They are apples and oranges... ETCG does what he's familiar with, though he's not into scopes and he did lots of work for dealer. Eric O grew up tinkering with things, a family that did this for a living, as far as I know never went to a formal school for wrenching, and exposed to more variety than ETCG, like farm tractors, diesel rigs, etc.

TOTALLY agree. I've seen ETCG do some things Eric O. would never do. I don't even watch any of his stuff anymore. The Fairmont project did it for me but I was on the edge anyway.
@CubasAutomotive
@CubasAutomotive 5 лет назад
@@jws3925 yeah, the Fairmount did it for me too, though I do check out some of the topics from time to time, just not so much the repair stuff. Plus the latest was the Mini, and I certainly have no interest there. I just think that everyone has their interests and their own niche, not to say one is better than another.
@CleanSC
@CleanSC 5 лет назад
Two different channels, for sure. SMA is more diagnostic stuff, ETCG was more nuts and bolts and DIY stuff. They came from different beginnings which colors their directions. The Fairmont was not his audience but it was a passion project for him so I wouldn't fault him for it. The MINI Series was very educational on several levels so it was a worth watch for most, whether you fix cars or not. Cliff Notes: MINIs are expensive junk, stay away. A very valuable lesson to be had there, even for techs. Now I know if someone comes at me with one, or asks me about buying one, I know exactly how to advise them. Both good channels.

Shops that tell customers to "go pound sand" are forgetting about the internet business review sights. Customers can go online and report their negative experience to the whole world. It can put those shops put of business. They also forget that the customer could be a lawyer, related to a lawyer, or work for a lawyer.

from what I saw the failure was almost certainly NOT related to the work the first shop performed(in fact the customer was aware some of the things were not working BEFORE the elbows were replaced) Tho bad business if they did say "pound sand" I have had customers tell me things about nearby shops I know they would never say or do IMO the module was already bad and the customer noticed the other failures due to "heightened awareness" post repair)

Other shop had no class, it doesn't matter if they had anything to do with the failure or not. Never tell a customer to pound sand! However I heard the old phrase "ever sense you worked on my car" more times than I can count. Some how some customers think just because you work on their car everything that goes wrong from there on is your fault. In 45 years I never told one to go pound sand. I did throw one or two out of my shop after they threatened to beat me up!

For us DIY'ers: The Class 2 Serial Data network on a GM uses a zero to Seven Volt signal; the voltage rests at Zero volts when there is NO communication; the transmitted data is a variable pulse width signal; Class 2 is found at Pin # 2 of the DLC, and is a single-wire network system; and GM uses what is referred to as a “splice-pack” to connect modules and the DLC to each other for network communication. Great video Eric, that little U scope is getting around!

Many shops get a bad rap despite there innocence As they knew they were not involved in anything that should have caused this failure I can understand the unwillingness to "fix it for free" I doubt they told the consumer to"pound sand" more like "sorry sir our work was in the engine compartment and unrelated to the problems caused by a trunk-mounted module" The consumer then bad mouthed the shop and may well have told SMA"they told me to pound sand"

A friend of mine had a Mercedes, one of the small ones. The air intake for the hvac pulled air off the top of the battery. I couldn't believe that stupidity.

19:40 on... bends needle stabbing for a ground (habit from using more robust stabby things), "And with the module still plugged in we still got.... nothing, cos my wire fell out" - I had to stop to compose myself I was laughing so hard. Not laughing at you there Mr O, I do similar work and it just struck a chord with me that the exact same type of things happen from time to time, usually comes in a wave of "oops.. didn't mean to do that", "oops.. that doesn't plug in there", "ummm... that was working a minute ago... left this cable detached testing something else dummy"... and on and on. I have been known to just walk away for 10 minutes to regain composure when it happens, it's almost as though my cognitive functions went bye bye and need a short nap or a reboot while at the same time everything around conspires to befuddle my diagnosing. :D For the record, today was my dropsy day - every tool, fastener, piece of paper... anything, that came into my hands was promptly sucked away by gravity. The smaller it was the further it managed to flit away into a dark crevice or under some immovable object requiring ridiculous amounts of time to retrieve. And no I did not go to work drunk! Hope it's not just me that has days like this :D I love the look of that mini scope, so portable for confined spaces I sometimes find myself in.

After all this time and all the crazy situations, it took bending a needle probe to finally swear in surprise.

Thank you for going through some of the electrical issues in a car. It really helps to see the thought process and how to narrow down the problem. Keep up with the great videos. I like the magnetic LED light you use. Do you have a brand name on it to share? Again thanks. Mike

That AES Wave oscilloscope case looks just like one of my gun cases save for the fancy logo.
