Mrs. k nice job I hope they appreciate it if you gather up the chips from cutting the cedar and put them in a small cloth bag you can hang them in the closet smells nice it keeps away the moths
Nice Job Mrs. Kapper, Joe going to loose his beach ❤️ to Goose droppings. Put a nest in pond I had dug out at a building I was in charge of building. The concrete patio, picnic tables and sidewalks for employee lunches got taken over by Geese and babies and droppings made it so covered in poop they could not use it anymore. Might have been because employees were feeding them. Was fun, but they invaded.
There she is, the Mrs. Good build for the geese. You might want to keep more. They are almost a pest here in Oklahoma. Too many stay year round, they make a mess of parks and golf courses. I and my friends would like to use a park without having to watch for goose pooh. Western red cedar is just as bad. Someone imported it into the state as a windbreak tree and they are allover too.
I raised a Canadian goose. I was helping my uncle on his property sawing trees up that had fallen into his creek. I found a washed out nest. It had rained heavily earlier in the week. There were 3 eggs so I knew they hadn't set yet because it wasn't a full clutch. So it was ok that they were cold. We finished the day out and I went home and incubated them. 1 hatched and I had her for years with wings not clipped. She finally flew away last year after a batch of eggs she had didn't hatch. They would have been half farm goose half Canadian goose but it turns out the male was sterile. I think this caused her to finally leave, animals live to reproduce and pass on their genes. So it makes sense. Was a very cool experience though
Well I hope they come back to enjoy your creation you made for them so they are safe, we have a guy that does a similar for water birds in Lake Wanaka here in New Zealand hope you have as much luck as he has.
You might just want to cut some more logs to have on the ready IF another couple of geese fall in love with your Goose island and they also want to stay and raise their family at The Kapper Wildlife Farm LTD where no goose or any other animal is ever turned away... LOL... I do love your creations. I gots to say it again God has blessed you with a special gift/talent of taking dead things and giving them new life. Kind of like God did with me some years back... Once again you've done an awesome job.... Much love and prayers.. Be blessed... BBE
Excellent work, Mrs. K! I love that you both do things to make life better for the wildlife around there. Can't wait to have a gander at the goose that wins the nest! ;)
Shucks, I wouldn't mind you making one of those exquisite goose nesting platforms for me in your spare time. Nicely done Mrs K. If you build it they will come. Enjoy!!
I made one several years ago, out of treated 2x6's and a different kind of foam board double thickness. Secured it in with a strap and foam in a can. Got a chain thick rope and cinder block. It's still floating today but has grass weeds growing up on it
Ope it dont sink we made something like that but the main fram put of thin wall pvc and thin ply wood we painted it with kills and added sand to give a none stick and they did the rest
That's a nice raft. I wonder how long it will take to get so waterlogged it sinks completely, not to be a downer just that it will happen one day. Maybe take a measurement on it, so if you want to put some fish structure in using logs you can just tie it into the bank and leave it almost long enough before you pull it out to where you want it? Just an idea.
If it lasts one season I'll be happy! We plan on an anchor and rope back to shore, so we'll keep an eye on it while it's out there and pull it on shore when they leave the nest.
Maybe stacked (encased) Styrofoam used Under will help. ? Weight looks heavy, needs Dense - something - But HEY, DUCKS & GEESE FLOAT ~ unless . . they're a Witch. ha ha =]
Part Two? Or are you waiting for the geese this spring? I'm thinking about doing the same thing but with float tubes (like you buy for the pool) and PVC. Just curious why did you abandon the Styrofoam idea?
Yes waiting for geese. The while pebble foam was bad because fish eat it. We did use pink foam though. thanks. And yes, we will be launching it soon hopefully for PART 2. thanks.
the biggest threat to the geese setting around our farm ponds is from eagles and hawks since they nest out on a tiny island away from foxes and coyotes. The geese are pretty good about setting their nests near shore brush to offer some protection from overhead predation but your floating nests would leave them open to attack. Last spring one setting goose and her mate had a nest more exposed than usual and she was taken; her mate ducked under brush and remained a widower the rest of the season. I have a love/hate relationship with the beautiful bald eagles.
yes, that sucks! It is a learning curve. We are going to place it not too far from shore, but we'll keep that in mind. But sometimes you just can't win! thanks.
I was bit or grabbed by one of those at the park. The bird is weak and soft, did not hardly feel it. I'm not scared of them anymore. They will use those wings to bully others.
Mrs Kapper I liked the idea of taking care of the geese but found the music was not of my liking. Do more videos but without the music. My hearing is not 100% and what I hear is not what someone else might hear. The sounds are not the same. Your music sounds like noise to me. Your voice is good. The sounds of nature are good. How will you keep the raft in one location?
Thank you Glenn. Music is always a difficult one. We can add it at a level, save the video and it doesn't always come out like we liked it to. We also get feedback about too much silence in some videos so it's a balancing act. We will be finalizing plans on how to anchor/attach soon. Thanks for watching and the feedback!
They will look lovely on your pond but... they are Sooo noisy and when you get a lot of them, and you will because it’s a great place to bring up a family you’re going to be stepping in a lot of bird poop not nice when your barefooted on your beach 😉
Are you in Canada or the upper reaches of the U. S.? cause if not all you are doing is reinforcing resident Goose nesting. And waterfowl biologists really frown on that. I got no issues with wood duck boxes, purple Martin houses, blue bird houses. Or even floating mallard tunnels. But Canada geese do not need to be made residential in the U. S. unless you are like in Maine or Minnesota.
We have some that visit our pond at least 2 times each day. They are no bother & I think they enjoy the occasional easy meal they can get from what we put out for the ducks & geese that we raised. We have had up to 14 use it as a rest stop overnight while migration. But I wouldn't mind if they stayed, they could help ours be alerted of predators during the night.
