Repairing some pulled out plated through-holes and doing some thing about the LCD back lighting for the odometer display. Rebuild includes all new X27 stepper motors and new back lighting.
i know im asking randomly but does any of you know a tool to log back into an Instagram account?? I somehow forgot the login password. I love any tricks you can offer me
@Jamari Stetson i really appreciate your reply. I found the site on google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff atm. I see it takes a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
I am here to confess that this is the instrument cluster from my daughter's Buick Rendezvous and yes I attempted to repair it myself and massively failed at it. Thanks to one of Jeff's other videos I decided to contact him about repairing ours. While this one took a little longer to repair, we had it back within about 10 days from originally shipping it out to Jeff. He was honest about the extensive damage and I feel charged a fair price for the additional time to repair and we are very satisfied with his work. I just want to say thank you again for the extra effort and not giving up on it.
@ JEM Trent3 I am trying to think if I have ever seen anyone fess up to a failed attempt as you did Sir. That deserves a huge pat on the back. I have watched a few of Jeff's videos now and am amazed at his ability to look over and access the damages of these "you worked on it first" repairs and calmly correct the mistakes. This video surprised me when he said you needed a new board and then two seconds later he shows us the repaired board after you two talked. Thank you for authorizing the repair, for whatever reason you did, and give us the opportunity to see that cluster work again.
Been watching your vids for a while now and I must say I'm impressed, I found your channel by chance in the YT suggested vids. But this repair was something that most repairers would have just thrown their arms up in the air and walked away and I wouldn't have blamed you if you had too. I work on classic vehicle instruments, these electronic instruments are way over my head but often I get the self repairs or the "impossible" ones that have been in a car in a field for 60 years. I don't know if it's the same way for you but for me, restoring the seemingly "impossible" ones gives huge satisfaction and a happy customer.
Are you interested in taking on more? I currently turn away the older mechanical clusters and have no one to reccomended them to. Thanks for the kind comment!
@@jeffescortlx I'm in Australia which would make things difficult. I WISH, I lived in the U.S. there would be so much more work in this field. In the U.S. it's so much easier to get spares for so many things and while there are a lot of "car guys" (and girls) here, Australia just isn't in the same league for cars as the U.S. But hey, if I was in the U.S. I'd take you up on that offer. :o) Or, if you have customer who has something they can't get repaired anywhere else, it may be possible. Most mechanical classic car instruments in Australia were made by Flexdrive, where I did my apprenticeship, which was the Aussie arm of Stewart Warner so there are possibilities. Though I'd be pretty sure there would be people in the U.S. who are set up for classic car instrument repairs, so it probably wouldn't be viable for a customer to post to Australia. Thanks for the thought though :o)
The proper tools would realy help these DIYers. I haven't messed with clusters yet but have changed radio bulbs and such and I feel if I can do that then the clusters should not be to bad. Just be careful and dont pry and force anything.
Man I had done my suburbans cluster a while ago but just the other day did my mom's buick steppers and I have bought a cheap desoldering iron basically it's one of those spring loaded solder sucker but with a soldering iron with a hole in the tip and it was a breeze I have mostly used it for mosfets on inverters and stuff but that was pretty easy
In my experience the leds don't don't consistently which if they are all led its not a problem but it may be a little weird with the rest being incandescent but behind the lcd it probably wont be as noticeable
@@juanmendiola1998 I wasn't sure if this one was going to be saved during the repair. So I didn't bother filming the jumper wires. Next time I'll try to cover more details.
Nice job, Big tumbs up about the effort you make on all of these mis treathed clusters! At least y have them on my bench not damaged by the owners or garages< In my country people know they are to dumb to thry it themselves, so a big plus for me! lol
@@jeffescortlx I have also used 30awg silver coated copper, kynar insulated wire for haywires on our pcbs at work. It was used extensively for wire wrap wire back in the 50s and 60s. A spool lasts a lifetime, and it silver solders real nice. No tarnish under the kynar insulation. You do have to strip it though.
@@theoldbigmoose wire wrap... It's been a while since I've heard that. My wire has been scavenged from a transformer, copper solders great too. Insulation burns off nicely. Plus it was free so that's nice!
@@jeffescortlx ey Jeff you must be super busy on all those cluster repair but i need send one to you do to i like all the work you do but i can't found the way to. Contact your so I can sent it to you thanks
If you pull up a datasheet, and go to the physical dimensions section, you'll see that the physical size is coded into their description - Metric units, of course. Thus 3030: 3.0mm x 3.0mm 5050: 5.0mm x 5.0mm
Hey @jeffescortlx what is the chemical you use to clean the flux off after soldering? I am talking about the clear liquid that you scrub around with a toothbrush.
