There are too many tiny amps flooding the market..They all sound small & nasally to my ears..Gimme a 50watt head anyday or 100watts, thats where the tone is..Even a 30watt combo tube amp,Lets get back to big ol' ballsy tube amps..I'm wanting to try the Bugera 300watt bass amp..The price is killer & the biasing system is great i just wonder how the quality is being its a $600 amp..
Funny you should say that, Bugera has a 50watt version of the amp demonstrated in this video. I am veeery interested in how that one sounds. Not a big fan of tiny amps myself, well besides the tiny terror, i like that one :)
You know that's not how amps work, right? Plus, you then start talking about bass amps. So which is it? If you're a bass player, I'm sure most guitar amps sound nasally to you. But, if you know anything about tubes and wattage... 10, 50, 100... doesn't make much of a difference in what your ears can perceive. Run a 5w amp thu a 4x12 and up until your ears start to bleed, you're never going to hear the difference. Another thing, those 100w heads, are rarely running at 100w. They wouldn't last very long. When you go to concerts and you see a big wall of amps, looks like the guys are standing in front of, the real amp could be under the stage, a 1x12 combo, mic'd properly, running thru the venue PA. I'm 48... if I can get with technology catching up to and bringing new life to the tube market, I'm all for it. And bringing low wattage, affordable, "tiny amps" onto the market, is the way to do that. As an old tech in the Navy, I worked on tube amps (weapons control gear, not guitar amps)... that stuff was Korean war/Vietnam era stuff and rapidly dying. The amp I worked on, stood 6' tall, 6 drawers and probably close to 30 - 36 tubes in it. Still, during the 90s, finding, testing, ($$$) paying for guitar amp tubes, was a rough proposition. Now you can buy custom sets of JJ, EV and such for decent prices. But, what you hear... what's making that sound... are just those tiny little tubes. Their the same tubes that are in 50/100w heads and they're actually operating on the same voltages, often. Its not the BIG wattage amp. Its that tube, its saturation point, efficiency, etc... that gives you tube warmth, depth, tone. Not wattage. Wattage is just headroom.
