I love watching your cabin unfold even though this was posted a year ago. I'm watching all of your videos start to finish and am utterly impressed. Thank you to you and your wife.
My Self Reliance you need a proper set of log tools Sir. A draw knife, hewing axe, and there's a tool, I can't remember the name of it but it is as long as an ice scraper for your driveway and thick like an axe and is meant specifically for peeling logs. The weight helps keep it moving and it glides through the cambium layer. There are also several different kinds of hewing axes so make sure and do some research, some are meant to do notching and some are meant to hew a full length log into square timber........beauty work though, good on ya.
Awesome video! Video's made to watch for years to come. Making your own cart, waste not want not! You did an awesome job on the cart as well. Thanks for sharing.
So, this is the first video of a building process I was looking for. I started to watch your channel when the cabin and kitchen were already made. Thanks Shawn!)
Same here Shawn. I definitely went the wrong path in life. I work in the IT field and want to be outside all the time. Oh well there's weekends and vavcations. Lol
Just watched this one to see how you cleared the land on the first cabin. I'm following your new build. I just notice how fast you talked 4 years ago. You are so calm now, you look and sound like a totally different person and I'm really happy for you. Looks like you found peace.
I just started watching and at the age of almost 70, I guess it's a little late for me to start but I have always been fascinated with the idea of living like this. I wish there was a way to properly sequence your videos and I just watched this one and wanted to see the one of you felling 60 trees. I'll keep looking. Your cabin is amazing.
I’ve been watching your videos since lockdown in South Africa ~ March 2020 ~ and it’s been so grounding and relaxing for me and the family. We actually cleared out the workshop and did some cool projects thanks to you. Also, I watched the most recent stuff first, so seeing the early decisions, and the views around is inspiring. Thank you.
Changing the location of the cabin that you and your wife decided on without her being present is not always the best idea. Remember the old saying, "Happy wife, happy life"......lol Looks like a great spot for the cabin. Lots of work ahead of you for sure. All the best.
As I watched your video, I was thinking, this is just like when I was a kid growing up in the wilderness of Oregon. Us kids would hear the stories of the old-timers who built the log cabin homes using only the resources at hand. You will be one of those old timers some day.
as someone watching from the UK I can't help but feel alot of the survival and land crafting skills dissappeared across the pond 😉 it looks awesome. I wish we had access to the bountiful resources and freedom of which you enjoy, I can't wait to see how you get on.
Hi Shawn: Very interested in your cabin The time, care & planning you take now will pay off large dividends as you proceed. Means lots of work but gives a great deal of satisfaction. Thanks for including me Brian 76
Your a very hRd. Working. Person. My. God. Kdrp. Bless ing. And. Your. Family. Whit good health and prosperity godbless. All. You. Do. And. Keep. You and family safe
So glad I found your channel. I'm going to do almost exactly the same thing next spring. I've got awesome land. plenty of trees and rocks. No money. Plenty of tools and a fair amount of skill. Going to build a 15 x 15 cabin. All by myself and totally off grid. By the way were exactly the same age and I too feel "the time is now"!
if you need a trapper to help with the beavers, let me know!! lol Looks like it will be a great spot to have a cabin. Can't wait to see this go from dirt ground to a nice cabin!!
This build looks epic and very much looking forward to seeing this evolve, am very inspired by your depth of knowledge within this field Shawn as i'm a complete newbie only just learning ~Peace~
Same here in the United States. You aren't allowed to build a dog house without a permit. It wouldn't matter how much money or time you spent building your home, if or when they catch you they will force you to tear it down.
Black Sun Rising that depends on what state your in, and if your in rural country or in the city. Here in rural Missouri we’re pretty free to do anything we please.
Quite happy to have found your channel , I watched a few videos from Joes Channel and wondered if in fact you had a channel as well . really enjoy your personality and knowledge of how to survive while spending time in the woods . I've also happily subscribed to your channel .
Great start Shawn...Unfortunately I have to leave for Alberta this week for work so I wont get to finish my log cabin until the fall... Looking forward to following along with your build...
Looks like you have your work cut out for sure! Along with your cart for saving your back I would recommend a set of grapple tongs so you can pick up one end of a log and drag it or position it without using both hands and back which is a killer. I also picked up a wrist brace from a physio rehab supply store so I could use a flat spade to peel the logs and protect my wrist from the constant bashing. I look forward to seeing more. Good luck and watch out for that beaver he may grab your logs for his dam..
Great video, Sean! I can't wait to see the next one. Could you perhaps take a picture of the process each day you work on it so by the end you'll have a timelapse? Good luck with your all your plans for the future!
Oh oh... $1000(?) idea ... Save all the footage you can, additionally to what will be on RU-vid, then sell it on your website for like $50, or less. I'd probably buy it. Also the video was great. -JJ
Great production value Shawn, best quality yet. I must say I'm incredibly excited for this series of videos, I find the idea of building a home off grid very alluring but as a 25 year old, just starting my career, and moving into the city with my girlfriend soon, I hope to live viciously through you and learn a few things along the way.
Wow, good work Shawn. I hate to say it but be careful. One thing I've noticed from shows on cable to youtube videos is felling and handling large lumber is some dangerous business. Stay safe buddy us excited viewers don't want any setbacks. Incredible task your taking on, keep it up.
Here in the southern USA termites and moisture are a huge problem. In 5 years a log lying on the ground is gone. Things rust and dissapear pretty quickly also where the soil is acidic .
There was a woman on the news in Ontario that was homeless and with the help of others, built a one room house on private land. The province is making them year it down because they didn't get the proper permits. I hope you don't run into those same issues.
That's awesome im trying to decide on a property in timmins or thunder bay area to do the same thing. nothing is more rewarding than building it with your own two hands.
Ontario Backwoods Outfitters im in the surrounding area (tbay) and I'm building my own log cabin.. and I can't agree more 'nothing more rewarding the building it with your own hands'