That customer must really wanted to keep the original cluster. Great job on the repair, The LED's is a great idea. Its been awhile since I've had a cavalier in and I think that they are through hole mounted bulbs. Have you used LED's for those? Once again ,Awesome video.
Your are 100% correct, the cavalier uses one through hole lamp. With those you can tilt the display and sneak the bulb out without having to unsolder the lcd. I do have a 5mm LED's that are native 14v that work good for this. If the leads are curved bent at an angle it can be installed and leads cut after soldering, with the LCD tilted.
Great job, love the smd led idea, what package is that resistor you used? You really did a lot or work hope they payed accordingly, even then I wouldn’t give but a short warranty on that.
I can't remember the package size, I ordered a lifetime supply of them a couple years ago : ) It's like one size up from crazy small lol I was pretty reasonable with the extra labor charge. It was more of a personal challenge than it was a job.
Can you tell me part numbers of the led and 471 resistors you used here? I have my cluster apart for speedometer bulbs replacement and might do this as a preventative for the odometer incandescent bulbs.
If you want to go surface mount a standard 3528 should install nice. 470 ohm to 1k 1/8 to 1/4 watt should do fine. The lower the resistance the more current is forced through the LED.
WOW, a one hundred ten mile per hour speedometer. Had no idea Buick made "supercars." LOL Man calls out, "Dear? The gauges went out. Bring out the sledgehammer so I can do my DIY repair..."
you're a real master fixing other people's electronics f***-ups. I've so far only seen you repair Cluster units. Do you also repair other car electronics and/or general electronics ? Just wondering, I don't have a job for you :)
I'm open to repair any kind of electronics at a component level. I'm not spectacular with mobile/laptop stuff. But I've done radios, amps, industrial, appliances, HVAC whatever comes across my desk.
Hi, wondering how much you charge to fix the odometer on my 2003 Rendezvous cluster if I would send it to you? It is completely out. Everything else seems to be working fine. Thanks!
@@jeffescortlx ok thanks for the response, I took two bulbs out and now all gauges don't do anything, just seemed a little strange, I must have damaged something in the process. I think I will just swap out for a used one
@@feenal1234 you probably accidentally knocked a part off the board, or zapped it with ESD. It happens. Hopefully you can find a working one with simulator miles.
I have a question.....at 8:54 you solder a small 471 resistor, why was this needed because the surface mounts were LED? Sorry if this is a stupid question......I'm new🙂
@@jeffescortlx Also, I see that you had the speedometer powered up on the bench in front of you......can you tell me which pins are positive and negative......I also have an extra wiring harness for my speedometer, but I'm not sure which color wire I would hook up 12v power......can you tell me?
@@joemiller1208I don't have the pinout memorized on this instrument cluster, but if you Google the instrument cluster wiring diagram that will tell you.
Hey Mr Jeffescortlx. please i have a problem in my vehicle 2004 Buick Rendezvous 3.6 cxl the problem is (Security light) the RPM and temperature gauge don’t working. it was working before security light comes on and this happened directly when i tried to start the car and the battery died!! I replaced new battery but no thing.. i went to mecanique workshop he said you have to change the cluster!! I did, but nothing the Security light still on and the temperature gauge and RPM not working! Please I need your help.

What do these people do to these boards I just did mine and it was no problem i mean i had seen a couple of your videos so i knew people fucked them up but still
I don't think of the bulk of my video's as a step by step directions for beginners kind of thing. More of a "Come watch over my sholder as I mumble to my self" thing.
@@jeffescortlx I understand. I suppose, that most of the online videos are a type tutorial on this kind of subject and I assumed that yours was as well, my apologies. I was mistaken. I'm looking on step by step info on this type of repair. NO I'M NOT A NOVICE ON SOLDERING. Just a novice on cluster panel work.
Nothing works in my cluster. It says I'm going 165mph when stopped at lights. My gas is always full 😂. The lcd screen at top does not work. I am 100% sure that my cluster is the real meaning reason people say fluster cuck.
Two problems with that. First one is finding one that doesn't have as many issues as the one your trying to replace. And the second problem is finding one with the correct odometer reading.
@@edwardmyers1746 Unless you have scan tool that can reprogram with the correct odometer which most people don't have also like what Jeff said it will be more reliable and pretty much permeant repair of vehicle compared to another junk GM cluster replacement
