner who used to daily his McLaren to his office and he used to drive it daily on the autobahn but he never had any issues with the car. It is because the car ha so little that there is nothing to actually go wrong. Also, an almost unmodified McLaren F1 won the 24 hours of LeMans. So despite the reliability issues which most British cars suffer from, the McLaren F1 is not one of them.

​@@jklinn570 it is. It didn't any electronic aids because that was the driver could feel what the car was doing better. It's a naturally aspirated V12 engine from the 1990s, and it kept up with a turbo charged w16. McLaren F1 simply optimised the power it had, it was never made to be a hyper car

@@jklinn570 you gotta understand this car wasn’t built for speed it’s creator a mad man never wanted speed or for it to be raced (his creator is also responsible for the best looking f1 car ever the one with a fan of you know) this was just a ultimate driving machine his designer didn’t allow for things like assisted driving or something like that in it was meant to give you the most pure driving experience ever it wasn’t meant for speed it was meant to last there was a doctor who did 230 on average everyday to reach his clinic and it never broke down for that time only problem a slight cylinder misfire which is simple to fix

The Bugatti wasn't launched on purpose to give the McLaren a chance. Hammond admitted to it himself. A real drag race would not have been this close.

Let's not forget the engine in the McLaren would've went into the bmw m8 at the time but instead bmw sold the engine design to McClaren lol

True it was a massive leap forward for performance cars when it came out the fastest road car money could buy was the jaguar XJ220 which was tested to a top speed of 217 mph and up till then the top speed of supercars had gone up in very small increments of 1 or 2mph for example the Porsche 959 was king at 199mph and then came the Ferrari F40 at 201, then it was 205, 207, 212 and then up to 217, the McLaren's top speed of 240 mph was a leap forward that didn't just take the crown from the jaguar, it made the jaguar look positively sluggish, almost everyone who drove a McLaren when it was new from the people who bought one to journalists and test drivers all said the same thing, it didn't matter what you'd driven before, Porsches, Lamborghinis, Ferraris or even the XJ220, the McLaren was in a league all of its own, it was like an F15 eagle in a world war 2 era dogfight of mustangs and messerschmitts. This video shows that while the maclaren isn't quite in a class of it's own anymore, it doesn't take long to call the roll.

i would say the ford GT40 or Dodge Viper would be, just from actual racing wins and actual racing records, the f1 is top notch and a monster, but just because of the US usually doing drag cars, the GT40 and Viper getting racing crowns over all comers was a monstrous hill to overcome and they dominated, i would put GT40 first (Mopar fan) Viper 2nd and F1 3rd, 4th probably Nissan or Mazda, they made some incredible machines in racing

Here's how nutty the difference between these two cars is: line both cars up and let the McLaren accelerate to 120 mph before setting off in the Veyron. You'll still reach 200mph before the F1. No, really. Top gear purposely didn't properly launch the car to make this race more interesting. But the fact remains, in the real world, that F1 stands no chance in a drag race.

@@Toxic2T Which for me is what counts. It’s why for instance Koenisegg walks over Bugatti. The One:1 and Regera not only have impressive as hell acceleration times (0-300 quicker than the Chiron, and the Regera 0-400 smokes it), but the fact that both cars also have decent track times. The Regera even beat a Senna on a track in Sweden. The F1 for me is still the superior car to the Veyron because of that reason.

The Bugatti is just a heavy pos only meant to go straight but in this race the Bugatti should have been ahead from the begging

the F1 has a better power/weight ratio, and modern tyres are grippier than the 1990s ones its performance figures were measured on. especially if they're sticky semi-slicks!

Consider this, a detuned F1 with only a rear wing and no front splitter with the same road car steering rack and manual transmission won the Le Mans 24 hours (of course they used carbon brakes, but still). The Road Going F1 might not beat the Veyron's time on Top Gear. Those tires are ancient. The steel brakes fade. And the road suspension is too soft for a true track machine.

But yes, maybe the Bugatti would lose, but with the Turbos there's pressence of Turbo Lag and lose of Grip, because the F1 is RWD so it could be a hard mission after all.

If the F1 had to adhere to the same 2005+ safety standards as the Veyron it would be considerably slower than it is with all the additional weight. Even with all the extra weight, the Veryon would have dusted the F1 off the line if it was using launch control. For cinematic suspense, the Veyron was handicapped with Richard Hammond driving it with no launch control in this clip. Also, keep in mind the Veyron is 14 years old now. It's only about 12 years newer than the F1.

V16 1000 HP quad Turbo vs v12 617HP good. The McLaren F1 was once the fastest car, but when it came to the Bugatti Veyron supersport, the American Hennessey Venom GT, the McLaren lost a lot and was literally easily defeated.

It did it only when pushed to the limit (rev limiter taken off etc). Dauer 962 (more or less the same age as F1), was legitly doing over 250mph back then with 730hp (twin turbo 3.0l Porsche's flat 6).
